MODERN SOCIETAL PROBLEMS
AND JAINISM AS A WAY OUT
s a matter of fact,
the world cannot
be better than the
individuals form-
ing it. Mere
changes in gov-
ernmental setup
or economic systems can-
not help in raising the
quality of human
life. Man is not
merely a biologi-
cal entity or a so-
cial animal.
There is a hidden
core of human
personality
that
provides
real
meaning to one’s
life. In every hu-
man, there is an
essence of the Al-
mighty which is a
source of true
awakening
and
enlightenment. Whatever
is applicable in the world-
wide context is equally ap-
plicable in the Indian con-
text too.
SOCIAL PROBLEMS
Late Acharya Mahaprag-
yaji quoted “Pratt” “Reli-
gion that ignores society
has no chance of survival”
because man and society
are interdepende
nt. There
is an intense interaction
between an individual and
his social surroundings.
Every individual is expect-
ed to be socially mature
and responsible.
Instead,
the individuals face a num-
ber of problems in their
social day-to-day affairs viz
socio-econom
ic inequali-
ties, poor status of women
in society on account of
domestic violence and sex-
ual abuses, ill-treatment of
elderly and widows in fam-
ilies, child abuse, dow-
ry, divorce, modern-
day stress, rape,
suicide, non-vege-
tarianism, alco-
holism, over-con-
sumerism, materi-
alistic ambitions,
economic recession, infla-
tion, scarcity of essentials,
poverty, cultural and reli-
gious conflicts, casteism,
population explosion, dirty
politics, unrestrained
indi-
vidualism etc.
JAINISM IS A
DISTINCT WAY OF
SOLVING THESE
PROBLEMS
As Jainism is based on hu-
manitarian values, it has
the potential to be univer-
sally appealing.
Lord
Rishabh Deva, the First
Tirathankar
(Life Con-
queror) can be found re-
ferred in the Holy Vedas.
He was an outstanding
and unique personality
who revealed the ideal of
“Ahimsa Dharma” based
on superior values of life.
In Jain philosophy,
there are 24 Tirthankars
out of which Lord Mahavi-
ra was the last one i.e. 24th
Tirthankar. He was born
527 years Before Christ
which is about 2,660 years
back. He was prince of
Vaishali in Bihar State
born to Mahara-
ja Siddharta &
Maharani Trish-
la and his birth
name was “Vard-
harnan”.
As per Lord
Mahavira - Jain-
ism is open to
people belonging
to all walks of life
irrespective
of
caste, colour,
creed, gender,
wealth etc. He
propounded that
‘Man’ himself is
the architect of
his own life and
he is guided by
his own “Kar-
ma”. No power
can save a man from the
implications
of his own
good or bad deeds. Jain phi-
losophy believes in self-re-
liance, individual cum so-
cial equality, inter-faith
tolerance, non-violence,
non-absolutism, non-pos-
session and adheres to lim-
iting one’s needs and
wants.
In short, Jain philoso-
phy can pave the way to-
wards resolution of all of
life’s problems but it re-
quires true faith and dedi-
cation on our part. If
MK Gandhi could
succeedinachiev-
ing political free-
dom through
Ahimsa, then
why not we!

A
A FEW
BASICS
MENTIONED BELOW ARE A FEW IMPORTANT BASIC
PRINCIPLES OF JAINISM FOR SOLVING SOCIETAL PROBLEMS
“Pratt” “Religion that
ignores society has no
chance of survival”
because man and society
are interdependent.
—Late Acharya
Mahapragyaji
Man himself is
the architect of his
own life and he is
guided by his own
“Karma”.
—Lord
Mahavira
AHIMSA (NON-VIOLENCE)
It focuses on equal dignity for
all living beings. “Live & Let
Live” is the primary motto.
Christopher
Key Chapple
said the Jain concept of non-
violence is an eco-friendly
concept as violence never
brings peace & happiness to
man and the society at large.
All Tirthankars had declared
thatnolivingentityshouldbe
injured, enslaved, tortured or
killed.
NON-ABSOLUTISM
(ANEKANTA DHARMA)
This second principle is
based on the idea that there
are multi-dimens
ional per-
spectives to any idea or
thought, therefore there is no
place for absolute, one-sided
views. Acharya Mahaprag-
yaji said that ‘Anekanta’ is
not just a philosophy but a
manual for an ideal life. It
imbibes a culture of toler-
ance at familial level & peace-
ful coexistence at societal
level. It resolves communal
differences at religious level
and helps in achieving uni-
versal brotherhood at nation-
al & international level. In
short, it enhances mutual
understandin
g at every level.
NON-POSSESSIVENESS
(APARIGRAHA)
As per Lord Mahavira, pos-
sessiveness is a basic rea-
son behind individual and
social violence. Unlimited
and unchecked wealth and
resources result in social
imbalance and social con-
flicts. It divides the society
in the “Haves” & “Non-
Haves” which is totally
against equitable and just
social order and results in a
financially exploitative so-
ciety.
nMost of the individual and
social problems viz looting,
murder, rape, terror, sui-
cide, mental stress are the
outcomes of lack of faith in
valuesandidealspropound-
ed in Jain philosophy
.
nNeeds and desires of man
are constantly growing like
ever-expandin
g space. The
hierarchy which begins
with necessities moves on
to comforts and lastly rests
upon luxuries which ought
to be checked and balanced
wisely and timely
.
nPeople desirous of a peace-
ful and happy life must be-
lieve in living with mini-
mumworldlyrequirements
andwithmaximummutual
adjustments. Here the poli-
cy of forgiving and forget-
ting needs to be adhered to.
nOur day-to-day behavior
should be malleable (adapt-
able). Adjustability
and
gentleness in our character
are real virtues by which
many of the social prob-
lems can be solved easily
.
nMan should learn to break
away from the shackles of
slavery to ever-growing
de-
sires. He should be like a
trustee of his own wealth
since everything is derived
from and hence eventually
belongs to the society
. This
view was propounded by
Mahatma Gandhi as well.
nThe recurrent difficulties
and challenges which we
face in our daily lives help
in bringing out our hidden
potential, one should face
themwithundauntedspirit
and zeal to achieve one’s ul-
timate purpose in life.

