MODI PROMOTED POLITICS OF DEVELOPMENT: NADDA
First India Bureau
Lucknow: BJP presi-
dent J P Nadda on

ka Saaath, Sabka vi-
kas’,” the BJP president

how vaccines like that
against polio and en-
cephalitis “took dec-
ades to come to India”

himself took the vac-
cine but advised the
public not to take it.”

Lucknow: Turmeric
has a long history of it’s
use in Asian, African
and Caribbean cuisines
and in no time this In-
dian spice will be de-
clared as One District
One Product (ODOP) of
Kushinagar and popu-
larised among farmers.
With Turmeric be-
coming the ODOP of
Kushinagar, the Bud-
dhist pilgrimage site
has the potential to be-
come like the Erode,
Sangli and Nizamabad
districts of South In-
dia, known for it’s high
volume cultivation.
The traditional way
of cultivation of tur-
meric in Kushinagar
has a long history. It is
mainly cultivated in
Dudahi, Ramkola, Bis-
hunpura, Khadda,
Severhi, Kaptanganj,
Kathkuiyan, and Fazil-
nagar.
Working towards the
interest of farmers is
the foremost priority of
the Yogi Adityanath
government.
In this regard, the
government will ex-
plore the possibilities
of cultivation of tur-
meric in Kushinagar at
its level.
In 2014, the Sustain-
able Human Develop-
ment Association
(SHDA), an organisa-
tion working among
farmers in collabora-
tion with Tata Trusts,
started a planned effort
to cultivate it.
The yield of local and
developed species in the
trial ranges from 150 to
400 quintals, respective-
ly. At present, about
10,000 farmers of the
district are associated
with the cultivation of
turmeric.
According to Agri-
cultural officer BM Tri-
pathi, in the Agro cli-
mate zone of Kushina-
gar, Rajendra Sonia,
Rajendra Sonali, Nar-
endra Haldi-1 are the
highest yielding spe-
cies if the farmers are
trained on a large scale
about the improved
methods of farming.
If quality seeds of
better species are pro-
vided and cooperation
in processing, packing
and marketing of the
produce is given, then
turmeric can change
the fortunes of the
farmers of Kushina-
gar, once infamous for
poverty, hunger and
malnutrition.

IN-DEPTH
PROTESTS AFTER
FRIDAY PRAYERS
MANIFEST ANGER AT
SHARMA, JINDAL
uslims in several cit-
ies took the police by
surprise when they
staged huge unan-
nounced protests af-
ter Friday prayers against BJP
spokespersons Nupur Sharma
and Naveen Jindal’s remarks
against Prophet Muhammad
and the government’s perceived
inaction. The protests were held
in Delhi, Moradabad, Saharan-
pur, Prayagraj, Hyderabad, Kol-
kata and Srinagar. Barring
Prayagraj, the protests were
peaceful. Who gave the call for
these protests is not known.
While an FIR has been regis-
tered against Nupur Sharma
and Naveen Jindal, the Muslims
are demanding their arrest.
These demonstrations follow
protests by almost every Muslim
country which forced an embar-
rassed Indian government to
describe Sharma and Jindal as
“fringe” elements.
These protests may die down
but they signal a change in the
Muslim response. The usual
Muslim bashing in TV debates
and at dharma sansad’s was still
tolerable, but the right wing
leaders crossed the threshold
when they made objectionable
remarks against the Prophet.
They could have done without it.
TOP TWEETS
M
ection 66A of the
Information Tech-
nology Act holds a
special appeal for
the Government
of India. Grossly misused by
law enforcement agencies to
clamp down on right to ex-
pression in the country, the
controversial section was
struck down by the Supreme
Court in 2015 as “unconstitu-
tional” for being in violation
of Article 19 (1)(a). This Arti-
cle gives people the right to
free speech and expression.
Despite the Supreme Court
scrapping the section it con-
tinued to be used by security
agencies of various states.
This invited the wrath of the
top court which called it a
“shocking state of affairs”.
Although there is now no
legal validity of Section 66A
the government wants to in-
troduce it through the back
door---a UN ad-hoc committee
which is supposed to submit
a draft convention on check-
ing cyber crime in member
states. India has proposed
that measures similar to
those contained in the de-
funct section be adopted by
the member countries to take
on cyber crime. Reports sug-
gest that so far there are no
takers of India’s proposal
which, if adopted, will make
it legally binding on member
states.
It is surprising that India
has gone to this extent to
bring back a discredited law
that strikes at an individual’s
freedom of speech and ex-
pression. Fortunately, there
are countries which, unlike
India, respect these freedoms
and have so far rejected the
proposal. The proposal in-
cludes “Sending offensive
messages through communi-
cation devices etc.” which
was used to hound activists,
students and journalists in
the country
. The ad-hoc com-
mittee is still discussing and
debating various proposals
and India hasn’t given up yet.

