that he had received in-

Lucknow: In Yogi’s UP,
expressways maybe
scripting a silent trans-
formation in a state
known for its poor qual-
ity of roads but what
has come as a shocker is
that UP tops the chart
in the country for max-
imumnumberof deaths
in accidents on national
highways.
The revelation has
been made in a ‘Road
Safety Campaign, Road
Accidents in India
2020’, a study released
by the Union ministry
of road transport and
highways (MoRTH).
According to the re-
port, In 2020, 3,66,138
road accidents were re-
ported by states/UTs,
of which, 1,16,496
(31.82%) were on na-
tional highways; 47,984
(36.43%) people were
killed and 1,09,898
(31.55%) were injured.
“The fact that much of
the 31.8% of the acci-
dents, 36.4% of deaths
and 31.6% of acci-
dents-related injuries
took place on national
highways, which share
only 2.1% of the total
road network in the
country, needs atten-
tion,” the report stated.
“More accidents on
the highways have been
attributed to higher ve-
hicle speeds and higher
volume of traffic on
these roads.” UP alone,
according to the report,
accounted for 16.4% of
the road accident
deaths on national
highways in India, fol-
lowed by Maharashtra
(7.4%) and Karnataka
(6.9%); Tamil Nadu re-
ported the highest num-
ber of accidents on na-
tional highways.
Tamil Nadu topped
the list for the fifth con-
secutive year in terms
of the number of acci-
dents 15,269 (13.1%), fol-
lowed by UP with 13,695
(11.1%), Karnataka
with 11,230 (9.6%), and
MP with 9,866 (9.6%).
The report also
showed that 10,492 acci-
dents took place in UP
in the recorded year,
killing 5,984 persons on
national highways un-
der NHAI, while 1,265
people died in 2,159 mis-
haps on national high-
ways under PWD.

MITHALI RAJ CALLS
IT A DAY, LEAVES
WOMEN’S CRICKET
ON A HIGH NOTE
ce woman cricketer
Mithali Raj has been
a prominent name in
the cricketing world.
As a batswoman she
has several achievements to her
credit and has been admired for
her batting skills. Her calling it
a day from all forms of interna-
tional cricket will leave a void in
Indian women’s cricket al-
though the new crop of Team
India players have the potential
they will take time to attain that
level of maturity
.
India has had some great
women cricketers. Diana
Eduljee, who captained India in
1978 and holds the record for
bowling the most number of
balls---5098---in women’s test his-
tory and Neetu David, the slow
left-arm spinner who was the
first Indian bowler to take 100
wickets in women’s ODIs, to
name just two.
They were quality players but
what keeps Mithali apart is her
batting prowess and competitive
attitude on the field. She is the
only Indian batswoman to have
scored a double century
.
A
here is no limit to

chauvinists won’t
stoop to. Hackles

and those from Kollywood, the
South Indian film industry
,
wereraisedwhenUnionHome
Minister Amit Shah batted for
HindiasanalternativetoEng-
lish in the country
. A debate
raged over the issue with
South Indian states aligned
against the suggestion to re-
place English with Hindi. It is
notthefirsttimethattheSouth
has taken a firm stand against
Hindi as a national language.
The first row started in Tamil
Nadu in 1937 when Hindi was
proposed to be introduced as a
compulsory subject.
It is the degeneration of the
discourse this time around
which is shocking and baf-
fling. Ruling DMK’s Rajya
SabhaMPTKSElangovansaid
thatHindiwasthelanguageof

said.Hethenwentontoblame
Hindi for the under-develop-
ment of northern states.
To identify a language with
a caste and economic develop-
ment is a case of extreme in-
sensitivity
. First, like the rest
of India Tamil Nadu’s society
is as caste-riven as any other
in the country
. Before the As-
sembly elections in 2021 AI-
ADMK-BJP and the DMK
depended on caste formulas
targeting the over 20 percent
Scheduled Castes.
Linking language to devel-
opment is an absolutely bi-
zarre logic. If Kerala, Tamil
Nadu, Karnataka have done
well it is not because of Eng-
lish but due to successive
governments which created
the right eco-system for pro-
gress. States in north India
became laggards because of
religion, crime and corrup-
tion, lack of proper infra-
structure and connectivity
.
DON’T BLAME HINDI
FOR POVERTY
It is the degeneration of the discourse this time around
which is shocking and baffling. Ruling DMK’s Rajya Sabha
MP TKS Elangovan said that Hindi was the language of
Shudras. “Imposition of Hindi will make us
Shudras,” he said. He then went on to blame Hindi for
the under-development of northern states
T
QUAD - CHINA
AND THE PACIFIC
On the other hand,
Politically and
diplomatically, we should
ensure continued
international pressure at
China’s sore thumb like
South China Sea, Taiwan
and Hong Kong. We need to
continue to isolate China on
its insidious role in starting
the current pandemic and
strengthen the Quad and
other multilateral regional
groupings of like-minded
countries. Well, if India
achieves all this, it will
dominate the Asian
continent and will emerge
as a world leader
he much-publicised recent
Tokyo summit 22 of QUAD
conference held in the back-
drop of Russia - Ukraine con-
flict is opening vistas of a
new world order aligning US,
India, Japan and Australia.
Conceptualised by Japan in
2007 It was revived in 2017
with first ministerial level
meeting at New York in 2019.
According to experts, the
main undeclared objective of
the formation of QUAD is to
rein in the increasing influ-
ence of China in the Indo-
Pacific region and to develop
a strategy to protect trade sea
routes free of any control
amid China’s growing mili-
tary existence in the strate-
gic Indo-Pacific region.
While the leaders of the
four member countries of
QUAD seemed pretty sure of
achieving their goal, China
almost mocked them and saw
no reason to worry. Chinese
leaders termed it as merely
“a headline-grabbing idea”.
Beijing believed that all the
four leaders were pursuing
strategies that were too di-
vergent to be coherent.
As a military analyst, I be-
lieve that Chinese leadership
perceived that while America
is pressing ‘The America is
back Policy’ under Joe Biden
for existing and future allies,
Australia and Japan are in-
terested only in keeping the
sea trade routes open without
third parties political and/or
Military interference. And,
Indian vision is to neutralize,
contain and counter Chinese
intrusions and dominance in
the sub-continent.
Before we dwell further, let
us have a look at this region.
Theregionconsistsof 14coun-
tries: Australia, Bangladesh,
Burma, India, Indonesia, Ja-
pan, Malaysia, New Zealand,
the Philippines, Singapore,
South Korea, Taiwan, Thai-
land and Vietnam. The region
has main sea trade routes and
therefore, an engine of the
global economy and that is
why the clash of TITANS.
China has been opposed to
QUAD Since its very incep-
tion and sees it as a strategy
to prevent its global rise and
interests. Often, China has
termed QUAD as Asian
NATO. And since the dilution
of NATO during Ukraine
war, China is seemingly clear
that QUAD will also disinte-
grate when tested under eco-
nomic and resources pres-
sures on member countries.
So, is it that QUAD is
shrouded in fears of an obso-
lete Cold War perceptions of
yester years and a military
confrontation in Ukraine of
current times? May be.
Since a joint statement by
QUAD countries about ‘spirit
of the QUAD’ is issued, Bei-
jing is advocating the need
for openness, inclusiveness
and a win-win situation in
the region and international
systems. It is further advis-
ing to refrain from forming
“cliques like NATO & QUAD.
Though, it refuses to accept
the same principles when it
comes to south China sea.
Therefore, to deal with the
challenges posed, China is
considering a double prong
pincer assault by forming an
institutionalize if not milita-
rize concept of a “Himalayan
Quad”—comprising China,
Nepal, Pakistan, and Afghan-
istan as a rival group, which
obviously will be no match to
QUAD but may suit the Chi-
nese design of rising to pow-
er with smaller groups,
neighbourhood politics, and
weaker countries that could
be a part and parcel of China
shaping a stronger world-
view across the region.
And secondly work on a
‘Debt Trap’ diplomacy on nu-
meroussmallislandcountries
in the Pacific region like Fiji,
Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu
and the Solomon. Xi knows
these nations are too poor to
service debt, yet he is ready to
lend the money to repeat a
Hambantota. Thereby
, strate-
gicallysurroundingAustralia
and dominating the sea trade
routes of Japan & Australia
with rest of the world.