10 DEVELOPMENTS FROM WAR
1 Russia’s defence
ministry today said
that 1,026 Ukraine soldiers,
including 162 officers, have
laid down their arms in
Mariupol. Ukraine’s defence
ministry spokesman said he
had no information on such
a surrender.
2 Mariupol Mayor
Vadym Boichenko said
that more than 100,000
people are still stuck in the
city, awaiting evacuation. He
said earlier that some 21,000
civilian residents had been
killed during the siege.
3 Ukrainian President
Volodymyr Zelensky
said in an address to
Estonia’s parliament that
Russia was using phospho-
rous bombs in Ukraine.
4 Russian President
Vladimir Putin
reappeared after a rare
public silence to say the
invasion was a “noble” cause
and that peace talks had
reached a dead end.
5 Putin says the
country’s offensive is
proceeding “calmly” and
according to plan, with the
goal of “minimising losses”.
6 For the first time, US
President Joe Biden
accused Russian forces of
committing genocide in
Ukraine. “Yes, I called it
genocide. It’s become clearer
and clearer that Putin is just
trying to wipe out the idea of
even being able to be a
Ukrainian,” said Biden.
7 At least seven people
were killed and 22
wounded by shelling in
Ukraine’s northeastern
region of Kharkiv.
8 The mayor of the town
of Bucha, where
dozens of bodies were found
after Russia’s withdrawal
from northern Ukraine, says
more than 400 people have
been found dead so far and
25 women have reported
being raped.
9 Over 870,000
Ukrainians who fled
abroad since the war started
have returned to the country,
Ukraine’s border force says.
10 Zelensky has offered
to swap pro-Kremlin
tycoon Viktor Medvedchuk,
who has been
close to Putin for
years and who
was arrested after
escaping from
house arrest, for Ukrainians
captured by Russia.

They were taken into

Surya, later at a press
conference, said they
oppose the “appease-

ing Congress in Ra-
jasthan. “This is Ra-

harmless plas-

ring a storm in

brewing after the Central
government ordered a ban
on plastic straws given
with packages of milk and
other beverages. The ban
kicks in from July and the
Amul dairy group has said
that the move will disrupt
supplies and push up costs.
The government is of the
view that single-use plas-
tics like the mini straws
are an environmental haz-
ard as they choke up rivers.
The managing director of
Amul dairy, RS Sodhi, ap-
preciatedthegovernment’s

“plastic straws are not
even 0.1 percent of total
plastic consumption”.
The industry is finding
it difficult to replace plas-
tic straws without disrupt-
ing supplies during the
peak demand season. Re-
placing plastic straw with
those of paper will incur
additional cost on compa-
nies like Amul and other
juice manufacturers.
The concern about sin-
gle-use plastic is indeed
good-intentioned but it
continues to be used with
impunity, especially by
small vendors. The painful
decision will therefore
have to be implemented
cutting across all business-
es. Even the use of plastic

couraged.