S
HEISANOPPORTUNIST!
ook, if you had, one shot or
one opportunity, to seize eve-
rything you ever wanted, in
one moment, would you cap-
ture it, or just let it slip?” –
these famous lines by a sing-
er describe an opportunist
who sees an opportunity and
takes advantage of it.
We may have heard some-
one say after a meeting, “he is
just an opportunist!” One has
often seen how an individual
seems to get a cushy assign-
ment while others seem to get
the heavy load or are com-
pletely pushed into the back-
ground. The opportunist had
quietly lobbied for the assign-
ment. He had spoken with a
couple of people ahead of the
meeting to ask for the specific
work. He did not do anything
unfair. While being alone
with the vice president, he
managed to steer the conver-
sation in his favour. It was a
quiet campaign. This is an
example / case of an honest
opportunist.
The label, ‘an opportunist’
usually has negative connota-
tions. It implies that people
take an unethical, unprinci-
pled, unfair or even illegal
advantage of situations for
selfish ends. Such persons are
also regarded as exploitative.
An opportunist is consid-
ered as one who is self-cen-
tred, unconcerned with the
feelings of others and always
looks out for his own inter-
ests often at the expense of
others.
All of us need to be on
guard against misuse of pow-
er. In almost every human
relationship, there are situa-
tions where one person has
an advantage over others in
terms of wealth, learning,
physical strength, position,
physical charm and many
others. The greater the ad-
vantage, the greater may the
temptation to use it for per-
sonal benefit.
There are ways to be genu-
inely opportunistic without
rubbing people the wrong
way, in fact, helping them
alongtheway
.Beinganoppor-
tunist is about our mindset. It
is looking ahead and deciding
which opening is worth ac-
cepting by weighing the pros
and cons of a situation.
An opportunist can also be
called an initiative taker, vi-
sionary, strategist and a far-
sighted person. He / she fol-
lows the maxim, ‘It is the lit-
tle things that add up to make
a big difference.’
Being a successful oppor-
tunist also requires a wider
perspective. That is, focusing
on all aspects of one’s life –
business, professional, fami-
ly, community and personal
development. How much bet-
ter would my life be if I took
more opportunities to spend
time with my family? And
how much more meaningful
would my life be if I look for
opportunities to help others?
Using any opportunity re-
quires balance. Venturing
into a different area can lead
to a new, previously unseen
and unidentified field. Suc-
cess in one area feeds suc-
cesses in other areas. One
can become a visionary, able
to differentiate between op-
portunities of the moment
and sustainable opportuni-
ties for the future.
Taking advantage of op-
portunities is proper, when it
means any action that takes
place because of a combina-
tion of favourable circum-
stances, time and suitable
place.
One can also think about
the opportunities when one
has to make good and healthy
choices throughout the day
like choosing low calorie
bites, drinking enough water,
reading books that inspire
and doing something useful
for others.
When do we find a task
most easy to do, while deal-
ing with problems or when
our life is relatively peaceful?
Using the time of peace or
calm, is like taking advan-
tage of the opportunity to ac-
complish the most.
Any period of peace is not
a time to relax but it is a time
to strengthen and prepare
oneself for future stress and
to devise strategies. It is a fa-
vourable opportunity to com-
plete one’s pending tasks.
Tranquil intervals that
one experiences now may not
continue for long. So, one can
ask oneself, how am I using
this time of quietness today?
Making the most of the fa-
vourable opportunity is like
making the most in the given
set of circumstances. Taking
full advantage of the calm
before the storm is a proac-
tive approach to life.
Opportunities that one has
today may be gone tomorrow.
None of us are immune to
unforeseen events and dis-
tractions. Seizing the unique
opportunity without hesita-
tion will reap benefits as time
appears to fly when we are
busy and pre-occupied with
what we are doing.
Since there is always more
to do than what we can han-
dle, it is wise to spend time in
line with our objectives in
life. Time well spent is an op-
portunity encashed.
So, let’s be a fair opportun-
ist, opening our mind and
heart to new ideas. It is the
way to succeed and thrive
with a vision.

on Friday lauded Cen-

The Minister said he
was pleased to note that
the pendency reduced
from about 40,000 cases
last year to around
27,000 cases at present,
while the disposal of
cases increased from

said that in the last

Kolkata (PTI): Facing
flak from the ruling
TMC over repeated de-
mands of division of
West Bengal by a sec-
tion of BJP legislators,
its national president
JP Nadda urged party
leaders to refrain from
speaking on the issue.
Nadda, on the con-
cluding day of his visit
to West Bengal, held a
meeting with BJP MPs
and MLAs in the after-
noon.
“During the meeting,
JP Nadda ji has asked
everybody to avoid
speaking about a sepa-
rate state or the division
of Bengal. “He has said
it is sending out a wrong
message among the
masses,andisnotinline
with the party’s official
position. It was made
clear that no one should
make any comment that
might cause embarrass-
ment for the party
,” a
senior BJP leader said.
The development
comes amid several BJP
leaders demanding ei-
ther a separate state or
a union territory, carv-
ing out districts of the
North Bengal region.
Kurseong BJP MLA
Bishnu Prasad Sharma
had on Thursday morn-
ing stoked the demand
for bifurcation of West
Bengal, and said he
would bring up the mat-
terduringNadda’smeet-
ing with the lawmakers.
BJP’s Alipurduar
MP John Barla and leg-
islators of Matigara-
Naxalbari and Dab-
gram-Phulbari seats
have also called for a
union territory to be
carved out of the North
Bengal district.

