BJP trying to commit
fraud: Akhilesh Yadav
Lucknow: The BJP is
attempting fraud as
the SP-led alliance is
going to win the Uttar
Pradesh Assembly
elec- tions, Samajwadi
Party chief
Akhilesh
Yadav
said on
Wednes-
day, exhorting party
workers to foil the
ruling party’s con-
spiracies. “Treat the
counting centres as the
pilgrimage of democ-
racy. Go there and
stand firm,” Yadav said
in a tweet. “Foil every
conspiracy by the rul-
ing party to manipulate
the election results, he
said. “The SP alliance is
winning, that is why the
BJP is trying to commit
fraud,” Yadav added.
BJP demands EC action against Akhilesh for ‘false charges’
‘TRYING TO INCITE ANTI-SOCIAL ELEMENTS’
New Delhi(PTI): The
BJP on Wednesday peti-
tionedtheElectionCom-
mission demanding ac-
tion against Samajwadi
Party president Akhile-
sh Yadav for allegedly
trying to “incite anti-so-
cial elements” over the
electoral process.
A BJP delegation sub-
mitted a memorandum
to Chief Election Com-
missioner Sushil Chan-
dra, claiming that Ya-
dav, through a press
conference on Tuesday,
had “attempted to
spread disaffection and
levelled brazen, unsub-
stantiated, frivolous and
false charges against
the Election Commis-
sion and its officials”.
“Should such leaders
even be allowed to par-
ticipate in the elections,
the ultimate celebra-
tion of democracy? The
commission must take
a view on the matter,”
the BJP leaders said in
the memorandum to the
Commission.
Senior BJP leaders
including Dharmendra
Pradhan, who is the
BJP’s election in-charge
for UP
, and Mukhtar Ab-
bas Naqvi, G Kishan
Reddy and Om Pathak
requested the Commis-
sion to ensure that the
counting process, its
venues and the areas
around it are fully pro-
tected. At a press confer-
ence in Lucknow on
Tuesday, Yadav had al-
leged that senior gov-
ernment officials in the
state capital were di-
recting their subordi-
nates in the districts to
slow down the counting
of votes and prolong the
process till late night
where the chances of
the BJP candidates win-
ning were slim.
“Spreading lies and
inciting citizens is a se-
rious and grave offence
and Akhilesh Yadav
and his cohorts must be
held accountable and
be charged under rel-
evant provisions
of Election code
and Indian Penal
Code,” the BJP
leaders said.

returning in Ut-

BJP sweep in Manipur
— as the exit polls put
out their predictions, all
eyes are set on tomor-
row’s results as the As-
sembly elections in the
five states draw to a
close.
In Uttar Pradesh,
most pollsters, barring
two forecasts that the
ruling BJP may suffer
losses, predict them
crossing the half-way
mark of 202 comfortably
and retaining power,
bucking a trend of near-
ly four decades. The
state has not returned a
government to power
since 1985. The SP-RLD
alliance, which waged a
spirited campaign, may
make major gains as
compared to 2017 but is
likely to fall well short
of the magic figure. The
Congress, the polls pre-
dicted, would remain in
single digits.
In Punjab, most pre-
dictions see an AAP
win, with the party be-
ing comfortably ahead
of the ruling Congress
and the Akali Dal-BSP
combine. If the AAP
manages to win Punjab,
the outcome has the po-
tential to trigger a
churning in Indian poli-
tics, especially in the
Opposition space as no
other party barring the
BJP and the Congress
are in power in more
than one state now.
Political parties in
both Uttarakhand and
Goa are preparing for
post-poll scenarios —
lining up resorts and
rushing senior leaders
to handle the situation.
While in Goa, the Con-
gress election candi-

convened at a hotel in
Bambolim, the party
was also considering
the same in Uttara-
khand. Meanwhile, sit-
ting BJP Goa CM

Lucknow: A day after Samajwadi Party alleged
EVM fraud in Varanasi, the Election Commission
ordered the removal of the nodal officer for EVMs in
Varanasi, ADM Nalini Kant Singh. Also, the Election
Commission has deputed two special officers, Chief
Electoral Officer (CEO) Bihar HR Srinivas to Varanasi

Samajwadi Party has demanded that Election Com-

parties which contested the election, apart from the
ECI. Citing the live webcast of election in at least
more than 50 per of election centres, SP said in a
letter that the counting also should be webcast to
ensure that it is “efficient, independent and free”.

‘Only India bringing citizens back from Ukraine’
YOGIMEETSSTUDENTSFROMGORAKHPURWHORETURNEDFROMUKRAINE,
SAYSSTUDENTSFROMOTHERCOUNTRIESWERELEFTONTHEIROWN
Lucknow( PTI): Uttar
Pradesh Chief Minis-
ter Yogi Adityanath on
Wednesday met stu-
dents from Gorakha-
pur who returned from
Ukraine, and claimed
that only India was tak-
ing action to bring back
its citizens from the
war-torn country
.
The Ukrainian air-
space has been shut
since February 24 due
to the Russian military
offensive. The Indian
citizens stuck in
Ukraine are being air-
lifted once they cross to
neighbouring coun-
tries such as Romania,
Hungary, Slovakia and
Poland.
The chief minister
claimed that students
from other countries
were left on their own
while “only India has
ensured the safe return
of their residents.”
“This facility (of bring-
ing back home) was
available only to Indian
citizens and students.
You must have seen
that students from oth-
er countries studying
with you were left on
their own at the mercy
of God. Their govern-
ments did not take any
cognizance of bringing
them back,” he said.
Adityanath said,
“Because of Prime
Minister Narendra Mo-
di’s good relations with
Romania, Hungary and
Poland, no problem has
arisen anywhere. The
facilities which the cit-
izens of India were get-
ting at the borders of
these countries, people
from other nations
were not getting them,”
the CM said.
The chief minister
said as soon as Russia
attacked Ukraine, PM
Modi held a meeting to
bring back its citizens
safely to India.
“The Uttar Pradesh
government also col-
lected information
about all the people of
the state studying in
Ukraine by deploying
nodal officers. PM
Modi himself took in-
terest and sent four
Union ministers to
bring them back to In-
dia. It expresses the
sentiments of the gov-
ernment,” he said.
Nothing can be said
about how many days
will the war last but the
students who have re-
turned from Ukraine
should continue to pre-
pare for their courses
here, the CM said.
CM Yogi with students who returned from Ukraine at his official residence.
The CM said that a total of 2,290 students from UP
were living and studying in Ukraine. He said, “2078
of them have been brought back. All arrangements are
being made to bring back those who are left. Out of 74
students from Gorakhpur, 70 have been brought back.
Remaining four are also being brought back,” he said.
2078 OF 2290 STUDENTS RESCUED
The government is also concerned
about your (the students who belong
to Uttar Pradesh and were studying
in Ukraine). The government here is think-
ing about it.