Advocate of strong democracy, Dr Bhimrao
Ambedkar, the architect of the Constitution
Dr Ambedkar had specifically put this point in the draft constitution committee that ‘we need a government in
which the people in power understand that when obedience to the government ends and resistance starts’
ndian Constitution is federal
as well as unitary
. It is the
great feature of our Constitu-
tion that in the Preamble it-
self, its purpose, goal and es-
sence have been summed up
in a nutshell. The preamble
of the Constitution ‘We the
people of India’ not only con-
tains the dignity of the demo-
cratic system of governance
but also declares that the con-
stitution derives its power
directly from the people. Dr
Bhimrao Ambedkar was the
mainarchitectandbuilderof
this constitution adorned
with the sentiments of equal-
ity
, sovereignty
, fraternity
. As
the Chairman of the Consti-
tution Drafting Committee,
he not only included impor-
tant subjects in the Constitu-
tion from the Indian perspec-
tive but also ensured all those
provisions related to the em-
powerment of democracy,
which strengthen the politi-
cal structure of the country
.
After the independence of
the country
, while adopting
theparliamentarydemocracy
system, fundamental rights
wereprovidedtothecommon
citizens in the constitution
and their fundamental duties
have also been ensured. I con-
sider Dr Ambedkar rare in
the sense that he strongly ad-
vocated the implementation
of social and economic codes
of conduct in the Constitu-
tion keeping in view the con-
texts of the times. Ambedkar
said that democracy can be
protected only by providing
economicandsocialfreedom.
He specifically put this point
in the draft constitution com-
mitteethat‘weneedagovern-
ment in which the people in
power understand that when
the obedience to the govern-
ment ends and resistance
starts’. The government
should be of the people, for
thepeopleandshouldbeelect-
ed by the people.
Dr Ambedkar always em-
phasized on strengthening
the federal system in the con-
stitution. The big reason be-
hind this was that he was in
favour of making India’s fed-
eral system the most power-
ful. Under the strength of
parliamentary democracy
, he
intended that in ordinary cir-
cumstances, the state is free
from the control of the cen-
tral government, but under
the constitution, it should
become a powerful center of
the country
. It was also neces-
sary in the circumstances of
that time because when the
constitution was being made,
there was turmoil in the
country
.Naturally
,duringthe
makingof theconstitution,it
was kept in mind that if the
center becomes weak, then
the country’s Independence
can also be in danger again.
One major highlight of Dr
Ambedkar’s constitutional
contemplation is that he laid
moreemphasisonthenatural
principles of human rights
duringthemakingof thecon-
stitution. Perhaps he knew
that forcing any right by any
law is not good for democracy
.
That is why he placed moral
consciousness in the rights.
Hebelievedthatif alawisim-
plemented by bringing it
within the ambit of social
consciousness,thentherights
will be protected for a long
time, otherwise they can be
opposed by the community at
anytime.ThatiswhyAmbed-
kar also gave importance to
giving equal rights to women
asmenandtoincludethemin
the mainstream. Under Arti-
cle 14 of the Constitution, it
has been made clear that no
citizen can be discriminated
against on the basis of sex.
Ambedkar’s role as the
head of the Constitution
Drafting Committee is also
not less important in that he
not only decided the role of
important provisions related
to the constitution, but also
included in it the important
subjects that strengthen the
republic in the Indian per-
spective. When I was a mem-
ber of the Lok Sabha, I had
the opportunity to study the
proceedings of the Constitu-
ent Assembly in detail and
during that time, I read the
ten-volume ‘Government Re-
portontheDebateof theCon-
stituent Assembly of India’
with great interest. While
reading this, I also came
across the personality of Dr.
Ambedkar, in which he has
given credit to his colleagues
despite the great work of
writing the Constitution.
The debate that took place
in the Constituent Assembly
from November 17 to Novem-
ber 25, 1949, was answered by
Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar. In
this he openly expressed his
opinion on the criticisms of
the constitution. While doing
so, he also specifically told
thattheConstitutioncontains
the ideas of the present gen-
eration. Along with the flexi-
ble process of the Constitu-
tion, he also established that
we should not be satisfied
with political democracy
andshouldalsogivetheform
of social democracy to our
political democracy
. Social
democracy means the princi-
ple of liberty
, equality and
fraternity
. The special
thing that has been done
by Dr. Ambedkar in the
context of the Constitu-
tion is that he has also
called for adopting a
resolution to preserve
the Constitution, so that
there is a continuous ef-
fort to remove the evils
and weakness should
not be seen in the under-
taking to remove evils.
I agree that the special
contribution of Dr.
AmbedkartotheIndianCon-
stitution has not been dis-
cussed much. In the pream-
ble of the Constitution pro-
posed by the first Prime
Minister of the
country
, Pt. Jawaha-
rlal Nehru, the con-
cept of ‘fraternity’ is due to
Dr. Ambedkar. His broad con-
stitutional vision can be
deeply understood in his last
speech to the Constituent As-
semblyinwhichhehadcalled
‘fraternity’ necessary for the
unity and integrity of the
country
. Dr. Ambedkar was
such an architect and builder
of the Indian Constitution,
who, by connecting the coun-
try with the feelings of
nationalism, laid the
constitutional foun-
dation for strength-
ening democracy

WB:Political slandering eruptsas
BJPdecides to send probe team
Kolkata (Agencies):
Fresh rounds of politi-
cal mud-slinging has
erupted after the BJP’s
central leadership in
New Delhi decided to
send its five-member
factfindingteamtoWest
Bengal to conduct an in-
dependent probe into
the rape of a minor girl,
who died later, at Han-
skhali in Nadia district.
The five-member
probe team will visit the
crime spot, prepare a
detailed report and sub-
mit the same to Union
Home Minister Amit
Shah and part’s nation-
al president JP Nadda.
Soon after the BJP’s
decision, Trinamool
Congress national gen-
eral secretary and the
party spokesman Kunal
Ghosh gave a strongly-
wordedstatementwhere
he questioned the mo-
tive behind sending the
fact-finding team when
CentralBureauof Inves-
tigation (CBI) is all set to
take up the probe in the
case following an order
of the division bench of
theCalcuttaHighCourt.
“There can be multi-
ple reasons behind the
decision to send the par-
ty’s own fact-finding
team to the state at this
juncture.Thereis a high
possibility that the head
of team is coming to in-
fluence the CBI probe in
the matter so that the
central probe agency
frames charges as per
convenience of the BJP
leadership and not as
per findings based on
evidence. The intention
of sending the fact-find-
ingteamissheerpolitics
over the tragic end of a
girl, which has already
been condemned by all
of us,” Ghosh said.
He also asked as to
why the saffron leader-
ship did not form and
send similar- finding
team when similar mi-
nor rapes happened in
BJP-ruledstateslikethat
in Unnao and Hathras.
However, his allega-
tions were rubbished by
BJPlegislatorfromWest
Bengal, Srirupa Mitra
Chowdhury, who is one
of the five members of
the fact-finding team.
Accordingtoher,whena
lady chief minister of a
state terms the minor
rape as a minor incident
and tries to give a love-
angle twist to the issue,
it is clear that no woman
in the state is safe. “We
want the Centre to take
immediate steps to en-
sure the safety and secu-
rity of the women in the
state,” she said.
The other four mem-
bers of the team are —