Patna: Central Govern-
ment Minister RCP
Singh has not resigned
yet and his party Janata
Dal (U) did not give him
a Rajya Sabha ticket. He
was hoping that the
BJP could send him to
the Upper House from
somewhere but the par-
ty did not even consider
him. Despite this, he is
not resigning. Chief
Minister Nitish Kumar
did not give him a ticket
and said that if his term
is not over yet, then he
does not need to resign.
Think, his term is
till July but isn’t it a
moral requirement
that he should resign
when he is not nomi-
nated to the Upper
House? If he continues,
he can stay for six
months even after the
term of the Rajya Sab-
ha is over. If the Prime
Minister wants, he can
keep him as a minister
for six months even af-
ter July or can also
nominate him to the
Rajya Sabha. But this
will happen only when
the BJP thinks that it
has to break ties with
Nitish Kumar in Bihar.
However, RCP Singh
has been a government
official and leaving the
post even a day before
the completion of his
term will not be an
easy decision for him.
Apart from RCP, the
suspense about JD(U) is
whether the party will
remain in the govern-
ment? At present,
JD(U)’s only represent-
ative in the central gov-
ernment is RCP Singh.
It is said that he had
joined the government
against the wishes of
Nitish Kumar, so Nitish
did not send him to the
Rajya Sabha. JD(U) has
17 MPs in Lok Sabha
and five in Rajya Sabha.
Based on the number of
Lok Sabha members,
JDU had demanded
three ministerial posts.
BJP, on the other hand,
made a formula that an
ally with one MP would
also have a minister
and an ally with 17 MPs
would also have only
one minister.
This formula of one
minister from every
ally was not acceptable
to Nitish Kumar. De-
spite this, RCP had be-
come a minister. Now
again it is being specu-
lated whether BJP will
agree to Nitish’s formu-
la and if BJP does not
agree then what will
JD(U) do? According to
informed sources,
JD(U) may agree on one
cabinet and one MoS
post. If this happens,
this time BJP’s national
president Rajiv Ranjan
Singh alias Lallan Sin-
gh can become a cabinet
minister and Santosh
Kushwaha can become
a minister of state
(MoS). RCP Singh had
also become a minister
at the Center as the na-
tional president and
later resigned from the
post of president.
Will Nitish continue to trouble BJP through RCP?

Bengaluru (Agen-

Karnataka had the last

three Rajya Sabha seats
it had contested in, out
of total four from the
state, that went for polls
on Friday, while the
Congress managed to
win only one of the two
seats to which it had
fielded its candidates.
The JD(S) which had
fielded one candidate
despite not having
enough votes, failed to
win any, as Congress
did not accept its re-

Sitharaman and

elected from Karnataka
to the Upper House of
Parliament for a con-
secutive term after this
election, for which
Members of Legislative
Assembly (MLAs) were
the voters.
There was suspense
over the outcome of the
contest for the fourth
seat, which witnessed a
tight contest between all
the three political par-
ties, as they had fielded
candidates despite none
of them having ade-
quate number of votes
to win it, and thereby
forcing an election.
A total of six candi-
dates were in the fray
for the Rajya Sabha
elections to the four
seats from the state, ne-
cessitating a contest for
the fourth one.
The fight for the
fourth seat saw a direct
contest between Siroya
(BJP’s third candidate),
Mansoor Ali Khan
(Congress’ second can-
didate) and D Kupendra
Reddy (JDS’ lone candi-

The election to four
Rajya Sabha seats was

due to expire on June

which began at the Vidhan Bhavan here

Out of the four Ra-

The guidelines, noti-

The petitioner challenged this order before the
high court contending that his appointment was
cancelled without holding an inquiry and proving
the allegations against him before the inquiry officer
by leading reliable evidence. It was submitted that
the order cancelling his appointment is absolutely
arbitrary and has been passed on the dictate of an
MLA. Against this backdrop, after hearing the rival
contentions, the court noted that only the complaint
made by Sanjay Pratap Jaiswal, a local MLA, and
Swami Prasad Maurya, the then minister of labour

force through the De-

ment of India. Officers
have to give their prop-
erty details online

system applicable for
IAS officers, the UP gov-
ernment has also imple-
mented this system for
PCS officers.
In the coming days, it
will be mandatory to

benefit from the new
system. The number of
senior PCS in UP is 355

Lucknow: The results
of the UP assembly polls
clearly indicate that the
BSP’s much hyped Dal-
it-Brahmin alliance for-
mulafrayedattheedges.
With the social engi-
neering formula losing
its impact, the BSP su-
premo seems to be disil-
lusioned with the Brah-
min factor. The specula-
tions in this regard
started gaining momen-
tum when the name of
party general secretary
Satish Chandra Mishra
appeared to be missing
from the list of star cam-
paigners of BSP for
Azamgarh by-election.
It is a well known fact
that in the year 2007, the
BSP had devised the
winning formula by
joining Dalit and Brah-
min voters together.
Then BSP was suc-
cessful in getting power
in UP by winning 206
assembly seats with
thirty percent vote
share. Then the party
fielded a record 86 Brah-
min candidates of
which 40 won. However,
in the elections that fol-
lowed, the graph of
Mayawati’s party’s elec-
toral performance con-
tinued to decline. To
overcome the setbacks,
in 2022 elections, the
BSP once again tried to
repeat the same old ex-
periment of social engi-
neering. Last year, the
party launched a cam-
paign for “Prabuddh Sa-
maaj Goshthi”—or the
Enlightened Class Con-
ferences to woo Brah-
mins. Satish Mishra
was entrusted with the
task of recreating Dal-
it-Brahmin chemistry
.
His wife Kalpana Mish-
ra and son Kapil Mishra
were also seen trying to
support him. His son-in-
law Paresh Mishra took
over the responsibility
of establishing the par-
ty’s roots through social
media campaigns. For-
mer cabinet minister
Nakul had accompanied
him in this campaign.
However, all their ef-
forts were in vain. Not
only did the party’s vote
share fall to 12.8 per
cent, it could get only
one assembly seat. The
BSP had fielded 65 Brah-
min candidates; but
none could win. May-
awati expelled Nakul
Dubey from the party
.
According to sources,
this was an indirect ex-
pression of displeasure
of Mayawati towards
Satish Mishra. Later,
the displeasure flared
up with Dubey joining
the Congress. Now, the
political corridors are
abuzz with the absence
of lawyer turned-politi-
cian Satish Mishra’s
name on the list of 40
star campaigners an-
nounced for the by-polls.