4 BEEGHA LAND ON BET OVER BJP WINS OR SP
Janardan Mishra
Lucknow: While the
result for the UP As-
semby polls will be an-
nounced today, there
are some interesting
cases of bets being
placed on the outcomes.
Placing bets verbally
is common, but there
are some who have en-
tered into written con-
tracts to make sure
that they win.
Recently, a bet of four
beegha land was report-
edly placed in Viriyad-
nandi village of Shekh-
upur assembly where a
Panchayat was going
on. Talks took a politi-
cal twist and two fac-
tions were reportedly
arguing over SP and
BJP’s win in the state.
The matter related to
the political issue soon
escalated to a level that
one Sher Ali who
claimed that the SP will
form a government
pledged his four bee-
gha land to Udayveer
Singh for a period of
one year who sided BJP
and vice versa if BJP
forms a government.
The agreement was
signed on paper and
many villagers signed
the paper as witnesses
to the agreement. The
photograph of the
agreement soon went
viral on social media.
Earlier, a contract
signed on a Rs 10 stamp
paper went viral over
the social media cir-
cles, which stated that
one Iqbal would pay Rs
18000 to Amit Baisal if
BJP’s Nandkishor Gur-
jar wins the the elec-
tions from Loni. Amit
Baisal will owe the
same amount to Iqbal
if Rashtriya Lok Dal’s
Madan Bhaiya wins
the polls.
Bets are being placed on the win of their favourite candidate with
regards to the results of the UP polls, which will be announced today.
First India Bureau
Azamgarh: The UP
exit polls have been
unanimous in their
conclusion of a majori-
ty for the incumbent
BJP – and by extension,
CM Yogi Adityanath –
but vastly divided in
their seat-projection;
one pollster even pre-
dicted an upper limit of
326 for the saffron party
and its allies.
The UP campaign, de-
spite the multi-pronged
contest in the state, had
two clear themes. The
ruling BJP sought a re-
newed mandate by fero-
cious avowals of jingo-
istic nationalism, fur-
ther othering of the
Muslim minority and
by raising the bogey of
a global crisis (a la
Ukraine) that India can
withstand only as long
as Narendra Modi re-
mains prime minister.
The party’s continuing
effort to further fortify
its Hindutva-identity,
one that subsumes all
caste identities, while
simultaneously creat-
ing a caste and religion
neutral electoral bloc of
‘laabharthis’ who must
repay the government
in votes .
There was much that
gave hope to the opposi-
tion, especially to Akh-
ilesh Yadav who was
clearly viewed as lead-
ing the best formation
that could oust the BJP.
It is this public anger
that political stalwarts
such as Swami Prasad
Maurya and Dara Singh
Chauhan, with their
reputation of being
electoral weathervanes,
sensed when they chose
to dump BJP and defect
to SP
, along with several
MLAs loyal to them.
The BJP maintained
that none of these is-
sues would stop it from
crossing the majority
mark.
For Akhilesh, who
woke up rather late in
the day but quickly
built a formidable coali-
tion and ran a visibly
popular campaign, a
loss would almost cer-
tainly lead to another
churn within the SP
that had, in 2017, been
witness to an ugly and
embarrassing feud
within its founding
family. A loss would
also threaten the sus-
tainability of the social
engineering he had
tried to achieve in this
election by compromis-
ing his core Muslim-Ya-
dav vote bank to add to
it other non-Yadav
backward castes and
non-Jatav Dalits.
The Congress was nev-
er tipped to win UP but
it was hopeful of a fair
increase in its dwin-
dling vote share in the
state because of the
massive crowds that
turned up for Priyanka
Gandhi’s campaign.
Gandhi aspires to
change UP’s political
discourse with her
‘Ladki Hoon Lad Sakti
Hoon’ plank, out-of-the-
box candidate selection
strategy and issue-ori-
ented politics.
For BSP Supremo
Mayawati, a failure to
hold on to her Dalit vote
bank in Uttar Pradesh
– especially if her cap-
tive bloc of Jatav votes
also splits – would make
her even more political-
ly vulnerable than she
has already begun to
appear.

“Their (Akhilesh Ya-
dav) allegations are
baseless. They have ac-
cepted their defeat that
is why they are blaming
EVMs,” said Sharma.
Further launching an
attack on Akhilesh Ya-
dav, the BJP leader said
that the SP government
had served the interests
only of particular
castes.
“People had rejected
him in the 2017 elec-
tions. His government
was limited for the ben-
efit of certain families
and castes,” he said.
Confident about the
BJP’s victory, Sharma
said, “We have travelled

view the works done by
our departments.”
“Because of our hard
work people will elect
us again and we will
form the government,”
he added.