isterWangYiisvisitingSouth
Pacific Island nations to ramp
up ties with the strategically
located island nations to fulfil
their aim of financially chok-
ing Australia and Japan with
its clear fall out on American
trade balance.
India amidst these testing
times has a crucial role to
play. While on one hand it
needs to step up deterrence
in military terms by deploy-
ing additional army strength
with state-of-the-art weapon
systems to counter the drag-
on to work out “no war pact”
with China and a time-bound
solution of our border issues.

First India Bureau
Lucknow: In the poli-
tics of India, any leader
is established as a lead-
er of a particular caste
only when he or she can
provide votes of his
caste to the candidate
of other caste instead
of himself or the candi-
date of his own caste.
Samajwadi Party Na-
tional President Akh-
ilesh Yadav contested
from Azamgarh seat in
the 2019 Lok Sabha elec-
tions.
He got more than 60
percent of the votes in
this Muslim and Yadav-
dominated seat. The
BJP had also fielded a
Yadav candidate, but it
got half of the votes
polled by Akhilesh.
Whatever votes the Ya-
davs had in Azamgarh,
almost one hundred
percent of the votes
went to Akhilesh. But
this does not establish
Akhilesh as the leader
of the Yadavs. It is not a
big deal for him or any
other Yadav candidate
of his party to get Yadav
votes.
The true test of his
‘political might’ will be
tested this time since he
has fielded a non-Yadav
candidate from Azam-
garh seat.
Akhilesh has given
ticket to Dalit leader Su-
shil Anand for the
Azamgarh seat that fell
vacant due to his resig-
nation. Sushil Anand is
the son of Balihari
Babu, a prominent Dalit
leader who was one of
the founders of BAM-
CEF.
Balihari Babu has
been in BSP for a long
time. Akhilesh has
played undertaken a
huge risk by giving tick-
et to his son. Keep in
mind that in the last as-
sembly elections, the
BSP had helped the BJP
by letting its core Dalit
vote go to the BJP. This
time Akhilesh has giv-
en ticket to a strong
Dalit leader who re-
mained in his party, to
counter the BJP’s strat-
egy. It will be interest-
ing to see whether the
Dalits of Azamgarh
vote for the candidate
of their own caste or do
they vote for the Mus-
lim candidate of BSP on
Mayawati’s appeal?
On the other hand,
BJP has once again
made Dinesh Lal Yadav
Nirhua, who contested
the elections last time,
as its candidate. He is a
big star of Bhojpuri
films. But could not
stand in front of Akh-
ilesh. So, this time Akh-
ilesh’s test is whether
he can prepare the Ya-
davs of Azamgarh to
vote for the Dalit candi-
date of SP over the Ya-
dav candidate of BJP.
On the other hand,
Mayawati’s test is
whether she is able to
prepare Dalits to vote
for the Muslim candi-
date of BSP over the
Dalit candidate of SP.
The outcome of this one
seat will decide a the po-
litical ‘swings’ in the
coming time.
Will Akhilesh and Mayawati prove their ‘salt’ in Azamgarh bypoll?

HC issues notices to CBI, govt

New Delhi: The Bom-

Thursday issued notic-
es to the Central Bureau

A bench of Chief Jus-

agencies and Jaiswal to
file their replies to the
plea by July 18.
The bench was hear-
ing a plea filed by Ra-
jendra Trivedi, former
ACP of the Maharash-

On Thursday, Trive-

affidavit, stating that a
private complaint of
defamation was filed
against Jaiswal in 2012
and a magistrate’s court

The matter was pend-

on July 28.
Jaiswal, who had ear-
lier held the post of Ma-
harashtra’s Director
General of Police

as the CBI director in
May last year.
In his plea, filed
through Advocate Tale-
kar, Trivedi has sought
that Jaiswal’s appoint-
ment as the CBI direc-
tor be quashed.
Trivedi in his plea
claimed Jaiswal’s ap-
pointment was in con-
travention of the Delhi
Police Establishment
Act, and sought that the
high court call for the
records and proceed-
ings of the three-mem-
ber committee that had
approved Jaiswal’s can-
didature.

CONG LEADER
KHURSHID
CAUGHT ON THE
WRONG FOOT
Acollage of images is being
shared on social media
claiming them to be the recent
pictures of the demolished
Muslim households in Unnao and
Farrukhabad (UP). This post
claims that the CM Yogi
Adityanath government in Uttar
Pradesh is intentionally targeting
Muslims and bulldozing their
houses in the state. Congress
leader Salman Khurshid had also
shared these images with a
similar claim on his social media
handles. Sharing a series of
photos of demolished buildings,
Khurshid tweeted, “Not Ukraine,
these are photos of Unnao and
Farrukhabad of Buldozerland”.
However, the @InfoUPFactCheck
Twitter handle of the UP
government has termed the news
as fake. “Images of demolition of
houses in Unnao and
Farrukhabad in the year 2016 by
some accounts on social media
platforms are currently creating
confusion by making them viral.