89% BRAHMINS VOTED FOR BJP
According to election surveys, 89 per cent Brahmins
voted in favor of BJP. Political observers assert that
Brahmins have long been with the BJP, particularly
so following the Ram temple movement in the late
1980s. In the intervening period, this community was
definitely associated with regional parties, but from
the year 2014 and onwards, these voters started turn-
ing overwhelmingly towards the saffron camp.

DENIAL OF PAYMENT TO FIRM
PRAYAGRAJ: The Allahabad High Court has asked the
state government to file an affidavit and explain why it
had not paid M/s Ganesh enterprises its dues for work
done in 2019 of installation of LED Flood Light in the
adarsh nagar panchayat area of Ballia district till date.
Justice Manoj Kumar Gupta and justice Dinesh Pathak
passed the order in a petition filed by M/s Ganesh enter-
prises, a partnership firm which was given the tender of
installation of lights in the panchayat area.
Advocate Parvez Iqbal Ansari appearing for the petition-
er firm argued that bills of Rs 94 lakhs were submitted
by the petitioner in 2019 and Rs 37 lakhs were received
by the firm as first installment while remaining were
not paid on the ground that the amount has not been
received from the State Finance Commission and once it

“Till date firm has not received it’s dues and is facing

world by storm.
The seven boys consist-
ently give their fans aka
ARMYS some beautiful
songs to jam to. Be it mu-
sic to cry to or a dance
number,BTShasprovided
with all. Now, the septet
band is coming up with
their new album ‘Proof’,
consisting of 3 CDs and 48
songs in total. On June 10,
they dropped their first
song ‘Yet to Come (The
Most Beautiful Moment)’,
a medium-tempo, alterna-
tive hip-hop track.
The music video refer-
ences several of their pre-
vious MVs. The lyrics
talk about being deemed
as the best by everyone
and the pressure they feel
by being put on a pedes-
tal. They further sing
about how they are just
boys who want to make
music and though every-
one thinks what they did
so far is the best, their
best is yet to come.
The first shot of the sep-
tet sitting on a chair is a
reference to their 2014
song, Just One Day
. Spring
Day
, one of the most influ-
ential songs of the group
has been referred to a lot
throughout the MV
, be it
their costumes or scenes.
A fan theory surfacing
online also drew the simi-
larity between their debut
title track ‘No More
Dream’ which was re-
leased the day BTS debut-
ed i.e., June 12, 2013. The
fan wrote, “In the No
More Dream MV
, the bus

out from the bus means
it’s the beginning of chap-
ter one?!?? And, in Yet To
Come MV
, they go back on
the bus like they’re leav-
ing. That means it’s the
end of chapter one..”
There have also been
references to their song
MVs of Blood Sweat and
Tears, Boy in Luv, DNA
and Love Yourself
among others. The
classicSmeraldoFlow-
er was also shown in the
music video which only a
die-hard ARMY could no-
tice. The album Proof cel-
ebrates the nine years of
BTS and gives way to
starting a new chapter in
their tenth year as artists.

on cloud nine about
the film. Rashmika
Mandanna revealed
how she got the offer of

The film happened just
at the right time when I
was getting done with all
of my prior commit-
ments and I was listening
to new scripts, it was the
right script that came at
the right time. It’s a film
for families, which I al-
ways wanted to do. Open-
ing about her role in the
film, she said, The char-

strong. She is stands up
for herself and is
supportive and
protective of

to Kareena, Malika wrote
back, ‘Sending you all…’ Karee-

share a great bond and are often seen hang-
ing out, partying and even going on vaca-
tions together. They were last seen to-
gether at Karan Johar’s lavish 50th

E
ver since Luv Ranjan announced his
film starring Ranbir Kapoor and
Shraddha Kapoor, fans have been ea-
gerly waiting to see this pair on the
silver screen. The stars have been shooting
for the film for quite some time now. Ranbir
was shooting for the film even at the time he
was getting married to Alia Bhatt. In the
video, we can see Ranbir Kapoor dressed in
a sheer white shirt with a touch of blue on it.
The actor paired it with white coloured jeans
too. Ranbir completed his look with black shoes.
The choreographer seems to be teaching both
him and Shraddha Kapoor the dance steps
and was seen dancing with the Sanju actor
while Shraddha looked at them.