First India Bureau
Lucknow: A row has
erupted over the protec-
tion of EVMs used in
polling in the seven
phases of polling from
February 10 to March 7.
Reacting to SP’s accu-
sation of hacking of
EVMs former Secretary
to Government of India
Vijay Shankar Pandey
said EVMs have over
the years vastly im-
proved the electoral
process with transpar-
ency, and those oppos-
ing it have been mis-
leading people by false
assertion that EVMs
could be hacked by
Bluetooth or Wi-fi.
Pandey said demon-
stration in the past by
some people to rig the
EVMs has no validity as
time and again the EC
invited stakeholders to
effectively demonstrate
its functioning.
Pandey said Voters
Verified Audit Trail
Machines (VVPATs)
and the latest M3 model
system appears to have
further improved. He
said EVMs despite
some functional prob-
lems had vastly im-
proved the electoral
system.
Pandey said there
have been reports of
malfunctioning of large
number of machines
during the elections
and it is binding on the
EC to do more to clear
the apprehensions of
stakeholders about the
production, security
and allotment of ma-
chines. He said even
though problem of mal-
functioning required to
be set right urgently the
EVM model cannot be
termed as flawed. These
machines have saved
the election process
from decades of looting
and stashing of ballot
papers into ballot boxes
at polling stations by
hooligans. He said the
commission’s electoral
efficiency should not
come at the cost of cred-
ibility
.
Though EVMs are
stored in strong rooms
in various districts for
the last one month in
western UP, the SP
workers created ruckus
when they spotted a
truck carrying some
machines in Varanasi.
SP president Akhilesh
Yadav attacked BJP ac-
cusing it of “stealing
votes by manipulating
EVMs”. However, the
BJP strongly rebutted
the charge.
Lucknow (PTI): Count-
ing of votes polled in the
Assembly elections will
take place today
, in all
the 75 districts of the
state, starting at 8 am.
“The postal ballots
will be counted first,
and then the votes
polled in the EVMs will
be counted,” a senior
election official said.
The official said,
“Covid protocols, in-
cluding the use of hand
gloves, sanitisers,
masks, thermal scan-
ners and adhering to
socialdistancingnorms,
will be followed at the
counting centres.”
“The votes cast
through postal ballots,
including those by peo-
ple with disabilities and
senior citizens above 80
years, will be counted
manually
, while the
votes of the service vot-
ers --- ETPBS (Electroni-

done online,” he said
Apart from this,

adding media centres
have also been set up.

tral police forces, PAC

tal 250 companies of
CAPFs (Central Armed
Police Forces) have been
provided to all the dis-

ates, the police said.
Lucknow(ANI): A
day after former
chief minister Akh-
ilesh Yadav alleged
“tampering with
electronic voting ma-
chines”, Samajwadi
Party (SP) wrote a
letter to the Election
Commission and de-
manded the webcast-
ing of the counting
process in all constit-
uencies of Uttar
Pradesh to ensure
“efficient, indepen-
dent and free of par-
tisanship” counting.
In a letter to the
Chief Election Com-
missioner, the Akh-
ilesh Yadav-led party
has requested the
poll body to send the
link of the webcast
to all political par-
ties, apart from the
Election Commis-
sioner of India and
the other key elec-
tion officials, so that
it can be watched
live. This develop-
ment comes after Sa-
majwadi Party chief
Akhilesh Yadav al-
leged “tampering
with electronic vot-
ing machines” say-
ing BJP was scared
as his party was win-
ning Ayodhya. He
urged the Election
Commission to look
into the issue.
“Samajwadi Party
is winning Ayodhya
that is why BJP is
scared. Election
Commission officials
tampering with
EVMs,” he claimed
at a press conference
here. Yadav also al-
leged that EVMs had
been transported in
Varanasi without in-
formation to local
candidates.
However, the Chief
Electoral Officer, UP
said those EVMs
were marked for
training.
Lucknow/Varanasi/

officials were removed
from election duty in Ut-
tar Pradesh on Wednes-
day
, a day after the Sam-
ajwadi Party alleged
EVMs were being shift-
ed in an unauthorised
manner.