NO MAJOR
RELIEF FROM
INTENSE HEAT
TILL JUNE 15,
SAYS IMD
The maximum temperature in
Delhi-NCR and other parts of
northwest India will come down
by a few notches over the
weekend but no major relief is
likely till June 15, the India
Meteorological Department said
on Thursday. It said moisture-
laden easterly winds will provide
significant relief from the searing
heat June 16 onwards. Heatwave
conditions prevailed in parts of
Haryana, Punjab, Delhi, Rajasthan,
Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and
Odisha on Thursday, with
Faridabad in the National Capital
Region being the hottest place in
the country at 47.1 degrees
Celsius. At least 32 towns and
cities across these states reported
maximum temperatures above 44
degrees Celsius. Northwest and
central India is reeling under a
heatwave spell since June 2 due
to an onslaught of hot and dry
westerly winds. “The ongoing
heatwave spell is less intense as
compared to those recorded in
April-end and May, but the area of
impact is almost equal,” senior
IMD scientist R K Jenamani said.
Pre-monsoon activity is predicted
over east Madhya Pradesh,
Chhattisgarh and Odisha from
June 12, but north Rajasthan,
Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar
Pradesh and north MP will
continue to see above normal
temperatures till June 15, the IMD
official said. “Parts of northwest
India, including Delhi-NCR, may
report a marginal relief on June
11-12. There will be cloudy
weather over the weekend but
rainfall is unlikely,” he added. The
temperature will hover between
40 degrees Celsius and 43
degrees Celsius till June 15. “The
region may see thunderstorms
and rainfall due to moisture-laden
easterly winds June 16 onwards
which is expected to bring a
significant relief from the heat,”
he said. Between June 16 and
June 22, maximum temperatures
are likely to remain “below normal
to near normal”, the IMD said in
an extended range forecast. —PTI

NEARLY 70 HELD FOR SMUGGLING
LIQUOR FROM DELHI: OFFICIALS
First India Bureau
Noida (PTI): Nearly 70
people have been arrest-
ed for smuggling liquor
from Delhi to UP in the
current financial year
due to heavy discounts
being offered on booze
in the national capital,
an excise official said.
The excise officials have
seized over 10,000 litres
of illicit liquor and im-
pounded over 20 vehi-
cles, mostly two-wheel-
ers and private cars,
since April 1, they said.
Gautam Buddh Na-
gar’s Excise Officer
Rakesh Bahadur Singh
said that there has been
a spike in cases of peo-
ple bringing liquor from
Delhi to UP through
Noida since the new ex-
cise policy under which
liquor prices have come
down almost by half.
Delhi’s new excise poli-
cy was implemented in
November, 2021. The ac-
tivity dents UP’s reve-

68 people have been ar-
rested while smuggling
liquor from Delhi to UP
through the porous bor-
ders in Noida’s Sector
14A, Ashok Nagar, Kon-
dli, Jhandupura and Ka-
lindi Kunj, he said. Dur-
ing the period, 10,056 li-
tres of alcohol, includ-
ing India-made foreign
liquor country-made
brands,wasseizedwhile
23 vehicles, including
mostly two-wheelers
andcars,wereimpound-
ed, the officer said. Of
these 68 people, 62 were
jailed while the remain-
ing six were acquitted,
Singh said, adding that
the UP Excise Depart-
ment is very clear that
action has to be taken
against those indulging
in interstate smuggling.
The excise officer of
Gautam Buddh Nagar,
which borders Delhi on
one side and Haryana
on the other, suggested
a spike in the arrest and
seizure of illicit liquor
in UP’s territory. He
said, “In the financial
year 2021-22, the district
excise department had
arrested and got 173 peo-
ple jailed as compared
to nearly 70 in just over
two months this year.”

NTPC’s Tapovan-Vishnugad hydel project, 2 disfigured bodies with the head of
one missing were found in a tunnel at the project site, police said on Thursday.
The headless body and a body part belonging to another victim were found in-
side the Intel Tunnel when it was being cleaned of rubble on Wednesday, they
said. A glacial burst had triggered a flash flood in the Rishi Ganga and Dhauli
Ganga rivers in February 2021 completely demolishing the Rishi Ganga hydel
project and ravaging parts of the NTPC’s Tapovan Vishnugad hydro-electricity
project being built over Dhauli Ganga. Over 200 people working inside the
tunnels of these projects perished in the tragedy. Bodies continue to be found
stuck in tonnes of rubble still choking the tunnels of the NTPC’s project.

Akhilesh’s daunting
challenge: To keep
flock together
Mahan Dal announced
snapping of ties
with the SP-led alliance
Shivpal Yadav blamed
SP’s organisational
structure for poll debacle
1 2
Gyanendra Kumar Shukla
Lucknow: The ambi-
tious alliance that Akh-
ilesh Yadav cobbled to-
gether by stitching
small caste-based par-
ties ahead of the 2022
UP assembly polls is
beginning to unravel.
The Mahan Dal of Kes-
hav Dev Maurya has
announced to snap ties
with the SP-led alliance.
At the same time, the
displeasure of PSPL
Chief Shivpal Singh Ya-
dav and SBSP Chief
Omprakash Rajbhar is
increasing gradually
.
Notably, late last year
Akhilesh Yadav entered
into a tie-up with seven
parties -- the Rashtriya
Lok Dal (RLD), Mahan
Dal, Janwadi Party (So-
cialist), Apna Dal fac-
tion led by Krishna Pa-
tel, Suheldev Bhartiya
Samaj Party (SBSP),
Shivpal Yadav’s
Pragatisheel Samajwa-
di Party (PSPL) and
Gondwana Gantantra
Party. This coalition
based on caste calcula-
tion proved unsuccess-
ful in achieving elector-
al victory, since then
the signs of disintegra-
tion started reflecting
in this alliance. The dis-
satisfaction of the Jan-
wadi Party leader San-
jay Chauhan during the
ticket distribution had
exposed the weaknesses
of the alliance. Post-as-
sembly election results,
Mahan Dal Chief Kes-
hav Dev Maurya started
making scathing state-
ments targeting BJP
turncoat Swami Prasad
Maurya. Keshav Dev
was upset that he was
not given adequate
seats and his party was
ignored in comparison
to other allies.
Akhilesh’s estranged
uncle and PSPL chief
Shivpal Yadav has
blamed the SP’s organi-
zational structure for
the poll debacle. On sev-
eral occasions, he has
indicated to leave the
alliance and choose a
different path. In fact,
the row erupted in the
coalition camp after
Akhilesh Yadav’s deci-
sion to quit the post of
MP and retain the post
of Karhal MLA. Azam
Khan and Shivpal Ya-
dav, who were eyeing
the post of Leader of
Opposition, were quite
dissatisfied with this
decision.
Although Azam ’s
displeasure has faded
since his supporters
were adjusted in the Ra-
jya Sabha, Lok Sabha
by-elections and MLC
elections, Shivpal Singh
Yadav’s anger remains
intact.
First India Bureau
Lucknow: Even as a
row has erupted in
the UP Congress over its
decision not to contest
Lok Sabha byelections
in Rampur and
Azamgarh, the party
leader Nawab Kazim Ali
Khanof Rampurhasan-
nounced to support the
BJP candidate Ghan-
shyam Lodhi.
The Congress deci-
sion of staying away
from byelection has trig-
gered a war of words
among the state leaders
questioning leadership
move. In Rampur, how-
ever, a piquant situation
has developed with the
announcement of Kaz-
im Ali Khan who had
sought permission from
the high command to
join the fray
.
While Khan, who had
lost assembly election
against Azam Khan in
Rampur, his son Haider
Ali Khan, who was
Apna Dal-BJP allies
candidate from Swar
against Azam Khan’s
son Abdullah Azam.
But he was defeated.
The decision to support
BJP’s Lodhi was an-
nounced after a meet-
ing between the two at
Noor Mahal. Kazim Ali
said there was no ques-
tion of supporting SP’s
Asim Raja a close confi-
dent of Azam Khan.
Kazim Ali said “the
Congressleadershiphas
been misinformed and
got wrong feedback of
the ground situation
from those with vested
political and financial
interests. All I have been
saying is that Congress
is a bigger party at the
national level, while Sa-
majwadi Party has only
three MPs. The Con-
gress should have con-
tested bypoll”. However,
theUPCCvicepresident
(incharge administra-
tion) Yogesh Dixit there
was nothing much to
comment on the issue at
the moment. He said the
party’s disciplinary de-
partment was looking
into the matter and a
decision would be taken
soon.