CBI PROBE MUST
BE COMPLETED
IN EXPEDITIOUS
MANNER: TMC
Kolkata: The ruling
TMC on Wednesday
said that the CBI probe
must be completed in an
“expeditious manner”,
describing the incident
as a “ghastly crime that
shook the conscience of
Bengal”. “We wish the
probe gets completed
at the earliest and the
chargesheet submitted
against the accused in
the court in a time-bound
manner. The guilty can-
not evade punishment
for this heinous crime.
There is a high possibility that the
head of team is coming to influence the
CBI probe in the matter so that the cen-
tral probe agency frames charges as per conven-
ience of the BJP leadership and not as per find-
ings based on evidence.

not approve the draft
of the National Educa-

Jaipur: The Petroleum
Department, which has
achieved 100 percent
target in petroleum
revenue, has played an
important role this
time by contributing
about Rs 4,000 crore to
the government ex-

hard work of Petrole-
um Minister Pramod
Jain Bhaya and ACS
Dr Subodh Agrawal on
the revenue front, the
department has set a
new record in revenue
earning. On March 31,
in the last financial
year, the Petroleum De-
partment achieved the
target of cent percent
revenue by earning
more than Rs 3,995
crore. This amount is
more than Rs 2,090
crore as compared to
the last financial year
when the department
got only Rs 1,904 crore
revenue. “It was a big
challenge to increase

mand in the market,
but by planning, we
also maintained the de-

duction get affected,”
said Pramod Jain
Bhaya. Now in the fi-
nancial year starting
from April 1, the de-
partment is to move
towards target of Rs
5,000 crore. For this, the
department has pre-

Jaipur: With violence
hitting several states of
the nation on Ram Na-
vami, Chief Minister
Ashok Gehlot has yet
again targeted the BJP
government over the is-
sue stressing that the
violence has erupted in
states with BJP govern-
ments.
Gehlot said, “Ram
Navami riots have
erupted in the states
where there are BJP
governments, whereas
in all
the districts of Ra-
jasthan, the procession
of Ram Navami took
out in a peaceful man-
ner. In Rajasthan, all
communities celebrat-
ed the festival of Ram
Navami together and
Ram Navami proces-
sions were welcomed by
people of all religions,
classes including Hin-
dus, Muslims, Sikhs.”
The Chief Minister
saidinhisstatementthat
the BJP is troubled by
the unity and cordial at-
mosphere of the people
of Rajasthan. They are
regretting that how
the festival of Ram
Navami was cele-
brated peaceful-
ly in the state,
he said.
“BJP leaders are con-
stantly trying to create
a communal atmos-
phere in the state. That
is why sometimes they
go to Karauli and do il-
legal things, sometimes
they submit a memo-
randum to the Gover-
nor, so that tension re-
mains in the air. But the
state government has
instructed the adminis-
tration to remain vigi-
lant, so that no unto-
ward incident can hap-
pen,” he said.
CM Gehlot warned
that if any person tries
to disturb the peace sys-
tem of Rajasthan, then
strict action will be
taken against him, irre-
spective of the party or
class he belongs to.
Rajendra Chhabra
Jaipur: Rajasthan’s bu-
reaucracy is surprised
and in a state of disar-
ray after senior leader
of BJP recently threat-
ened the bureaucracy of
being too loyal to the
current regime and
warned the officials of
facing the consequences
of the same. Although
Union Min Gajendra S
Shekhawat had sur-
prised everyone by
stressing that 4 IAS and
4 IPS will definitely be
punished and though at
that time this statement
was not taken much se-
riously, however, now
former CM Vasundhara
Raje has given a clear
warning to bureaucrats
that the ‘time does not
remainsamealways,the
officers that are not car-
rying out their constitu-
tional responsibilities
will have to face conse-
quences’. This state-
ment has now instilled
fear in the bureaucracy
.
Raje’swarningisalsoef-
fective since her image
has been of a moderate
and liberal leader. Ac-
cording to political ob-
servers, Raje must have
been under pressure to
giveaclearmessagethat
sheiscompletelyaligned
with the party line and
doesnt have any soft cor-
ner with Rajasthan CM
or his bureaucracy,
which is bein targeted
by another BJP CM con-
tender Shekhawat.
If the tradition of
changing governments,
a phenomenon of the
past fifteen years, is re-
peated in 2023, then BJP
can come to power in
the state and in that
situation the ‘loyal’ bu-
reaucrats may face ‘dif-
ficulties’. Therefore, the
officers who are giving
most results, they can
be ‘slowed down’, which
would not be good for
the working of the state
government and vari-
ous pro-people schemes.
An important aspect
is that when in 2018 Ge-
hlot was in the opposi-
tion and was preparing
to form govt, he too had
then scolded the bureau-
crats and stressed that
heevenhadalistof offic-
ers loyal to the BJP
. In
fact, in his earlier term,
Gehlot had even formed
Mathur Commission
against loyal officers.
Itisanestablishedfact
that CM’s trusted offic-
ers, like Principal Secre-
tary to CM, Finance Sec-
retaryHomeSecretary
,
have always been given a
‘cold posting’ once the
govt changes. Raje had
even put Gehlot’s former
CS CK Mathew to a cold
posting which means
that it is a ‘loosing battle’
for bureaucrats to be a
favourite of CM.
It is also true that sev-
eral officials keep the
rules and regulations at
bay to keep CM and min-
isters happy but target-
ing the entire bureau-
cracy over it is not right.
The current govt still
has 20 months left with
itself and the kind of
threats that are being
given to bureaucrats, it
hassurelybroughtdown
the morale. It is believed
that officials may actu-
ally let go of the work
which will ultimately
hurt the people.
It is therefore impor-
tant to put an end to this
vendetta phenomenon
and for this the future
CMs will have to take a
step by showing large
hearted approach. Just
like it is extremely hard
to ride a horrified
horse, similarly it is im-
possible to run the state
with a troubled and de-
moralised bureaucracy
.