hen Narendra Modi took
over the reins of Gujarat
for the second consecutive
time, he realised that the
state cannot develop with-
out investment. This un-
derlined the basis for con-
ceptualising a mega invest-
ment meet for Gujarat - Vi-
brant Investment Global
Gujarat Summit - which is
still being organised every
two years to attract invest-
ment from across the globe.
The summit which started
in 2003 grew in size and
scale every year and invest-
ment poured in from across
the sectors to prove Guja-
rat as a safe haven for busi-
ness and industries devel-
opment. While the state
started getting attention of
corporates and industrial-
ists, a visionary Modi
trained his guns for achiev-
ing all-round development
of the state in a mission
mode. Modi’s balanced ap-
proach towards welfare
was being praised by one
and all. His initiatives to
improve the living stand-
ard of citizens is now being
hailed as Gujarat model of
development across the
globe. It has become a topic
to research how an under-
developed state improved
on almost all the parame-
ters of human index with-
in a short span of time.
Modi’s key to develop-
ment was to nurture skills
of people and create em-
ployment opportunities for
them. For this, he promot-
ed vocational courses,
launched schemes for edu-
cating poor people. He fo-
cused on providing a qual-
ity life to a common Guja-
rat by launching pro-
grammes like Pehle
shauchalay aur phir Deva-
lay
. These programmes cre-
ated awareness about
cleanliness, hygiene and
importance of health
among people. His scheme
Gram Jyoti Yojana aimed
at 24X7 power supply to
every household not only
electrified the entire rural
Gujarat but also ignited
minds of people. These
schemes laid the founda-
tion of a prosperous state.
“24X7 power supply for
every household was start-
ed in Gujarat when no one
in the country could even
think of such thing. It’s the
vision of Modi ji which
has made this happen,”
said R Balashankar, a
senior journalist.
The focus was also
on increasing the crop
yield in agriculture.
Modi launched agri-
culture carnivals and
several farm schemes
to increase the pro-
ductivity and income
of farmers. He intro-
duced soil health card
to evaluate the nature
and fertility of soil so
that farmers may use
fertilisers and ma-
nures as per the re-
quirement.
“When there is
change in farming, change
in agriculture, then there
is eminent change in sys-
tem,” Modi had then an-
nounced.
Modi focused on basics.
He improved the health-
care system, agriculture
set up and took innovative
initiatives to increase ru-
ral income. He brought ur-
ban facilities to villages by
overhauling the govern-
ment hospitals and in-
creasing the number of
medical colleges.
“NarendraModihadsaid,
if countryneedstobeshown
direction, only Gujaratis
can guide. Even if it takes
expense to generate power
from solar rays….the land
of our Kutch is so vast that
we can supply solar power
to entire country from
here,” said Saurabh Patel,
former minister of Gujarat.
With his all-round initi-
atives, Gujarat got Asia’s
largest solar plant, the
world’s largest canal net-
work and the country’s
first riverfront.
“When the project of Sa-
barmatiriverfrontwascom-
pleted, thousands of poor
peoplelivinginslumsonthe
either side of the river got
permanent housing. He
showed the best utilisation
of space worth 2 square km
on either side of the river
bank. That showed us how
problemsof commonpeople
can be dealt with and how
they can lead a meaningful
life,” reminisced Bimal Pa-
tel, an architect.
Modi’s tenure as chief
minister is punctuated
with several live trans-
forming achievements in-
cluding setting up of the
world’s highest statue -
Statue of Unity, lifting the
water table by construct-
ing millions of check dams
and bringing Narmada
water to dry and arid re-
gions of Kutch and Sau-
rashtra among several
other initiatives which
have become examples for
not only governments in
the country but also for
global organisations.
Modi’s unique heart
touching initiatives have
made the famous Gujarat
Model of development,
which also comprises
modernisation of police
system,internetconnec-
tions at panchayat level
and handling of all the
public complaints on-
line in a transparent
manner. This not only
reduced corruption in
the state system but also
improved efficiency and
efficacy of government
schemes. Modi started
marching ahead on the is-
sue of development leaving
behind the age-old politics
of vote bank. But the road
to development was not
easy
. Modi was to face im-
pediments on his way
.
The challenge for Modi
came in form of Sardar Sa-
rovar dam which had been
a bone of contention for
years between centre, state
and NGOs. The centre
didn’t want to increase the
heightof thedamwhileGu-
jarat government wanted a

2006,permissionwasgrant-

again in 2006, then water
resources minister Saifud-
din Soz called a meeting to
reconsider the decision of
raising the height of the
dam. Modi, then Gujarat
CM, sat on a hunger-strike
in Ahmedabad for 52 hours
starting that April 17, alleg-
ing that the Centre was do-
ing Gujarat an injustice.
“Perhaps Modi was the
only chief minister who
had to sit for hunger strike.
His protest awakened en-
tire Gujarat and the centre
had to give in,” says Bhu-
pendra Chudasama, a sen-
ior BJP leader of Gujarat.

Central agencies used for spying
on Maha leaders: Sharad Pawar
Mumbai (ANI): NCP
chief Sharad Pawar on
Wednesday said that
the video recordings re-
leased by the Leader of
Opposition (LoP), Dev-
endra Fadnavis, in the
Maharashtra Legisla-
tive Assembly on Tues-
day in a way show that
the central agencies
were involved in carry-
ing out the recordings.
“I have heard that the
recordings extend to 125
hours. If that is true,
then you need to have
the support of powerful
agencies to execute this
act. Such agencies are
only available with the
Union government.
They have managed to
enter a state govern-
ment office and carry
out hidden recordings
for hours. I am sure the
state government will
probe the incident and
also the veracity of the
tapes,” Pawar said.
On Tuesday, Fad-
navis had presented
video recordings before
Maharashtra Legisla-
tive Assembly deputy
speaker Narhari Zirw-
al, claiming that the
tapes contain proof
that the leaders of the
Maharashtra Vikas
Aghadi (MVA) govern-
ment were trying to
frame state BJP leaders
in false cases.
In response, Pawar
claimed that the BJP
was making false accu-
sations as it was not be-
ing able to destabilise
the MVA government.
“BJP leaders make
complaints and then
elected representatives
get targeted. This is
happening in Maha-
rashtra and West Ben-
gal,” he added.
Pawar also said that
the central agencies
raided Anil Deshmukh,
his family and associ-
ates at least 90 times.
‘BJP FRUSTRATED AT NOT BEING ABLE TO DESTABILISE MVA GOVERNMENT’
It first needs to
be proved
whether it (the
recording) is authentic
or not. The state govern-
ment will definitely
probe that…the veracity
needs to be confirmed.
My name also seems to
have been dragged di-
rectly/indirectly. There
is no reason, I am not
related to it.