He said the ideologies
of the SBSP and the Ma-
han Dal were similar to
that of the BJP and add-
ed Rajbhar “talks about

trodden and PM Naren-

The BJP leader also
said whoever had en-

SURJEWALA SEES DRAUPADI IN SITA, BJP
SEES RED, ASKS WHY CONG ‘HATES’ HINDUS
Jaipur: Congress leader Randeep Surjewala, a candidate for the Rajya Sabha polls
from Rajasthan, was expressing confidence of the party’s victory when by mistake
he referred to Sita.“Majority will win, democracy will win, Constitution will win, law
will win, morality will win and those who are under cover of lies like at one time
Sita Maiya’s ‘cheerharan’ had happened they want to do ‘cheerharan’ of democ-
racy, those people will be defeated and exposed,” he told reporters in Udaipur on
Thursday. Sharing a video of Surjewala, BJP national spokesperson Rajyavardhan
Singh Rathore asked, “Why the Congress hates Hindus so much.” “Rahul Gandhi,
who does election tours from temple to temple, is irritated by a sacred word like
Hindutva. His party keeps insulting Lord Ram. Today again, the Congress has hurt
the faith of Hindus by making indecent remarks on Mata Sita,” tweeted Rathore,
who is the Jaipur (Rural) MP.

A TRANSMISSION OF FEELING
A TRANSMISSION OF FEELING
kirts aren’t
given enough
credit. Trou-
sers and jeans,
as well as
skirts and
even shorts,
are frequently dis-
cussed. But what about
skirts? No. They’re rel-
egated to the bottom of
the fashion food chain,
where they’re worn
regularly but seldom
highlighted. We believe
it is critical that we ex-
plore the often-over-
looked silhouette and
begin to give it the at-
tention it deserves.
A-LINE SKIRT
Forthepear-shapedphy-
sique, the A-line skirt is
ideal. When putting flat,
this skirt is normally
knee-length and produc-
es a triangle shape. It’s a
simple to sew solution
that works well with a
variety of fabrics. The
A-line skirt is a beauti-
ful skirt option since it
flares out softly from the
waist and does not cling
to the hips. A-line skirts
are generally fitted at
the waist and as such
need shaping in the
form of darts or a gently
curving waistband.
ASYMMETRICAL SKIRT
The asymmetrical lines
formed by the cloth cut
and the varying levels
of the hems are impor-
tant to the design of this
skirt. Asymmetrical
skirts are cut diagonal-
ly across the body, with
one side being lower
than the other. A high-
low skirt, on the other
hand, has asymmetry in
the front and back.
BOX PLEAT SKIRT
The box pleat skirt is a
variant of the pleated
skirt style. Allowing the
pleat’s two folds to con-
nect and produce the
box component of the
pleat results in a box
pleat. The pleated de-
sign is repeated all the
way around the skirt.
To give the skirt volume
and form, box pleat
skirts are frequently
fashioned of heavier
materials.
BUBBLE SKIRT
The bubble skirt puffs
out at the hem because
the fabric of the hem is
gathered onto a band
instead of a turned up
hem. This band is kept
under the skirt so the
top of the skirt ‘bub-
bles’ over the band.
Bubble skirts tend to be
cut above the knee as
any longer adds a lot of
volume to the skirt.
GATHERED SKIRT
The gathered skirt is a
very straightforward
style to follow. These
types of skirts are gath-
ered onto the waist-
band. The fullness of
the skirt is determined
by the amount of fabric
in the skirt part of the
pattern and the gathers
pulled up to fit onto the
waistband. A gathered
skirt can
be any length
from short to full
length. It is best
in fine to medium
weight fabrics.
PLEATED SKIRT
The pleated effect of
this skirt varies with
the size of the pleats.
Knife pleats that sit
flush with the body
of the skirt are flat-
tering. Pleated
skirts are worn in
different lengths
and with differ-
ent size pleats.
Pleated skirts
are often made in
synthetic fabrics
that can be
permanently
pressed so
the pleats
do not fall
out when
washed.

Students To Stand Up For Soil
tudents at IIT-Kan-

uru on campus for
a special Youth
and Truth session
on Day 80 of the
100-day Save Soil
journey on Thursday. En
route to Jhansi, Sadhguru
met with faculty and stu-
dents at the university in
an interactive QA session
where he spoke about wide-
ranging topics from mental
health to legalizing mari-
juana, the role of the mod-
ern-day educator and more.
In a gripping two-hour ses-
sion, Sadhguru candidly
addressed the students of
IIT-Kanpur drawing atten-
tion to the significance of
pursuing something with
wholehearted dedication
rather than choosing a ca-
reer based on social pre-
scriptions of prestige. Re-
sponding to a question
from the student panel
about mental health, Sadh-
guru joked that though this
will make him unpopular,
whatever experiences are
happening within us are
fundamentally our respon-
sibility. He stressed the im-
portance of seeing this re-
sponsibility to be able to
address such issues and
spoke about the basic long-
ing of every life to reach its
fullest potential. To the age-
old debate about whether
or not marijuana
should be legalized,
Sadhguru quipped that
rather than calling it
‘getting high,’ it should be
called ‘getting low’ because
it lowers one’s perception.
He went on to explain that
he is not against marijuana
but against an inefficient
life. To a question about the
pressures introverts are
faced with to socialize, Sad-
hguru highlighted the im-
portance of maintaining a
flexible personality that
allows one the freedom to
choose how to be as the
situation requires rather
than having a fixed person-
ality that he compares to
being in a straitjacket. Af-
ter a host of intriguing
questions from the au-
dience, Sadhguru
closed the session with
an appeal to the stu-
dents of IIT-Kanpur to
keep their voices raised for
the soil that has nourished
our lives. He insisted on the
need for this to be a lifelong
love affair as an expression
of our concern and respon-
sibility for the life that is
around us and the life that
should be beyond us.