Ear- lier dynasts, casteism, and corruption were synonymous with poli- tics. But Modi changed it to politics of develop- ment. That is why he gave the slogan of ‘Sab- ka Saaath, Sabka vi- kas’,” the BJP president said. Nadda recounted how vaccines like that against polio and en- cephalitis “took dec- ades to come to India” but under PM Modi’s leadership, India “de- veloped” two COVID-19 vaccines within a year. “The India of today develops its vaccines and provides it to other countries as well.” Hitting out at Sama- jwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav, he said, “I want to remind you of an irresponsible leader. When vaccina- tion started, Akhilesh Yadav termed the vac- cine, ‘BJP ka tika’. He himself took the vac- cine but advised the public not to take it.” On the occasion, Ut- tar Pradesh Chief Min- ister Yogi Adityanath said, “A group has de- veloped in UP that has benefited from the schemes initiated by the government under the leadership of Nar- endra Modi. First India Bureau Lucknow: Turmeric has a long history of it’s use in Asian, African and Caribbean cuisines and in no time this In- dian spice will be de- clared as One District One Product (ODOP) of Kushinagar and popu- larised among farmers. With Turmeric be- coming the ODOP of Kushinagar, the Bud- dhist pilgrimage site has the potential to be- come like the Erode, Sangli and Nizamabad districts of South In- dia, known for it’s high volume cultivation. The traditional way of cultivation of tur- meric in Kushinagar has a long history. It is mainly cultivated in Dudahi, Ramkola, Bis- hunpura, Khadda, Severhi, Kaptanganj, Kathkuiyan, and Fazil- nagar. Working towards the interest of farmers is the foremost priority of the Yogi Adityanath government. In this regard, the government will ex- plore the possibilities of cultivation of tur- meric in Kushinagar at its level. In 2014, the Sustain- able Human Develop- ment Association (SHDA), an organisa- tion working among farmers in collabora- tion with Tata Trusts, started a planned effort to cultivate it. The yield of local and developed species in the trial ranges from 150 to 400 quintals, respective- ly. At present, about 10,000 farmers of the district are associated with the cultivation of turmeric. According to Agri- cultural officer BM Tri- pathi, in the Agro cli- mate zone of Kushina- gar, Rajendra Sonia, Rajendra Sonali, Nar- endra Haldi-1 are the highest yielding spe- cies if the farmers are trained on a large scale about the improved methods of farming. If quality seeds of better species are pro- vided and cooperation in processing, packing and marketing of the produce is given, then turmeric can change the fortunes of the farmers of Kushina- gar, once infamous for poverty, hunger and malnutrition. TURMERIC IS ALL SET TO BE THE ODOP OF KUSHINAGAR DISTRICT NEWER DIMENSION  Yogi Adityanath govt will explore all possiblities to increase the production of turmeric in Kushinagar FACTFILE Yogi govt fills more than 40,000 vacancies in 5 yrs First India Bureau Lucknow: Yogi govern- ment has taken a big step to strengthen the education system and meet the teacher short- age. The Yogi government has filled vacancies in 40402 posts of second- ary education in the last five years between 2017 and 2022, while only 33574 persons were recruited during the SP-BSP regimes be- tween 2003 and 2017. Be in the world, but not of it. —Bhagavad Gita IN-DEPTH PROTESTS AFTER FRIDAY PRAYERS MANIFEST ANGER AT SHARMA, JINDAL uslims in several cit- ies took the police by surprise when they staged huge unan- nounced protests af- ter Friday prayers against BJP spokespersons Nupur Sharma and Naveen Jindal’s remarks against Prophet Muhammad and the government’s perceived inaction. The protests were held in Delhi, Moradabad, Saharan- pur, Prayagraj, Hyderabad, Kol- kata and Srinagar. Barring Prayagraj, the protests were peaceful. Who gave the call for these protests is not known. While an FIR has been regis- tered against Nupur Sharma and Naveen Jindal, the Muslims are demanding their arrest. These demonstrations follow protests by almost every Muslim country which forced an embar- rassed Indian government to describe Sharma and Jindal as “fringe” elements. These protests may die down but they signal a change in the Muslim response. The usual Muslim bashing in TV debates and at dharma sansad’s was still tolerable, but the right wing leaders crossed the threshold when they made objectionable remarks against the Prophet. They could have done without it. TOP TWEETS M ection 66A of the Information Tech- nology Act holds a special appeal for the Government of India. Grossly misused by law enforcement agencies to clamp down on right to ex- pression in the country, the controversial section was struck down by the Supreme Court in 2015 as “unconstitu- tional” for being in violation of Article 19 (1)(a). This Arti- cle gives people the right to free speech and expression. Despite the Supreme Court scrapping the section it con- tinued to be used by security agencies of various states. This invited the wrath of the top court which called it a “shocking state of affairs”. Although there is now no legal validity of Section 66A the government wants to in- troduce it through the back door---a UN ad-hoc committee which is supposed to submit a draft convention on check- ing cyber crime in member states. India has proposed that measures similar to those contained in the de- funct section be adopted by the member countries to take on cyber crime. Reports sug- gest that so far there are no takers of India’s proposal which, if adopted, will make it legally binding on member states. It is surprising that India has gone to this extent to bring back a discredited law that strikes at an individual’s freedom of speech and ex- pression. Fortunately, there are countries which, unlike India, respect these freedoms and have so far rejected the proposal. The proposal in- cludes “Sending offensive messages through communi- cation devices etc.” which was used to hound activists, students and journalists in the country . The ad-hoc com- mittee is still discussing and debating various proposals and India hasn’t given up yet. BRINGING BACK SEC 66A VIA UN It is surprising that India has gone to this extent to bring back a discredited law that strikes at an individual’s freedom of speech expression. Fortunately, there are countries which, unlike India, respect these. S HEISANOPPORTUNIST! ook, if you had, one shot or one opportunity, to seize eve- rything you ever wanted, in one moment, would you cap- ture it, or just let it slip?” – these famous lines by a sing- er describe an opportunist who sees an opportunity and takes advantage of it. We may have heard some- one say after a meeting, “he is just an opportunist!” One has often seen how an individual seems to get a cushy assign- ment while others seem to get the heavy load or are com- pletely pushed into the back- ground. The opportunist had quietly lobbied for the assign- ment. He had spoken with a couple of people ahead of the meeting to ask for the specific work. He did not do anything unfair. While being alone with the vice president, he managed to steer the conver- sation in his favour. It was a quiet campaign. This is an example / case of an honest opportunist. The label, ‘an opportunist’ usually has negative connota- tions. It implies that people take an unethical, unprinci- pled, unfair or even illegal advantage of situations for selfish ends. Such persons are also regarded as exploitative. An opportunist is consid- ered as one who is self-cen- tred, unconcerned with the feelings of others and always looks out for his own inter- ests often at the expense of others. All of us need to be on guard against misuse of pow- er. In almost every human relationship, there are situa- tions where one person has an advantage over others in terms of wealth, learning, physical strength, position, physical charm and many others. The greater the ad- vantage, the greater may the temptation to use it for per- sonal benefit. There are ways to be genu- inely opportunistic without rubbing people the wrong way, in fact, helping them alongtheway .Beinganoppor- tunist is about our mindset. It is looking ahead and deciding which opening is worth ac- cepting by weighing the pros and cons of a situation. An opportunist can also be called an initiative taker, vi- sionary, strategist and a far- sighted person. He / she fol- lows the maxim, ‘It is the lit- tle things that add up to make a big difference.’ Being a successful oppor- tunist also requires a wider perspective. That is, focusing on all aspects of one’s life – business, professional, fami- ly, community and personal development. How much bet- ter would my life be if I took more opportunities to spend time with my family? And how much more meaningful would my life be if I look for opportunities to help others? Using any opportunity re- quires balance. Venturing into a different area can lead to a new, previously unseen and unidentified field. Suc- cess in one area feeds suc- cesses in other areas. One can become a visionary, able to differentiate between op- portunities of the moment and sustainable opportuni- ties for the future. Taking advantage of op- portunities is proper, when it means any action that takes place because of a combina- tion of favourable circum- stances, time and suitable place. One can also think about the opportunities when one has to make good and healthy choices throughout the day like choosing low calorie bites, drinking enough water, reading books that inspire and doing something useful for others. When do we find a task most easy to do, while deal- ing with problems or when our life is relatively peaceful? Using the time of peace or calm, is like taking advan- tage of the opportunity to ac- complish the most. Any period of peace is not a time to relax but it is a time to strengthen and prepare oneself for future stress and to devise strategies. It is a fa- vourable opportunity to com- plete one’s pending tasks. Tranquil intervals that one experiences now may not continue for long. So, one can ask oneself, how am I using this time of quietness today? Making the most of the fa- vourable opportunity is like making the most in the given set of circumstances. Taking full advantage of the calm before the storm is a proac- tive approach to life. Opportunities that one has today may be gone tomorrow. None of us are immune to unforeseen events and dis- tractions. Seizing the unique opportunity without hesita- tion will reap benefits as time appears to fly when we are busy and pre-occupied with what we are doing. Since there is always more to do than what we can han- dle, it is wise to spend time in line with our objectives in life. Time well spent is an op- portunity encashed. So, let’s be a fair opportun- ist, opening our mind and heart to new ideas. It is the way to succeed and thrive with a vision. THE VIEWS EXPRESSED BY THE AUTHOR ARE PERSONAL “ L REKHA KUMAR The writer is a personal development skills facilitator. That is, focusing on all aspects of one’s life – business, professional, family, community and personal development. How much better would my life be if I took more opportunities to spend time with my family? And how much more meaningful would my life be if I look for opportunities to help others? The Minister said he was pleased to note that the pendency reduced from about 40,000 cases last year to around 27,000 cases at present, while the disposal of cases increased from 17017 in 2020-21 to 28901 in 2021-22. Addressing the 14th Special General Body Meeting of National Federation of Informa- tion Commissions of India (NFICI) at CIC Bhawan here, Dr Jiten- dra Singh said, “Ever since Modi Govern- ment came into power in 2014, Transparency, Accountability and Cit- izen-Centricity became the hallmark of the Governance Model. He said that in the last eight years, every con- scious decision was taken to strengthen the Independence and Re- sources of the Informa- tion Commissions.” The Union Minister noted that empowered citizens are an impor- tant pillar of democ- racy and the Central Information Commis- sion will continue to work for empowering the people through in- formation. Kolkata (PTI): Facing flak from the ruling TMC over repeated de- mands of division of West Bengal by a sec- tion of BJP legislators, its national president JP Nadda urged party leaders to refrain from speaking on the issue. Nadda, on the con- cluding day of his visit to West Bengal, held a meeting with BJP MPs and MLAs in the after- noon. “During the meeting, JP Nadda ji has asked everybody to avoid speaking about a sepa- rate state or the division of Bengal. “He has said it is sending out a wrong message among the masses, andisnotinline with the party’s official position. It was made clear that no one should make any comment that might cause embarrass- ment for the party ,” a senior BJP leader said. The development comes amid several BJP leaders demanding ei- ther a separate state or a union territory, carv- ing out districts of the North Bengal region. Kurseong BJP MLA Bishnu Prasad Sharma had on Thursday morn- ing stoked the demand for bifurcation of West Bengal, and said he would bring up the mat- terduringNadda’smeet- ing with the lawmakers. BJP’s Alipurduar MP John Barla and leg- islators of Matigara- Naxalbari and Dab- gram-Phulbari seats have also called for a union territory to be carved out of the North Bengal district. Himanshu Rawat Patna: Central Govern- ment Minister RCP Singh has not resigned yet and his party Janata Dal (U) did not give him a Rajya Sabha ticket. He was hoping that the BJP could send him to the Upper House from somewhere but the par- ty did not even consider him. Despite this, he is not resigning. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar did not give him a ticket and said that if his term is not over yet, then he does not need to resign. Think, his term is till July but isn’t it a moral requirement that he should resign when he is not nomi- nated to the Upper House? If he continues, he can stay for six months even after the term of the Rajya Sab- ha is over. If the Prime Minister wants, he can keep him as a minister for six months even af- ter July or can also nominate him to the Rajya Sabha. But this will happen only when the BJP thinks that it has to break ties with Nitish Kumar in Bihar. However, RCP Singh has been a government official and leaving the post even a day before the completion of his term will not be an easy decision for him. Apart from RCP, the suspense about JD(U) is whether the party will remain in the govern- ment? At present, JD(U)’s only represent- ative in the central gov- ernment is RCP Singh. It is said that he had joined the government against the wishes of Nitish Kumar, so Nitish did not send him to the Rajya Sabha. JD(U) has 17 MPs in Lok Sabha and five in Rajya Sabha. Based on the number of Lok Sabha members, JDU had demanded three ministerial posts. BJP, on the other hand, made a formula that an ally with