Devendra Fadnavis among BJP leaders
detained during Mumbai protest
Mumbai (PTI): For-
mer Maharashtra chief
minister Devendra Fad-
navis and other BJP
leaders were detained
by police in Mumbai on
Wednesday as they
tried to take out a pro-
test march to press for
state minister Nawab
Malik’s resignation.
They were released
later, said a police offi-

BJP leaders tried to
take out a protest march
from Azad Maidan in

The protest also led to
traffic snarls in the
area. Extra police force
had been deployed in
the area in view of the
protest, the official said.
No FIR has been reg-

the protest, the police
official added.

EXIT POLLS SHOULD BE BANNED,

Amritsar: Days after several exit polls predicted a clean
sweep for Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Punjab assembly
elections, Shiromani Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal on
Wednesday said that he does not believe
in them and further mentioned that exit
polls and opinion polls should be banned.
SAD expressed confidence in being voted
to power in the recently held assembly
elections. Addressing a press conference
today, Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukh-
bir Singh Badal said, “SAD represents the
voice of people. I hope God gives us the chance to do Seva

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will
hold a roadshow in Ahmedabad on Friday and
also address a rally of over one lakh elected
representatives of panchayat bodies as part of
his two-day visit to Gujarat on March 11 and 12,
a State Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader said
on Wednesday. Modi’s visit to his home State will
come a day after the declaration of results of the
Assembly elections in five States. Gujarat will go
to polls at the end of this year.
MANIPUR: A FOUR-CORNERED CONTEST?
Sharat K Verma
New Delhi: Imagine for
a minute, what if BJP
does not win or its gov-
ernment is not formed
in Manipur? If that hap-
pens then the National
People’s Party (NPP), an
ally of the BJP in Ma-
nipur, will also part
ways.KeepinmindCon-
rad Sangma, son of late
PA Sangma, Speaker of
the Lok Sabha, is cur-
rently the Chief Minis-
ter of Meghalaya and
the BJP is included in
his government. On the
other hand, in Manipur,
Sangma’s NPP had ex-
tended the support of
four of its MLAs to the
BJP. Apart from the
NPP
, the support of four
MLAs of Manipur Peo-
ple’s Front was also
with the BJP. But the
BJP left both its allies
and contested on all the
60 seats alone.
Therefore, Manipur’s
has become a four-cor-
nered contest between
the BJP, the Congress,
the NPP and the MPF,
with strong chances of
a hung assembly. Last
time also BJP had won
21 seats and Congress
got 28 seats. This time
on behalf of Congress,
Jairam Ramesh has
camped in Manipur and
he has indicated to form
the government with

of Sangma’s party NPP

Act (AFSPA). In a new
development, just be-
fore the second and last
phase of polling in Ma-
nipur, the Meghalaya
government of Sangma
withdrew the ‘general
consent’ given to the
central agency CBI.
Earlier, eight govern-
ments of the Congress
and other opposition
parties had withdrawn
the ‘general consent’
from the CBI. The effect
of this move may be
seen after the elections.

EVM HACKING: A
CASE OF SOUR
GRAPES?
This isn’t the first time that
allegations of EVM tampering
have been made. In fact, EVM
tampering has long been a poll
issue, with many political
parties also demanding to
return to the use of ballot
papers. Akhilesh Yadav’s EVM
tampering allegations join a
long list of complaints. In 2009,
a senior BJP leader LK Advani,
who was the Leader of
Opposition at that time, had
demanded the reintroduction of
ballot papers for the Assembly
elections in Maharashtra and
three other states. That was the
first time a mainstream political
party had questioned
EVMs. Years later, in 2014, the
BJP won the general election
with a thumping mandate and
their allegations against EVM
tampering were history.
However, since then, the
Opposition has accused the BJP
of tampering with the machines
to win in several Assembly
elections. When the BJP won
the Uttar Pradesh elections in
2017, a stunned Opposition
resorted to EVM tampering
claims; first among them was
Bahujan Samaj Party’s Mayawati
in which many supported her
claims, including Akhilesh
Yadav, Congress, the Left, and
the Aam Aadmi Party. Arvind
Kejriwal, unable to digest that
his party had underperformed in
Punjab in 2017, accused the
Election Commission of working
for the BJP. As EVMs are not
networked devices, hacking any
EVM would require altering the
machine itself. This means that
anyone attempting to hack an
EVM cannot do so remotely, and
would need physical access to
machines themselves, which
would require them to be in
collusion with EVM
manufacturing authorities, the
EC as well as companies that
make the chips for EVMs.

Parties in U’khand begin to

While many exit polls
have given either the
BJP or Congress a ma-
jority in Uttarakhand,
several of them have
predicted a close fight
between the two major
players or a hung as-

which the role of win-

outfits like the AAP, SP,

their leaders have held
several closed-door

selves over the last few
days to deal with differ-
ent scenarios that they

BJP’S BIGGEST CHALLENGE AGAINST CONG

Lucknow: Irrespective
of whichever party
forms government in
UP, what seems to be
certain is that this time
the party would also get
majority in Legislative
Assembly and Legisla-
tive Council from the
very beginning because
the winning members
would play a decisive
role in local body elec-
tions to be held for the
36 seats of Legislative
Council in April.
Till now in UP
, which-
ever party is in power,
its members used to
win in the local body
area. It may be men-
tioned here that the
term of 35 members of
local body in Legisla-
tive Council ended on
March 7. Now nomina-
tions for 35 seats would
be filed between March
15 to 22 while voting
would be held on April
9. In 2022 assembly polls
the main contest is be-
lieved to be between the
BJP and SP. In such a
situation, whichever
party would form the
government, either SP
or BJP, most of the
members of that party
would get elected in the
local body area polls.
There are 47 mem-
bers of the SP in the
100-member Legislative
Council in UP so far, out
of which seven have left
the SP and joined BJP.
Thus BJP has 36,
BSP 6, BJP’s allies
Apna Dal and Nishad
Party have one member
each, Congress has one,
Shikshak Dal has two,
Nirdal group has two
besides one indepen-
dent member. At pres-
ent two posts are va-
cant. A week after the
results of the assembly
elections are an-
nounced, the process of
election would com-
mence for 35 seats.
In UP, three seats of
nominated quota
would become vacant
on April 28 and three
seats on May 26. These
seats would go to the
account of the ruling
party. On July 6, 13 con-
stituency quota seats
will become vacant and
the party which will
have more MLAs, mem-
bers of the same party
are likely to win.