Neutrals, the winsome wardrobe fundamental this season!
SUMMERS IN NEUTRALS
T
rends transition
season after sea-
son, but classics
stay the same.
The cycle of a classic
fashion staple is end-
less and when done
right, leaves an extraor-
dinary impression.
Neutrals are one such
category of classics
without which a win-
somewardrobeisincom-
plete. For fashion un-
versed, Neutrals are the
classification of colours
that are muted with un-
dertonesthatchangecol-
our in different lighting.
While this summer is
all about dressing up in
dopamine boosting col-
ours (blue, orange, red
and green) their muted
counterparts like beige,
taupe, grey, cream,
brown, black, and white
are as evergreen in real
lifeasit’sontherunway
.
In conversation with
CityFirst,Fashionmod-
els share their tips on
how to add neutral col-
ours to their wardrobe.
BEWITCHING BLACK
SHRADDHA DUBEY feels
that black is a colour to reckon
with, even in the summers.
Speaking on the power of black
that according to her dominates
during the summers as well as is
a consistent sight in the winters,
she said, “The power of black is as-
tonishing. It can be played both as
casual chic or bold and bright. Paired
with sequins and studs, black stands
out like the life of a party. Couple
black with white and you have a busi-
ness/formal look ready. While black
pants paired with a white studded
corset is this year's favourite, I think
a black corset dress might be a game-
changer. Black is the talisman of col-
ours and truly an essential accessory
.
Whoever said black is my happy
colour, spoke for millions.
KUSTOM KHAKI BEAUTIFUL BROWN AND BEIGE
J A H N A V I
SHUKLA is a die-
hard fan of neutral
themes during the
summers and enu-
merates the bene-
fits of neutral
shades, “The word
neutral can invoke
the thought of
blandness but it
can also look pol-
ished, elegant, and
casual chic when
done rightly. The
trick to wearing
an all neutral out-
fit is to add a fun
d i m e n s i o n .
Reach for
brown, beige or
black basics to
create a stylish
neutral summer
outfit. Neutrals
have many posi-
tives;
• Everything al-
ways matches,
looking classy
.
• Neutrals are the
foundation of
your wardrobe.
• And you spend
less time
g e t t i n g
ready
.
ANUSHKA KHOTE,who
feels that neutral tones bring
out the best in her feels that
Khaki is one of the best op-
tions for the summers.
“Neutral Tones are my fa-
vourite colour palette when
it comes to personal style.
They bring out the beauty of
skin tones and textures and
look effortlessly sleek and
stylish! I like to style neu-
trals for summer in more
breathable fabrics forming
flowy structures. Khaki is a
beautiful neutral option for
summers. While adding
knee-length skirts, Palazzo
pants, cropped shirts, Maxi
Dress or a sundress would
be some great options for
starters”, she said.
WONDROUS WHITE
SHISHTA MAURYA feels in her heart that the
neutral does not have to be plain and simple and
can be elegantly paired with other colours.
“The charm of black never fades and think all
black with gold jewellery, I mean it’s the perfect
outfit. Neutrals do not have to be plain and sim-
ple. Take it up a notch by pairing colours like
red and pink with white or take an all-black
or all-white look and add colourful accesso-
ries like heels, chains and bags. The Bottega
Veneta line of handheld bags looks great
with a monochrome neutral outfit.”