one MP would also have a minister and an ally with 17 MPs would also have only one minister. This formula of one minister from every ally was not acceptable to Nitish Kumar. De- spite this, RCP had be- come a minister. Now again it is being specu- lated whether BJP will agree to Nitish’s formu- la and if BJP does not agree then what will JD(U) do? According to informed sources, JD(U) may agree on one cabinet and one MoS post. If this happens, this time BJP’s national president Rajiv Ranjan Singh alias Lallan Sin- gh can become a cabinet minister and Santosh Kushwaha can become a minister of state (MoS). RCP Singh had also become a minister at the Center as the na- tional president and later resigned from the post of president. Will Nitish continue to trouble BJP through RCP? TOXIC ALLIANCE! On Friday morn- ing, police in Kannur served a notice to State Congress presi- dent K.Sudhakaran saying that they sus- pect violence during the party’s march to the District Collec- torate office, and if so strict action would be taken against him. This was taken up by each leader who inaugurated the protest in front of the remaining 12 district collector- ates and also in front of the State secretariat here. In most of the dis- trict headquarters, there were exchange of force between the protesters and the police. At several places, the police were forced to resort to water cannons and lathi charge to dis- perse them. CRUCIAL READ Hyderabad: Telangana BJP chief Bandi Sanjay was Friday placed under house arrest here to prevent him from staging a protest at Jubilee Bus Station (JBS) against hike in bus fares. Sanjay was scheduled to lead a protest by the party at JBS against the imposition of additional diesel cess by the Telan- gana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC). Policemen were deployed around the house of Sanjay in Banjara Hills to stop him from coming out. However, the police action was in view of the possibility of Sanjay staging a protest at the DGP office against the arrest of a party leader Jitta Balakrishna Reddy. New Delhi: A Delhi court on Friday adjourned the order on the interim bail plea of Sharjeel Imam in the sedition case. The court is likely to pronounce the order on July 7, 2022. Imam had moved the trial court for bail in view of the recent direction of the Supreme Court on the law of sedition. The court had reserved the order on June 6. Additional Sessions Judge Amitab Rawat on Fri- day was to pronounce the order. Imam was produced through videoconferencing from Tihar Jail. The parties were informed during the proceedings through VC that the order on the bail application and hearing has been adjourned for 7 July. T’GANA BJP CHIEF PLACED UNDER HOUSE ARREST SHARJEEL BAIL PLEA VERDICT ON JULY 7 Bengaluru (Agen- cies): The ruling BJP in Karnataka had the last laugh as it won all the three Rajya Sabha seats it had contested in, out of total four from the state, that went for polls on Friday, while the Congress managed to win only one of the two seats to which it had fielded its candidates. The JD(S) which had fielded one candidate despite not having enough votes, failed to win any, as Congress did not accept its re- quest for support in the name of secularism. Union Finance Minis- ter Nirmala Sithara- man, actor-politician Jaggesh, and outgoing MLCLeharSinghSiroya of BJP, and former Un- ion Minister Jairam Ramesh of Congress weredeclaredvictorious by the poll officials after counting of votes. Sitharaman and Ramesh have been re- elected from Karnataka to the Upper House of Parliament for a con- secutive term after this election, for which Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) were the voters. There was suspense over the outcome of the contest for the fourth seat, which witnessed a tight contest between all the three political par- ties, as they had fielded candidates despite none of them having ade- quate number of votes to win it, and thereby forcing an election. A total of six candi- dates were in the fray for the Rajya Sabha elections to the four seats from the state, ne- cessitating a contest for the fourth one. The fight for the fourth seat saw a direct contest between Siroya (BJP’s third candidate), Mansoor Ali Khan (Congress’ second can- didate) and D Kupendra Reddy (JDS’ lone candi- date). The election to four Rajya Sabha seats was necessitated as the term of office of mem- bers — Nirmala Sithar- aman and K C Rama- murthy of BJP and Jairam Ramesh — is due to expire on June 30. The fourth member Oscar Fernandes of the Congress passed away last year. Sitharaman, 2 others register win in K’taka RS polls; Cong nets 1 seat The JD(S) leadership on Friday claimed at least two disgruntled MLAs did not vote in favour of its can- didate in the Rajya Sabha polls for four seats from Karnataka, defying the party’s diktat, with one of its legislators admitting he did so since he “loved” voting for the Congress nominee. The regional party’s Kolar MLA K Srinivas Gowda cast his vote for the Congress candidate, while Gubbi MLA S R Srinivas put a blank ballot paper into the box, which will be counted as invalid, JD(S) legislature party leader H D Kumaras- wamy said, fuming at his colleagues. MALIK, DESHMUKH NOT ALLOWED TO VOTE AS RAJYA SABHA POLLS END Bombay High Court on Friday refused to grant any relief to Maharashtra Cabinet Minister Nawab Malik on his plea seeking permission to vote in the Rajya Sabha polls, voting for which is underway. Malik’s legal team gave up by afternoon, while the former Maharash- tra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh’s lawyers have not mentioned his plea to vote before the court so far. Voting for six seats of Rajya Sabha in the state, which began at the Vidhan Bhavan here at 9 am, continued till 4 pm. The bench of Justice PD Naik, before whom Malik’s plea first came up for hearing, asked his lawyers to amend his petition. The plea before the High Court was filed as a writ petition invoking Article 227 of the Constitution and Section 482 of the CrPC to quash the order of the special judge who had refused relief to Malik. The polling for 16 Rajya Sabha seats, spanning across Maharash- tra, Karnataka, Ra- jasthan, and Hary- ana, was conduct- ed earlier on Fri- day. The voting for 16 vacant seats in Ra- jya Sabha in four states — Rajas- than, Haryana, Karnataka and Maharashtra — concluded at 4 pm on Friday. In Kar- nataka, BJP candi- dates Finance Min- ister Nirmala Sitharaman, ac- tor-politician Jag- gesh and MLC Le- har Singh Siroya won three RS seats for the party, Jai- ram Ramesh clinched one for Congress while JD(S) drew blank. Out of the four Ra- jya Sabha seats that went to the polls in Rajasthan, Congress bagged three while the BJP won the re- maining one. Ran- deep Surjewala, Mukul Wasnik and Pramod Tiwari were the winners from Congress. Ghanshyam Ti- wari clinched one seat for the BJP in the state. While counting was scheduled to begin at 5 pm, two Congress MLA votes that have come under cloud for allegedly violat- ing “secrecy norms” have result- ed in a delay in the counting of votes for two Rajya Sabha seats in Haryana. While the ruling BJP and the candi- date it supported, Kartikeya Sharma, cried foul alleging that the returning officer did not con- duct fair polling, the opposition Con- gress said the “poll- ing was totally fair” and it was only a “tactic” being ad- opted by BJP after realising that they had lost the battle. The biennial elections to Rajya Sabha were held to fill 57 seats in the Upper House across 15 states.