Lucknow: The Uttar

batch IPS officer

Lucknow: The exit
polls have indicated the
BJP’s lead. After the
EVM results are out on
Thursday
, it will be de-
cided to what extent the
exit polls convert into
exact results. From the
perspective of political
parties, all tried their
best to reach the voters
and win the elections.
Party strategists did not
leaveanystoneunturned
to balance equations in
ticket distribution.
In the elections to the
403-member assembly,
the BJP contested 92
percent seats. The re-
maining eight percent
of seats were given to
the quota of allies. Out
of which Sanjay Ni-
shad-led Nishad Party
got 16 seats while An-
upriya Patel-led Apna
Dal (S) contested on 17
seats. Rajendra Kumar
Maurya was fielded
from BJP’s side after
Apna Dal (S) decided
not to field any candi-
date for Pratapgarh Sa-
dar seat. Since then the
number of declared
candidates of BJP has
reached 370. Six candi-
dates of Nishad Party
contested from BJP’s
Lotus symbol. Yogi Ad-
ityanath, who broke the
no-visit jinx of the CM
in Noida, wants to re-
peat the 25-yr-old histo-
ry by forming the gov-
ernment again in the
state, when Mayawati
returned to power after
being ousted from pow-
er in the nineties.
Whereas, the SP con-
tested 86 percent of the
seats i.e. 348 seats with
its symbol cycle, giving
55 seats to the alliance
partners. The main par-
tieswithwhichAkhilesh
Yadav’s party formed an
alliance were, Rashtriya
Lok Dal, Progressive Sa-
majwadi Party
, Mahan
Dal, National Democrat-
icParty
,SuheldevBhara-

, Apna

. Of these,
RashtriyaLokDalgot33,
SBSP 8 and Apna Dal
(Kameravadi) got four
seats. However, Pallavi
Patel of Apna Dal
(Kameravadi) entered
the fray from Sirathu

PSPLNationalPresident
Shivpal Singh Yadav

nagar seat. Mahan Dal’s
national president Kes-

the Utraula seat on SP’s

hat do I
write about
D e e w a r ?
This is one
movie on
which each
one of us
can write…so I will
just share with my
deepest feelings that I
wish Nirupama Roy,
the mother had taken
the side of Vijay, Am-
itabh Bachhan in one
of his best roles so far.
For me the most heart-
wrenching scene of
Deewar is not ‘Mere
paas Maa hai’ but
when Nirupama tear-
fully watches a young
Shashi Kapoor
standing forlornly at
the gate of the school
and shares with her
other child, Amitabh
that she can’t even af-
ford to send them both
to school and he re-
plies that maybe she
can’t earn enough to
send them both to
school but they both
can earn enough to
send Shashi to school.
My heart weeps for
this tender child, al-
ready tortured
by the ‘tat-
too’ of
‘ M e r a
b a a p
chor hai’
standing
up to
shoulder
the re-
sponsibility. And the
difference is clear to
see. Amitabh grows
up to be a brooding
young man, who re-
fuses to enter a temple
even if he takes his
mother there daily
and will not stand for
injustice as he lives
bound tightly by his
past and present bur-
dens while Shashi is a
happy-go-lucky man
with opportunities in
life and love.
I wish Nirupama
had looked be-
yond her princi-
ples to see the
little child in the
angry towering
Amitabh and been
there for him as he
was there for her
and Shashi, al-
ways.
For me, the
movie was
path-break-
ing for the
character
of Praveen
Babi and
the ac-
ceptance
given to
her by
Amitabh, two scarred
souls reaching out to
each other…hoping
for a future.
Amitabh makes
choices that are not
governed by greed but
by his past and the
contempt he feels for a
society that branded
him and his mother
for his father’s un-
proven misdeeds. He
is the perfect anti-he-
ro, unapologetic but
with a bleeding heart.
From ‘Mere paas
Maa hai’ to ‘Main aaj
phi fenke hue paise
nahi uthata’ , Deewar
has spawned decades
of movies and charac-
ters which continue to
inspire and thrill us
and still the stuff for
memes.
I have nothing
much to say about the
songs except for the
cute Keh doon tum-
hein by Shashi and
Neetu Singh.
Deewar’s theme is
clearly one of class
struggle with an anti-
establishment narra-
tive which is still rele-
vant. I could write a
hundred, a thousand
more words for Dee-
war but you need
heart to experience
this movie, watch it
today… every minute
will be worth it and
you will prefer to
write your own