Irani is scheduled to accompany Neetu to the ISRO headquarters in Bengaluru on Saturday . On May 10, Irani, the Union Women and Child Dev Minister, had visited the Gauriganj assembly seat to inau- gurate a private educa- tional institute near Durgan Bhavani Dham. As she was giving a tab- let to Neetu Maurya, a student of Sanjay Gand- hi Polytechnic, Jagdish- pur, she asked her what she wanted to do next. “I want to go to ISRO and become a scien- tist,” was the student’s reply. Hearing the young girl’s desire, the minister announced that she will personally take her to the ISRO next month. One day Neetu will make Amethi proud, she had said. Neetu’s father Jag Prasad Mau- rya said, “My daughter was elated as she left to visit ISRO. She will study to become a scien- tist at ISRO. M Tariq Khan Lucknow: In Yogi’s UP, expressways maybe scripting a silent trans- formation in a state known for its poor qual- ity of roads but what has come as a shocker is that UP tops the chart in the country for max- imumnumberof deaths in accidents on national highways. The revelation has been made in a ‘Road Safety Campaign, Road Accidents in India 2020’, a study released by the Union ministry of road transport and highways (MoRTH). According to the re- port, In 2020, 3,66,138 road accidents were re- ported by states/UTs, of which, 1,16,496 (31.82%) were on na- tional highways; 47,984 (36.43%) people were killed and 1,09,898 (31.55%) were injured. “The fact that much of the 31.8% of the acci- dents, 36.4% of deaths and 31.6% of acci- dents-related injuries took place on national highways, which share only 2.1% of the total road network in the country, needs atten- tion,” the report stated. “More accidents on the highways have been attributed to higher ve- hicle speeds and higher volume of traffic on these roads.” UP alone, according to the report, accounted for 16.4% of the road accident deaths on national highways in India, fol- lowed by Maharashtra (7.4%) and Karnataka (6.9%); Tamil Nadu re- ported the highest num- ber of accidents on na- tional highways. Tamil Nadu topped the list for the fifth con- secutive year in terms of the number of acci- dents 15,269 (13.1%), fol- lowed by UP with 13,695 (11.1%), Karnataka with 11,230 (9.6%), and MP with 9,866 (9.6%). As a batswoman she has several achievements to her credit and has been admired for her batting skills. Her calling it a day from all forms of interna- tional cricket will leave a void in Indian women’s cricket al- though the new crop of Team India players have the potential they will take time to attain that level of maturity . India has had some great women cricketers. Diana Eduljee, who captained India in 1978 and holds the record for bowling the most number of balls---5098---in women’s test his- tory and Neetu David, the slow left-arm spinner who was the first Indian bowler to take 100 wickets in women’s ODIs, to name just two. They were quality players but what keeps Mithali apart is her batting prowess and competitive attitude on the field. She is the only Indian batswoman to have scored a double century . A here is no limit to which linguistic chauvinists won’t stoop to. Hackles of politicalleaders and those from Kollywood, the South Indian film industry , wereraisedwhenUnionHome Minister Amit Shah batted for HindiasanalternativetoEng- lish in the country . A debate raged over the issue with South Indian states aligned against the suggestion to re- place English with Hindi. It is notthefirsttimethattheSouth has taken a firm stand against Hindi as a national language. The first row started in Tamil Nadu in 1937 when Hindi was proposed to be introduced as a compulsory subject. It is the degeneration of the discourse this time around which is shocking and baf- fling. Ruling DMK’s Rajya SabhaMPTKSElangovansaid thatHindiwasthelanguageof Shudras.“Impositionof Hindi will make us Shudras,” he said.Hethenwentontoblame Hindi for the under-develop- ment of northern states. To identify a language with a caste and economic develop- ment is a case of extreme in- sensitivity . First, like the rest of India Tamil Nadu’s society is as caste-riven as any other in the country . Before the As- sembly elections in 2021 AI- ADMK-BJP and the DMK depended on caste formulas targeting the over 20 percent Scheduled Castes. Linking language to devel- opment is an absolutely bi- zarre logic. If Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka have done well it is not because of Eng- lish but due to successive governments which created the right eco-system for pro- gress. States in north India became laggards because of religion, crime and corrup- tion, lack of proper infra- structure and connectivity . DON’T BLAME HINDI FOR POVERTY It is the degeneration of the discourse this time around which is shocking and baffling. Ruling DMK’s Rajya Sabha MP TKS Elangovan said that Hindi was the language of Shudras. “Imposition of Hindi will make us Shudras,” he said. He then went on to blame Hindi for the under-development of northern states T QUAD - CHINA AND THE PACIFIC On the other hand, Politically and diplomatically, we should ensure continued international pressure at China’s sore thumb like South China Sea, Taiwan and Hong Kong. We need to continue to isolate China on its insidious role in starting the current pandemic and strengthen the Quad and other multilateral regional groupings of like-minded countries. Well, if India achieves all this, it will dominate the Asian continent and will emerge as a world leader he much-publicised recent Tokyo summit 22 of QUAD conference held in the back- drop of Russia - Ukraine con- flict is opening vistas of a new world order aligning US, India, Japan and Australia. Conceptualised by Japan in 2007 It was revived in 2017 with first ministerial level meeting at New York in 2019. According to experts, the main undeclared objective of the formation of QUAD is to rein in the increasing influ- ence of China in the Indo- Pacific region and to develop a strategy to protect trade sea routes free of any control amid China’s growing mili- tary existence in the strate- gic Indo-Pacific region. While the leaders of the four member countries of QUAD seemed pretty sure of achieving their goal, China almost mocked them and saw no reason to worry. Chinese leaders termed it as merely “a headline-grabbing idea”. Beijing believed that all the four leaders were pursuing strategies that were too di- vergent to be coherent. As a military analyst, I be- lieve that Chinese leadership perceived that while America is pressing ‘The America is back Policy’ under Joe Biden for existing and future allies, Australia and Japan are in- terested only in keeping the sea trade routes open without third parties political and/or Military interference. And, Indian vision is to neutralize, contain and counter Chinese intrusions and dominance in the sub-continent. Before we dwell further, let us have a look at this region. Theregionconsistsof 14coun- tries: Australia, Bangladesh, Burma, India, Indonesia, Ja- pan, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thai- land and Vietnam. The region has main sea trade routes and therefore, an engine of the global economy and that is why the clash of TITANS. China has been opposed to QUAD Since its very incep- tion and sees it as a strategy to prevent its global rise and interests. Often, China has termed QUAD as Asian NATO. And since the dilution of NATO during Ukraine war, China is seemingly clear that QUAD will also disinte- grate when tested under eco- nomic and resources pres- sures on member countries. So, is it that QUAD is shrouded in fears of an obso- lete Cold War perceptions of yester years and a military confrontation in Ukraine of current times? May be. Since a joint statement by QUAD countries about ‘spirit of the QUAD’ is issued, Bei- jing is advocating the need for openness, inclusiveness and a win-win situation in the region and international systems. It is further advis- ing to refrain from forming “cliques like NATO & QUAD. Though, it refuses to accept the same principles when it comes to south China sea. Therefore, to deal with the challenges posed, China is considering a double prong pincer assault by forming an institutionalize if not milita- rize concept of a “Himalayan Quad”—comprising China, Nepal, Pakistan, and Afghan- istan as a rival group, which obviously will be no match to QUAD but may suit the Chi- nese design of rising to pow- er with smaller groups, neighbourhood politics, and weaker countries that could be a part and parcel of China shaping a stronger world- view across the region. And secondly work on a ‘Debt Trap’ diplomacy on nu- meroussmallislandcountries in the Pacific region like Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu and the Solomon. India amidst these testing times has a crucial role to play. INDIA LUCKNOW | FRIDAY, JUNE 10, 2022 05 www.firstindia.co.in I www.firstindia.co.in/epapers/lucknow I