“When 16 projects going on in other states can be declared
national projects, it is beyond everyone’s understanding
why the ERCP is not being declared a national project. Why
is the central government discriminating against Ra-

wat was rubbing salt on the wounds of the people by saying
that the PM did not utter a word about the ERCP. Mean-
while, Dotasra said that 40 per cent of the state’s popula-
tion is waiting for fresh water, but the Union Jal Shakti

  • 1. 10 ETC JAIPUR | THURSDAY, APRIL 14, 2022 www.firstindia.co.in I https://firstindia.co.in /epapers/jaipur I twitter.com/thefirstind ia I facebook.com/thefirst india I instagram.com/thefirs tindia MODERN SOCIETAL PROBLEMS AND JAINISM AS A WAY OUT s a matter of fact, the world cannot be better than the individuals form- ing it. Mere changes in gov- ernmental setup or economic systems can- not help in raising the quality of human life. Man is not merely a biologi- cal entity or a so- cial animal. There is a hidden core of human personality that provides real meaning to one’s life. In every hu- man, there is an essence of the Al- mighty which is a source of true awakening and enlightenment. Whatever is applicable in the world- wide context is equally ap- plicable in the Indian con- text too. SOCIAL PROBLEMS Late Acharya Mahaprag- yaji quoted “Pratt” “Reli- gion that ignores society has no chance of survival” because man and society are interdepende nt. There is an intense interaction between an individual and his social surroundings. Every individual is expect- ed to be socially mature and responsible. Instead, the individuals face a num- ber of problems in their social day-to-day affairs viz socio-econom ic inequali- ties, poor status of women in society on account of domestic violence and sex- ual abuses, ill-treatment of elderly and widows in fam- ilies, child abuse, dow- ry, divorce, modern- day stress, rape, suicide, non-vege- tarianism, alco- holism, over-con- sumerism, materi- alistic ambitions, economic recession, infla- tion, scarcity of essentials, poverty, cultural and reli- gious conflicts, casteism, population explosion, dirty politics, unrestrained indi- vidualism etc. JAINISM IS A DISTINCT WAY OF SOLVING THESE PROBLEMS As Jainism is based on hu- manitarian values, it has the potential to be univer- sally appealing. Lord Rishabh Deva, the First Tirathankar (Life Con- queror) can be found re- ferred in the Holy Vedas. He was an outstanding and unique personality who revealed the ideal of “Ahimsa Dharma” based on superior values of life. In Jain philosophy, there are 24 Tirthankars out of which Lord Mahavi- ra was the last one i.e. 24th Tirthankar. He was born 527 years Before Christ which is about 2,660 years back. He was prince of Vaishali in Bihar State born to Mahara- ja Siddharta & Maharani Trish- la and his birth name was “Vard- harnan”. As per Lord Mahavira - Jain- ism is open to people belonging to all walks of life irrespective of caste, colour, creed, gender, wealth etc. He propounded that ‘Man’ himself is the architect of his own life and he is guided by his own “Kar- ma”. No power can save a man from the implications of his own good or bad deeds. Jain phi- losophy believes in self-re- liance, individual cum so- cial equality, inter-faith tolerance, non-violence, non-absolutism, non-pos- session and adheres to lim- iting one’s needs and wants. In short, Jain philoso- phy can pave the way to- wards resolution of all of life’s problems but it re- quires true faith and dedi- cation on our part. If MK Gandhi could succeedinachiev- ing political free- dom through Ahimsa, then why not we! DR IM KHICHA M.Com, Ph.D Founder Member and Ex Director -Shree Vardhman Girls College, Beawar A A FEW BASICS MENTIONED BELOW ARE A FEW IMPORTANT BASIC PRINCIPLES OF JAINISM FOR SOLVING SOCIETAL PROBLEMS “Pratt” “Religion that ignores society has no chance of survival” because man and society are interdependent. —Late Acharya Mahapragyaji Man himself is the architect of his own life and he is guided by his own “Karma”. —Lord Mahavira AHIMSA (NON-VIOLENCE) It focuses on equal dignity for all living beings. “Live & Let Live” is the primary motto. Christopher Key Chapple said the Jain concept of non- violence is an eco-friendly concept as violence never brings peace & happiness to man and the society at large. All Tirthankars had declared thatnolivingentityshouldbe injured, enslaved, tortured or killed. NON-ABSOLUTISM (ANEKANTA DHARMA) This second principle is based on the idea that there are multi-dimens ional per- spectives to any idea or thought, therefore there is no place for absolute, one-sided views. Acharya Mahaprag- yaji said that ‘Anekanta’ is not just a philosophy but a manual for an ideal life. It imbibes a culture of toler- ance at familial level & peace- ful coexistence at societal level. It resolves communal differences at religious level and helps in achieving uni- versal brotherhood at nation- al & international level. In short, it enhances mutual understandin g at every level. NON-POSSESSIVENESS (APARIGRAHA) As per Lord Mahavira, pos- sessiveness is a basic rea- son behind individual and social violence. Unlimited and unchecked wealth and resources result in social imbalance and social con- flicts. It divides the society in the “Haves” & “Non- Haves” which is totally against equitable and just social order and results in a financially exploitative so- ciety. nMost of the individual and social problems viz looting, murder, rape, terror, sui- cide, mental stress are the outcomes of lack of faith in valuesandidealspropound- ed in Jain philosophy . nNeeds and desires of man are constantly growing like ever-expandin g space. The storm began brewing after the Central government ordered a ban on plastic straws given with packages of milk and other beverages. The ban kicks in from July and the