  • 1. BJP trying to commit fraud: Akhilesh Yadav Lucknow: The BJP is attempting fraud as the SP-led alliance is going to win the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elec- tions, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav said on Wednes- day, exhorting party workers to foil the ruling party’s con- spiracies. “Treat the counting centres as the pilgrimage of democ- racy. Go there and stand firm,” Yadav said in a tweet. “Foil every conspiracy by the rul- ing party to manipulate the election results, he said. “The SP alliance is winning, that is why the BJP is trying to commit fraud,” Yadav added. BJP demands EC action against Akhilesh for ‘false charges’ ‘TRYING TO INCITE ANTI-SOCIAL ELEMENTS’ New Delhi(PTI): The BJP on Wednesday peti- tionedtheElectionCom- mission demanding ac- tion against Samajwadi Party president Akhile- sh Yadav for allegedly trying to “incite anti-so- cial elements” over the electoral process. A BJP delegation sub- mitted a memorandum to Chief Election Com- missioner Sushil Chan- dra, claiming that Ya- dav, through a press conference on Tuesday, had “attempted to spread disaffection and levelled brazen, unsub- stantiated, frivolous and false charges against the Election Commis- sion and its officials”. “Should such leaders even be allowed to par- ticipate in the elections, the ultimate celebra- tion of democracy? The commission must take a view on the matter,” the BJP leaders said in the memorandum to the Commission. Senior BJP leaders including Dharmendra Pradhan, who is the BJP’s election in-charge for UP , and Mukhtar Ab- bas Naqvi, G Kishan Reddy and Om Pathak requested the Commis- sion to ensure that the counting process, its venues and the areas around it are fully pro- tected. At a press confer- ence in Lucknow on Tuesday, Yadav had al- leged that senior gov- ernment officials in the state capital were di- recting their subordi- nates in the districts to slow down the counting of votes and prolong the process till late night where the chances of the BJP candidates win- ning were slim. “Spreading lies and inciting citizens is a se- rious and grave offence and Akhilesh Yadav and his cohorts must be held accountable and be charged under rel- evant provisions of Election code and Indian Penal Code,” the BJP leaders said. Kishan Reddy talk to the media after a meeting with Election Commissioners in New Delhi on Wednesday. —PHOTO BY PTI Y ogi Adityanath returning in Ut- tar Pradesh, a comfortable AAP victo- ry in Punjab, a dead- heat race in Uttara- khand and Goa and a BJP sweep in Manipur — as the exit polls put out their predictions, all eyes are set on tomor- row’s results as the As- sembly elections in the five states draw to a close. In Uttar Pradesh, most pollsters, barring two forecasts that the ruling BJP may suffer losses, predict them crossing the half-way mark of 202 comfortably and retaining power, bucking a trend of near- ly four decades. The state has not returned a government to power since 1985. The SP-RLD alliance, which waged a spirited campaign, may make major gains as compared to 2017 but is likely to fall well short of the magic figure. The Congress, the polls pre- dicted, would remain in single digits. In Punjab, most pre- dictions see an AAP win, with the party be- ing comfortably ahead of the ruling Congress and the Akali Dal-BSP combine. If the AAP manages to win Punjab, the outcome has the po- tential to trigger a churning in Indian poli- tics, especially in the Opposition space as no other party barring the BJP and the Congress are in power in more than one state now. Political parties in both Uttarakhand and Goa are preparing for post-poll scenarios — lining up resorts and rushing senior leaders to handle the situation. While in Goa, the Con- gress election candi- dates and party leaders convened at a hotel in Bambolim, the party was also considering the same in Uttara- khand. Meanwhile, sit- ting BJP Goa CM Pramod Sawant trav- elled to Delhi Tuesday to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Un- ion Home Minister Amit Shah. Moscow (Agencies): Russia warned the West on Wednesday that it was working on a broad response to sanctions that would be swift and felt in the West’s most sensitive areas. “Russia’s reaction will be swift, thoughtful and sensitive for those it addresses,” Dmitry Birichevsky, the direc- tor of the foreign minis- try’s department for economic cooperation, was quoted as saying by the RIA news agency . Also, the Election Commission has deputed two special officers, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Bihar HR Srinivas to Varanasi and CEO Delhi Ranbir Singh to Meerut to supervise the counting arrangements. Samajwadi Party has demanded that Election Com- mission webcast the counting of votes live. The link, the party said, should be given to the political parties which contested the election, apart from the ECI. Citing the live webcast of election in at least more than 50 per of election centres, SP said in a letter that the counting also should be webcast to ensure that it is “efficient, independent and free”. This comes as Ukraine’s war with Russia entered day 14. Several key cities in Ukraine are witnessing relentless shelling. The Kremlin accused the United States on Wednesday of declaring an economic war on Russia that was sowing mayhem through energy markets and put the United States on notice that it was thinking care- fully how to respond to a ban on oil. • 2. UTTAR PRADESH LUCKNOW | THURSDAY, MARCH 10, 2022 02 www.firstindia.co.in I www.firstindia.co.in/epaper/ I twitter.com/thefirstindia I facebook.com/thefirstindia I instagram.com/thefirstindia ‘Only India bringing citizens back from Ukraine’ YOGIMEETSSTUDENTSFROMGORAKHPURWHORETURNEDFROMUKRAINE, SAYSSTUDENTSFROMOTHERCOUNTRIESWERELEFTONTHEIROWN Lucknow( PTI): Uttar Pradesh Chief Minis- ter Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday met stu- dents from Gorakha- pur who returned from Ukraine, and claimed that only India was tak- ing action to bring back its citizens from the war-torn country . The Ukrainian air- space has been shut since February 24 due to the Russian military offensive. The Indian citizens stuck in Ukraine are being air- lifted once they cross to neighbouring coun- tries such as Romania, Hungary, Slovakia and Poland. The chief minister claimed that students from other countries were left on their own while “only India has ensured the safe return of their residents.” “This facility (of bring- ing back home) was available only to Indian citizens and students. You must have seen that students from oth- er countries studying with you were left on their own at the mercy of God. Their govern- ments