twitter.com/thefirstindia I facebook.com/thefirstindia I instagram.com/thefirstindia First India Bureau Lucknow: In the poli- tics of India, any leader is established as a lead- er of a particular caste only when he or she can provide votes of his caste to the candidate of other caste instead of himself or the candi- date of his own caste. Samajwadi Party Na- tional President Akh- ilesh Yadav contested from Azamgarh seat in the 2019 Lok Sabha elec- tions. He got more than 60 percent of the votes in this Muslim and Yadav- dominated seat. The BJP had also fielded a Yadav candidate, but it got half of the votes polled by Akhilesh. Whatever votes the Ya- davs had in Azamgarh, almost one hundred percent of the votes went to Akhilesh. But this does not establish Akhilesh as the leader of the Yadavs. It is not a big deal for him or any other Yadav candidate of his party to get Yadav votes. The true test of his ‘political might’ will be tested this time since he has fielded a non-Yadav candidate from Azam- garh seat. Akhilesh has given ticket to Dalit leader Su- shil Anand for the Azamgarh seat that fell vacant due to his resig- nation. Sushil Anand is the son of Balihari Babu, a prominent Dalit leader who was one of the founders of BAM- CEF. Balihari Babu has been in BSP for a long time. Akhilesh has played undertaken a huge risk by giving tick- et to his son. Keep in mind that in the last as- sembly elections, the BSP had helped the BJP by letting its core Dalit vote go to the BJP. This time Akhilesh has giv- en ticket to a strong Dalit leader who re- mained in his party, to counter the BJP’s strat- egy. It will be interest- ing to see whether the Dalits of Azamgarh vote for the candidate of their own caste or do they vote for the Mus- lim candidate of BSP on Mayawati’s appeal? On the other hand, BJP has once again made Dinesh Lal Yadav Nirhua, who contested the elections last time, as its candidate. He is a big star of Bhojpuri films. But could not stand in front of Akh- ilesh. So, this time Akh- ilesh’s test is whether he can prepare the Ya- davs of Azamgarh to vote for the Dalit candi- date of SP over the Ya- dav candidate of BJP. On the other hand, Mayawati’s test is whether she is able to prepare Dalits to vote for the Muslim candi- date of BSP over the Dalit candidate of SP. The outcome of this one seat will decide a the po- litical ‘swings’ in the coming time. Will Akhilesh and Mayawati prove their ‘salt’ in Azamgarh bypoll? GAME OF POLITICAL MIGHT Owaisi, Narasimhananda named inFIRover inflammatory remarks Nupur Sharma and Naveen Jindal are also among people named in FIRs New Delhi: The Delhi Police on Thursday said that All India Majlis-e- Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asadud- din Owaisi and contro- versial priest Yati Nars- inghanand are named in one of the two first information reports (FIR) registered by its special cell the previous day against various people for allegedly spreading hate and hurting religious senti- ments. Owaisi and Yati Nars- inghanand have been booked for their alleged inflammatory remarks on social media, the po- lice said Thursday . Former Delhi BJP mediaunitheadNaveen Jindal, who was ex- pelled from the party, and former party spokesperson Nupur Sharma, who was sus- pended, are among the people named in the FIRs. Deputy commission- er of police (cyber cell) KPS Malhotra said that the police on Wednes- day registered a case against social media us- ers for spreading hate, inciting groups and dis- turbing public tranquil- lity . “The FIR is against multiple individuals from different religions. HC issues notices to CBI, govt & Subodh Jaiswal over petition New Delhi: The Bom- bay High Court on Thursday issued notic- es to the Central Bureau of Investigation, the Union government and IPS officer Subodh Ku- mar Jaiswal following a plea challenging the lat- ter’s appointment as the CBI director. A bench of Chief Jus- tice Dipankar Datta and Justice MS Karnik di- rected the respondent agencies and Jaiswal to file their replies to the plea by July 18. The bench was hear- ing a plea filed by Ra- jendra Trivedi, former ACP of the Maharash- tra Police. On Thursday, Trive- di’s advocate SB Tale- kar also submitted an affidavit, stating that a private complaint of defamation was filed against Jaiswal in 2012 and a magistrate’s court in the city had taken its cognisance and issued a process against him. The matter was pend- ing hearing, Advocate Talekar said. The HC took the affi- davit on record. It will hear the matter further on July 28. Jaiswal, who had ear- lier held the post of Ma- harashtra’s Director General of Police (DGP), was appointed as the CBI director in May last year. In his plea, filed through Advocate Tale- kar, Trivedi has sought that Jaiswal’s appoint- ment as the CBI direc- tor be quashed. Trivedi in his plea claimed Jaiswal’s ap- pointment was in con- travention of the Delhi Police Establishment Act, and sought that the high court call for the records and proceed- ings of the three-mem- ber committee that had approved Jaiswal’s can- didature. The Mahan Dal of Kes- hav Dev Maurya has announced to snap ties with the SP-led alliance. At the same time, the displeasure of PSPL Chief Shivpal Singh Ya- dav and SBSP Chief Omprakash Rajbhar is increasing gradually . Notably, late last year Akhilesh Yadav entered into a tie-up with seven parties -- the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD), Mahan Dal, Janwadi Party (So- cialist), Apna Dal fac- tion led by Krishna Pa- tel, Suheldev Bhartiya Samaj Party (SBSP), Shivpal Yadav’s Pragatisheel Samajwa- di Party (PSPL) and Gondwana Gantantra Party. This coalition based on caste calcula- tion proved unsuccess- ful in achieving elector- al victory, since then the signs of disintegra- tion started reflecting in this alliance. The dis- satisfaction of the Jan- wadi Party leader San- jay Chauhan during the ticket distribution had exposed the weaknesses of the alliance. Post-as- sembly election results, Mahan Dal Chief Kes- hav Dev Maurya started making scathing state- ments targeting BJP turncoat Swami Prasad Maurya. Keshav Dev was upset that he was not given adequate seats and his party was ignored in comparison to other allies. Akhilesh’s estranged uncle and PSPL chief Shivpal Yadav has blamed the SP’s organi- zational structure for the poll debacle. On sev- eral occasions, he has indicated to leave the alliance and choose a different path. In fact, the row erupted in the coalition camp after Akhilesh Yadav’s deci- sion to quit the post of MP and retain the post of Karhal MLA. Azam Khan and Shivpal Ya- dav, who were eyeing the post of Leader of Opposition, were quite dissatisfied with this decision. Although Azam ’s displeasure has faded since his supporters were adjusted in the Ra- jya Sabha, Lok Sabha by-elections and MLC elections, Shivpal Singh Yadav’s anger remains intact. First India Bureau Lucknow: Even as a row has erupted in the UP Congress over its decision not to contest Lok Sabha byelections in Rampur and Azamgarh, the party leader Nawab Kazim Ali Khanof Rampurhasan- nounced to support the BJP candidate Ghan- shyam Lodhi. The Congress deci- sion of staying away from byelection has trig- gered a war of words among the state leaders questioning leadership move. In Rampur, how- ever, a piquant situation has developed with the announcement of Kaz- im Ali Khan who had sought permission from the high command to join the fray . While Khan, who had lost assembly election against Azam Khan in Rampur, his son Haider Ali Khan, who was Apna Dal-BJP allies candidate from Swar against Azam Khan’s son Abdullah Azam. But he was defeated. The decision to support BJP’s Lodhi was an- nounced after a meet- ing between the two at Noor Mahal. Kazim Ali said there was no ques- tion of supporting SP’s Asim Raja a close confi- dent of Azam Khan. Kazim Ali said “the Congressleadershiphas been misinformed and got wrong feedback of the ground situation from those with vested political and financial interests. All I have been saying is that Congress is a bigger party at the national level, while Sa- majwadi Party has only three MPs. The Con- gress should have con- tested bypoll”. However, theUPCCvicepresident (incharge administra- tion) Yogesh Dixit there was nothing much to comment on the issue at the moment. He said the party’s disciplinary de- partment was looking into the matter and a decision would be taken soon. Ballia (PTI): Uttar Pradesh Transport Min- isterDayashankarSingh on Thursday extended an open invitation to Suheldev Bharatiya Sa- maj Party (SBSP) presi- dent Om Prakash Ra- jbhar, who is ostensibly unhappy with his ally Samajwadi Party after being sidelined in the coming Legislative Councilelections, tojoin hands with the BJP . Interacting with re- porters on the sidelines of a government pro- gramme at the district headquarters here, SinghsaidtheSPdidnot keepitspromisemadeto theSBSPandtheMahan Dal and added, “We are ready to welcome the parties coming out of the SP alliance. They will be welcomed and greeted.” He said the ideologies of the SBSP and the Ma- han Dal were similar to that of the BJP and add- ed Rajbhar “talks about the rights of the down- trodden and PM Naren- dra Modi and CM Yogi Adityanath fulfil them”. The BJP leader also said whoever had en- tered into an alliance with the BJP became a minister.