Gyanendra Kumar Shukla Lucknow: The results of the UP assembly polls clearly indicate that the BSP’s much hyped Dal- it-Brahmin alliance for- mulafrayedattheedges. With the social engi- neering formula losing its impact, the BSP su- premo seems to be disil- lusioned with the Brah- min factor. The specula- tions in this regard started gaining momen- tum when the name of party general secretary Satish Chandra Mishra appeared to be missing from the list of star cam- paigners of BSP for Azamgarh by-election. It is a well known fact that in the year 2007, the BSP had devised the winning formula by joining Dalit and Brah- min voters together. Then BSP was suc- cessful in getting power in UP by winning 206 assembly seats with thirty percent vote share. Then the party fielded a record 86 Brah- min candidates of which 40 won. However, in the elections that fol- lowed, the graph of Mayawati’s party’s elec- toral performance con- tinued to decline. To overcome the setbacks, in 2022 elections, the BSP once again tried to repeat the same old ex- periment of social engi- neering. Last year, the party launched a cam- paign for “Prabuddh Sa- maaj Goshthi”—or the Enlightened Class Con- ferences to woo Brah- mins. Satish Mishra was entrusted with the task of recreating Dal- it-Brahmin chemistry . His wife Kalpana Mish- ra and son Kapil Mishra were also seen trying to support him. His son-in- law Paresh Mishra took over the responsibility of establishing the par- ty’s roots through social media campaigns. For- mer cabinet minister Nakul had accompanied him in this campaign. However, all their ef- forts were in vain. Not only did the party’s vote share fall to 12.8 per cent, it could get only one assembly seat. The BSP had fielded 65 Brah- min candidates; but none could win. May- awati expelled Nakul Dubey from the party . According to sources, this was an indirect ex- pression of displeasure of Mayawati towards Satish Mishra. Later, the displeasure flared up with Dubey joining the Congress. Now, the political corridors are abuzz with the absence of lawyer turned-politi- cian Satish Mishra’s name on the list of 40 star campaigners an- nounced for the by-polls.