Amul dairy group has said that the move will disrupt supplies and push up costs. The government is of the view that single-use plas- tics like the mini straws are an environmental haz- ard as they choke up rivers. The managing director of Amul dairy, RS Sodhi, ap- preciatedthegovernment’s intention but said that “plastic straws are not even 0.1 percent of total plastic consumption”. The industry is finding it difficult to replace plas- tic straws without disrupt- ing supplies during the peak demand season. Re- placing plastic straw with those of paper will incur additional cost on compa- nies like Amul and other juice manufacturers. The concern about sin- gle-use plastic is indeed good-intentioned but it continues to be used with impunity, especially by small vendors. The painful decision will therefore have to be implemented cutting across all business- es. Even the use of plastic bottles will have to be dis- couraged. Butstrongstepsareneed- edagainsttheuseof plastic. Researchers at a medical schoolintheUKhavefound “tinypiecesof plasticinthe lungs of living humans”. In India, plastic has been found in fish in Mumbai and Chennai. Pondicherry and Cochin universities saidinastudythatChennai residents may be inhaling microplastic found in dust in 16 localities of the city . Isn’t human health more important than a straw? STORM BREWING IN JUICE, MILK PACKS The government is of the view that single-use plastics like the mini straws are an environmental hazard as they choke up rivers. Narendra Modi @narendramodi I’ve spoken about UPI and Digital Payments quite often but I really liked how you’ve used the sound of money transacted through data sonification to effectively convey the point. Very interesting, impressive and obviously informative! TOP TWEETS SPIRITUAL SPEAK When meditation is mastered, the mind is unwavering like the flame of a lamp in a windless place. —Bhagavad Gita Advocate of strong democracy, Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar, the architect of the Constitution Dr Ambedkar had specifically put this point in the draft constitution committee that ‘we need a government in which the people in power understand that when obedience to the government ends and resistance starts’ ndian Constitution is federal as well as unitary . It is the great feature of our Constitu- tion that in the Preamble it- self, its purpose, goal and es- sence have been summed up in a nutshell. The preamble of the Constitution ‘We the people of India’ not only con- tains the dignity of the demo- cratic system of governance but also declares that the con- stitution derives its power directly from the people. Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar was the mainarchitectandbuilderof this constitution adorned with the sentiments of equal- ity , sovereignty , fraternity . As the Chairman of the Consti- tution Drafting Committee, he not only included impor- tant subjects in the Constitu- tion from the Indian perspec- tive but also ensured all those provisions related to the em- powerment of democracy, which strengthen the politi- cal structure of the country . After the independence of the country , while adopting theparliamentarydemocracy system, fundamental rights wereprovidedtothecommon citizens in the constitution and their fundamental duties have also been ensured. I con- sider Dr Ambedkar rare in the sense that he strongly ad- vocated the implementation of social and economic codes of conduct in the Constitu- tion keeping in view the con- texts of the times. Ambedkar said that democracy can be protected only by providing economicandsocialfreedom. He specifically put this point in the draft constitution com- mitteethat‘weneedagovern- ment in which the people in power understand that when the obedience to the govern- ment ends and resistance starts’. The government should be of the people, for thepeopleandshouldbeelect- ed by the people. Dr Ambedkar always em- phasized on strengthening the federal system in the con- stitution. The big reason be- hind this was that he was in favour of making India’s fed- eral system the most power- ful. Under the strength of parliamentary democracy , he intended that in ordinary cir- cumstances, the state is free from the control of the cen- tral government, but under the constitution, it should become a powerful center of the country . It was also neces- sary in the circumstances of that time because when the constitution was being made, there was turmoil in the country .Naturally ,duringthe makingof theconstitution,it was kept in mind that if the center becomes weak, then the country’s Independence can also be in danger again. One major highlight of Dr Ambedkar’s constitutional contemplation is that he laid moreemphasisonthenatural principles of human rights duringthemakingof thecon- stitution. Perhaps he knew that forcing any right by any law is not good for democracy . That is why he placed moral consciousness in the rights. Hebelievedthatif alawisim- plemented by bringing it within the ambit of social consciousness, thentherights will be protected for a long time, otherwise they can be opposed by the community at anytime.ThatiswhyAmbed- kar also gave importance to giving equal rights to women asmenandtoincludethemin the mainstream. Under Arti- cle 14 of the Constitution, it has been made clear that no citizen can be discriminated against on the basis of sex. Ambedkar’s role as the head of the Constitution Drafting Committee is also not less important in that he not only decided the role of important provisions related to the constitution, but also included in it the important subjects that strengthen the republic in the Indian per- spective. When I was a mem- ber of the Lok Sabha, I had the opportunity to study the proceedings of the Constitu- ent Assembly in detail and during that time, I read the ten-volume ‘Government Re- portontheDebateof theCon- stituent Assembly of India’ with great interest. While reading this, I also came across the personality of Dr. Ambedkar, in which he has given credit to his colleagues despite the great work of writing the Constitution. The debate that took place in the Constituent Assembly from November 17 to Novem- ber 25, 1949, was answered by Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar. In this he openly expressed his opinion on the criticisms of the constitution. While doing so, he also specifically told thattheConstitutioncontains the ideas of the present gen- eration. Along with the flexi- ble process of the Constitu- tion, he also established that we should not be satisfied with political democracy andshouldalsogivetheform of social democracy to our political democracy . Social democracy means the princi- ple of liberty , equality and fraternity . The special thing that has been done by Dr. Ambedkar in the context of the Constitu- tion is that he has also called for adopting a resolution to preserve the Constitution, so that there is a continuous ef- fort to remove the evils and weakness should not be seen in the under- taking to remove evils. I agree that the special contribution of Dr. AmbedkartotheIndianCon- stitution has not been dis- cussed much. In the pream- ble of the Constitution pro- posed by the first Prime Minister of the country , Pt. Jawaha- rlal Nehru, the con- cept of ‘fraternity’ is due to Dr. Ambedkar. His broad con- stitutional vision can be deeply understood in his last speech to the Constituent As- semblyinwhichhehadcalled ‘fraternity’ necessary for the unity and integrity of the country . Dr. Ambedkar was such an architect and builder of the Indian Constitution, who, by connecting the coun- try with the feelings of nationalism, laid the constitutional foun- dation for strength- ening democracy . WB:Political slandering eruptsas BJPdecides to send probe team Kolkata (Agencies): Fresh rounds of politi- cal mud-slinging has erupted after the BJP’s central leadership in New Delhi decided to send its five-member factfindingteamtoWest Bengal to conduct an in- dependent probe into the rape of a minor girl, who died later, at Han- skhali in Nadia district. The five-member probe team will visit the crime spot, prepare a detailed report and sub- mit the same to Union Home Minister Amit Shah and part’s nation- al president JP Nadda. Soon after the BJP’s decision, Trinamool Congress national gen- eral secretary and the party spokesman Kunal Ghosh gave a strongly- wordedstatementwhere he questioned the mo- tive behind sending the fact-finding team when CentralBureauof Inves- tigation (CBI) is all set to take up the probe in the case following an order of the division bench of theCalcuttaHighCourt. “There can be multi- ple reasons behind the decision to send the par- ty’s own fact-finding team to the state at this juncture.Thereis a high possibility that the head of team is coming to in- fluence the CBI probe in the matter so that the central probe agency frames charges as per convenience of the BJP leadership and not as per findings based on evidence. The intention of sending the fact-find- ingteamissheerpolitics over the tragic end of a girl, which has already been condemned by all of us,” Ghosh said. He also asked as to why the saffron leader- ship did not form and send similar- finding team when similar mi- nor rapes happened in BJP-ruledstateslikethat in Unnao and Hathras. However, his allega- tions were rubbished by BJPlegislatorfromWest Bengal, Srirupa Mitra Chowdhury, who is one of the five members of the fact-finding team. Accordingtoher, whena lady chief minister of a state terms the minor rape as a minor incident and tries to give a love- angle twist to the issue, it is clear that no woman in the state is safe. “We want the Centre to take immediate steps to en- sure the safety and secu- rity of the women in the state,” she said. CBI PROBE MUST BE COMPLETED IN EXPEDITIOUS MANNER: TMC Kolkata: The ruling TMC on Wednesday said that the CBI probe must be completed in an “expeditious manner”, describing the incident as a “ghastly crime that shook the conscience of Bengal”. “We wish the probe gets completed at the earliest and the chargesheet submitted against the accused in the court in a time-bound manner. The guilty can- not evade punishment for this heinous crime. There is a high possibility that the head of team is coming to influence the CBI probe in the matter so that the cen- tral probe agency frames charges as per conven- ience of the BJP leadership and not as per find- ings based on evidence. —Kunal Ghosh, TMC national general secretary RAPE CASE HANSKHALI INDIA JAIPUR | THURSDAY, APRIL 14, 2022 05 www.firstindia.co.in I https://firstindia.co.in/epapers/jaipur I twitter.com/thefirstindia I facebook.com/thefirstindia I instagram.com/thefirstindia ED ARRESTS PFI MEMBER FROM KERALA IN PMLA New Delhi (ANI): The Enforcement Directorate has arrested MK Ashraf, a Popular Front of India (PFI) leader from Kerala, under the PMLA. Shah’s push for Hindi: TN BJP president says ‘won’t let that happen’ Chennai (Agencies): Tamil Nadu BJP leader K Annamalai on Wednesday said that the state unit of the party will not allow imposi- tion of Hindi in Tamil Nadu. The statement comes a few days after Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remark on learning Hindi evoked widespread reactions across the country . None of us here, including me, speaks Hindi. There is no situ- ation here as such that we have to learn a lan- guage to prove that we are Indians.” Annamalai claimed that the Congress po- liticised the Hindi lan- guage issue for over 40 years but Prime Minis- ter Narendra Modi did not approve the draft of the National Educa- tion Policy that had Hindi as the main lan- guage. “He (Modi) gave the