“ ApnaDallead- er Anupriya Patel is a minister in the central government and her husband Ashish Patel is a minister in Yogi gov- ernment. Rajbhar was also a minister during his party’s alliance with the BJP ,” he said. Sharing a video of Surjewala, BJP national spokesperson Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore asked, “Why the Congress hates Hindus so much.” “Rahul Gandhi, who does election tours from temple to temple, is irritated by a sacred word like Hindutva. His party keeps insulting Lord Ram. Today again, the Congress has hurt the faith of Hindus by making indecent remarks on Mata Sita,” tweeted Rathore, who is the Jaipur (Rural) MP. • 12. kirts aren’t given enough credit. Trou- sers and jeans, as well as skirts and even shorts, are frequently dis- cussed. But what about skirts? No. They’re rel- egated to the bottom of the fashion food chain, where they’re worn regularly but seldom highlighted. We believe it is critical that we ex- plore the often-over- looked silhouette and begin to give it the at- tention it deserves. A-LINE SKIRT Forthepear-shapedphy- sique, the A-line skirt is ideal. When putting flat, this skirt is normally knee-length and produc- es a triangle shape. It’s a simple to sew solution that works well with a variety of fabrics. The A-line skirt is a beauti- ful skirt option since it flares out softly from the waist and does not cling to the hips. A-line skirts are generally fitted at the waist and as such need shaping in the form of darts or a gently curving waistband. ASYMMETRICAL SKIRT The asymmetrical lines formed by the cloth cut and the varying levels of the hems are impor- tant to the design of this skirt. Asymmetrical skirts are cut diagonal- ly across the body, with one side being lower than the other. A high- low skirt, on the other hand, has asymmetry in the front and back. BOX PLEAT SKIRT The box pleat skirt is a variant of the pleated skirt style. Allowing the pleat’s two folds to con- nect and produce the box component of the pleat results in a box pleat. The pleated de- sign is repeated all the way around the skirt. To give the skirt volume and form, box pleat skirts are frequently fashioned of heavier materials. BUBBLE SKIRT The bubble skirt puffs out at the hem because the fabric of the hem is gathered onto a band instead of a turned up hem. This band is kept under the skirt so the top of the skirt ‘bub- bles’ over the band. Bubble skirts tend to be cut above the knee as any longer adds a lot of volume to the skirt. GATHERED SKIRT The gathered skirt is a very straightforward style to follow. These types of skirts are gath- ered onto the waist- band. The fullness of the skirt is determined by the amount of fabric in the skirt part of the pattern and the gathers pulled up to fit onto the waistband. A gathered skirt can be any length from short to full length. It is best in fine to medium weight fabrics. PLEATED SKIRT The pleated effect of this skirt varies with the size of the pleats. Knife pleats that sit flush with the body of the skirt are flat- tering. Pleated skirts are worn in different lengths and with differ- ent size pleats. Pleated skirts are often made in synthetic fabrics that can be permanently pressed so the pleats do not fall out when washed. En route to Jhansi, Sadhguru met with faculty and stu- dents at the university in an interactive QA session where he spoke about wide- ranging topics from mental health to legalizing mari- juana, the role of the mod- ern-day educator and more. In a gripping two-hour ses- sion, Sadhguru candidly addressed the students of IIT-Kanpur drawing atten- tion to the significance of pursuing something with wholehearted dedication rather than choosing a ca- reer based on social pre- scriptions of prestige. Re- sponding to a question from the student panel about mental health, Sadh- guru joked that though this will make him unpopular, whatever experiences are happening within us are fundamentally our respon- sibility. He stressed the im- portance of seeing this re- sponsibility to be able to address such issues and spoke about the basic long- ing of every life to reach its fullest potential. To the age- old debate about whether or not marijuana should be legalized, Sadhguru quipped that rather than calling it ‘getting high,’ it should be called ‘getting low’ because it lowers one’s perception. He went on to explain that he is not against marijuana but against an inefficient life. To a question about the pressures introverts are faced with to socialize, Sad- hguru highlighted the im- portance of maintaining a flexible personality that allows one the freedom to choose how to be as the situation requires rather than having a fixed person- ality that he compares to being in a straitjacket. Af- ter a host of intriguing questions from the au- dience, Sadhguru closed the session with an appeal to the stu- dents of IIT-Kanpur to keep their voices raised for the soil that has nourished our lives. He insisted on the need for this to be a lifelong love affair as an expression of our concern and respon- sibility for the life that is around us and the life that should be beyond us. SUMMERS IN NEUTRALS T rends transition season after sea- son, but classics stay the same. The cycle of a classic fashion staple is end- less and when done right, leaves an extraor- dinary impression. Neutrals are one such category of classics without which a win- somewardrobeisincom- plete. For fashion un- versed, Neutrals are the classification of colours that are muted with un- dertonesthatchangecol- our in different lighting. While this summer is all about dressing up in dopamine boosting col- ours (blue, orange, red and green) their muted counterparts like beige, taupe, grey, cream, brown, black, and white are as evergreen in real lifeasit’sontherunway . In conversation with CityFirst,Fashionmod- els share their tips on how to add neutral col- ours to their wardrobe. BEWITCHING BLACK SHRADDHA DUBEY feels that black is a colour to reckon with, even in the summers. Speaking on the power of black that according to her dominates during the summers as well as is a consistent sight in the winters, she said, “The power of black is as- tonishing. It can be played both as casual chic or bold and bright. Paired with sequins and studs, black stands out like the life of a party. Couple black with white and you have a busi- ness/formal look ready. While black pants paired with a white studded corset is this year's favourite, I think a black corset dress might be a game- changer. Black is the talisman of col- ours and truly an essential accessory . Whoever said black is my happy colour, spoke for millions. KUSTOM KHAKI BEAUTIFUL BROWN AND BEIGE J A H N A V I SHUKLA is a die- hard fan of neutral themes during the summers and enu- merates the bene- fits of neutral shades, “The word neutral can invoke the thought of blandness but it can also look pol- ished, elegant, and casual chic when done rightly. The trick to wearing an all neutral out- fit is to add a fun d i m e n s i o n . Reach for brown, beige or black basics to create a stylish neutral summer outfit. Neutrals have many posi- tives; • Everything al- ways matches, looking classy . • Neutrals are the foundation of your wardrobe. • And you spend less time g e t t i n g ready . ANUSHKA KHOTE,who feels that neutral tones bring out the best in her feels that Khaki is one of the best op- tions for the summers. “Neutral Tones are my fa- vourite colour palette when it comes to personal style. They bring out the beauty of skin tones and textures and look effortlessly sleek and stylish! I like to style neu- trals for summer in more breathable fabrics forming flowy structures. Khaki is a beautiful neutral option for summers. While adding knee-length skirts, Palazzo pants, cropped shirts, Maxi Dress or a sundress would be some great options for starters”, she said. WONDROUS WHITE SHISHTA MAURYA feels in her heart that the neutral does not have to be plain and simple and can be elegantly paired with other colours. “The charm of black never fades and think all black with gold jewellery, I mean it’s the perfect outfit. Neutrals do not have to be plain and sim- ple. Take it up a notch by pairing colours like red and pink with white or take an all-black or all-white look and add colourful accesso- ries like heels, chains and bags. The Bottega Veneta line of handheld bags looks great with a monochrome neutral outfit.” HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! The birthday of IAS Vikramaditya Singh Malik was on Thursday, June 9.