clearance only af- ter the cabinet exam- ined the final report that made Hindi an op- tional language.” Reacting to Oscar- winning musician AR Rahman’s remark that Tamil should be the link language, the for- mer IPS officer said: “If Tamil becomes the link language of India, it will be a great pride for all of us, but have we made efforts to make the Tamil language achieve that space?” K Annamalai SC agrees to hear Nawab Malik’s plea New Delhi (ANI): The Supreme Court on Wednesdayagreedtolist for hearing a plea of Ma- harashtra Minister and NCP leader Nawab Ma- likfiledagainstanorder of the Bombay High Court which had reject- ed his interim applica- tion seeking immediate release in a case of mon- ey laundering being in- vestigated by the En- forcement Directorate. Due to the hard work of Petrole- um Minister Pramod Jain Bhaya and ACS Dr Subodh Agrawal on the revenue front, the department has set a new record in revenue earning. On March 31, in the last financial year, the Petroleum De- partment achieved the target of cent percent revenue by earning more than Rs 3,995 crore. This amount is more than Rs 2,090 crore as compared to the last financial year when the department got only Rs 1,904 crore revenue. “It was a big challenge to increase theproductionof crude oil in Barmer basin and to maintain its de- mand in the market, but by planning, we also maintained the de- mand in the market and did not let the pro- duction get affected,” said Pramod Jain Bhaya. • 9. First India Bureau Jaipur: With violence hitting several states of the nation on Ram Na- vami, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has yet again targeted the BJP government over the is- sue stressing that the violence has erupted in states with BJP govern- ments. Gehlot said, “Ram Navami riots have erupted in the states where there are BJP governments, whereas in all the districts of Ra- jasthan, the procession of Ram Navami took out in a peaceful man- ner. In Rajasthan, all communities celebrat- ed the festival of Ram Navami together and Ram Navami proces- sions were welcomed by people of all religions, classes including Hin- dus, Muslims, Sikhs.” The Chief Minister saidinhisstatementthat the BJP is troubled by the unity and cordial at- mosphere of the people of Rajasthan. They are regretting that how the festival of Ram Navami was cele- brated peaceful- ly in the state, he said. “BJP leaders are con- stantly trying to create a communal atmos- phere in the state. That is why sometimes they go to Karauli and do il- legal things, sometimes they submit a memo- randum to the Gover- nor, so that tension re- mains in the air. But the state government has instructed the adminis- tration to remain vigi- lant, so that no unto- ward incident can hap- pen,” he said. CM Gehlot warned that if any person tries to disturb the peace sys- tem of Rajasthan, then strict action will be taken against him, irre- spective of the party or class he belongs to. Rajendra Chhabra Jaipur: Rajasthan’s bu- reaucracy is surprised and in a state of disar- ray after senior leader of BJP recently threat- ened the bureaucracy of being too loyal to the current regime and warned the officials of facing the consequences of the same. Although Union Min Gajendra S Shekhawat had sur- prised everyone by stressing that 4 IAS and 4 IPS will definitely be punished and though at that time this statement was not taken much se- riously, however, now former CM Vasundhara Raje has given a clear warning to bureaucrats that the ‘time does not remainsamealways, the officers that are not car- rying out their constitu- tional responsibilities will have to face conse- quences’. This state- ment has now instilled fear in the bureaucracy . Raje’swarningisalsoef- fective since her image has been of a moderate and liberal leader. Ac- cording to political ob- servers, Raje must have been under pressure to giveaclearmessagethat sheiscompletelyaligned with the party line and doesnt have any soft cor- ner with Rajasthan CM or his bureaucracy, which is bein targeted by another BJP CM con- tender Shekhawat. If the tradition of changing governments, a phenomenon of the past fifteen years, is re- peated in 2023, then BJP can come to power in the state and in that situation the ‘loyal’ bu- reaucrats may face ‘dif- ficulties’. Therefore, the officers who are giving most results, they can be ‘slowed down’, which would not be good for the working of the state government and vari- ous pro-people schemes. An important aspect is that when in 2018 Ge- hlot was in the opposi- tion and was preparing to form govt, he too had then scolded the bureau- crats and stressed that heevenhadalistof offic- ers loyal to the BJP . In fact, in his earlier term, Gehlot had even formed Mathur Commission against loyal officers. Itisanestablishedfact that CM’s trusted offic- ers, like Principal Secre- tary to CM, Finance Sec- retaryHomeSecretary , have always been given a ‘cold posting’ once the govt changes. Raje had even put Gehlot’s former CS CK Mathew to a cold posting which means that it is a ‘loosing battle’ for bureaucrats to be a favourite of CM. It is also true that sev- eral officials keep the rules and regulations at bay to keep CM and min- isters happy but target- ing the entire bureau- cracy over it is not right. The current govt still has 20 months left with itself and the kind of threats that are being given to bureaucrats, it hassurelybroughtdown the morale. It is believed that officials may actu- ally let go of the work which will ultimately hurt the people. It is therefore impor- tant to put an end to this vendetta phenomenon and for this the future CMs will have to take a step by showing large hearted approach. Just like it is extremely hard to ride a horrified horse, similarly it is im- possible to run the state with a troubled and de- moralised bureaucracy .