did not take any cognizance of bringing them back,” he said. Adityanath said, “Because of Prime Minister Narendra Mo- di’s good relations with Romania, Hungary and Poland, no problem has arisen anywhere. The facilities which the cit- izens of India were get- ting at the borders of these countries, people from other nations were not getting them,” the CM said. The chief minister said as soon as Russia attacked Ukraine, PM Modi held a meeting to bring back its citizens safely to India. “The Uttar Pradesh government also col- lected information about all the people of the state studying in Ukraine by deploying nodal officers. PM Modi himself took in- terest and sent four Union ministers to bring them back to In- dia. It expresses the sentiments of the gov- ernment,” he said. Nothing can be said about how many days will the war last but the students who have re- turned from Ukraine should continue to pre- pare for their courses here, the CM said. CM Yogi with students who returned from Ukraine at his official residence. The CM said that a total of 2,290 students from UP were living and studying in Ukraine. He said, “2078 of them have been brought back. All arrangements are being made to bring back those who are left. Out of 74 students from Gorakhpur, 70 have been brought back. Remaining four are also being brought back,” he said. 2078 OF 2290 STUDENTS RESCUED The government is also concerned about your (the students who belong to Uttar Pradesh and were studying in Ukraine). The government here is think- ing about it. —Yogi Adityanath, Chief Minister Russian forces did not stop students after seeing the tricolour Aligarh (ANI): Students evacuated from war-battered Ukraine expressed their gratitude to- wards the Indian Flag in helping them seek safe pas- sage to home. The Centre launched ‘Opera- tion Ganga’ to bring back the stranded students in Ukraine following the Rus- sian military attack in Ukraine. The Centre had arranged flights for the Indian nation- als once they crossed the Roma- nia border. But the journey to the bor- ders was not easy for the students. “Seeking a way out to Romania was dif- ficult, there was less help from the Indian Embassy . We arranged transport on our own to move out of the city. As the war started, we were in contact with the Embassy. We were told to put Indian Flag on our buses to avoid fac- ing problems on the way. . It’s a matter of pride that Rus- sian Forces did not stop us seeing the Tricolor Flag and we got easy clear- ance,” told a medi- cal student, Neyam Rashid, who re- turned to UP from Ukraine. 4 BEEGHA LAND ON BET OVER BJP WINS OR SP Janardan Mishra Lucknow: While the result for the UP As- semby polls will be an- nounced today, there are some interesting cases of bets being placed on the outcomes. Placing bets verbally is common, but there are some who have en- tered into written con- tracts to make sure that they win. Recently, a bet of four beegha land was report- edly placed in Viriyad- nandi village of Shekh- upur assembly where a Panchayat was going on. Talks took a politi- cal twist and two fac- tions were reportedly arguing over SP and BJP’s win in the state. The matter related to the political issue soon escalated to a level that one Sher Ali who claimed that the SP will form a government pledged his four bee- gha land to Udayveer Singh for a period of one year who sided BJP and vice versa if BJP forms a government. The agreement was signed on paper and many villagers signed the paper as witnesses to the agreement. The photograph of the agreement soon went viral on social media. Earlier, a contract signed on a Rs 10 stamp paper went viral over the social media cir- cles, which stated that one Iqbal would pay Rs 18000 to Amit Baisal if BJP’s Nandkishor Gur- jar wins the the elec- tions from Loni. Amit Baisal will owe the same amount to Iqbal if Rashtriya Lok Dal’s Madan Bhaiya wins the polls. Bets are being placed on the win of their favourite candidate with regards to the results of the UP polls, which will be announced today. First India Bureau Azamgarh: The UP exit polls have been unanimous in their conclusion of a majori- ty for the incumbent BJP – and by extension, CM Yogi Adityanath – but vastly divided in their seat-projection; one pollster even pre- dicted an upper limit of 326 for the saffron party and its allies. The UP campaign, de- spite the multi-pronged contest in the state, had two clear themes. The ruling BJP sought a re- newed mandate by fero- cious avowals of jingo- istic nationalism, fur- ther othering of the Muslim minority and by raising the bogey of a global crisis (a la Ukraine) that India can withstand only as long as Narendra Modi re- mains prime minister. The party’s continuing effort to further fortify its Hindutva-identity, one that subsumes all caste identities, while simultaneously creat- ing a caste and religion neutral electoral bloc of ‘laabharthis’ who must repay the government in votes . There was much that gave hope to the opposi- tion, especially to Akh- ilesh Yadav who was clearly viewed as lead- ing the best formation that could oust the BJP. It is this public anger that political stalwarts such as Swami Prasad Maurya and Dara Singh Chauhan, with their reputation of being electoral weathervanes, sensed when they chose to dump BJP and defect to SP , along with several MLAs loyal to them. The BJP maintained that none of these is- sues would stop it from crossing the majority mark. For Akhilesh, who woke up rather late in the day but quickly built a formidable coali- tion and ran a visibly popular campaign, a loss would almost cer- tainly lead to another churn within the SP that had, in 2017, been witness to an ugly and embarrassing feud within its founding family. A loss would also threaten the sus- tainability of the social engineering he had tried to achieve in this election by compromis- ing his core Muslim-Ya- dav vote bank to add to it other non-Yadav backward castes and non-Jatav Dalits. The Congress was nev- er tipped to win UP but it was hopeful of a fair increase in its dwin- dling vote share in the state because of the massive crowds that turned up for Priyanka Gandhi’s campaign. Gandhi aspires to change UP’s political discourse with her ‘Ladki Hoon Lad Sakti Hoon’ plank, out-of-the- box candidate selection strategy and issue-ori- ented politics. For BSP Supremo Mayawati, a failure to hold on to her Dalit vote bank in Uttar Pradesh – especially if her cap- tive bloc of Jatav votes also splits – would make her even more political- ly vulnerable than she has already begun to appear. UP decides: What the outcome would mean for major players POLLITICS  While many political experts are certain of BJP’s win, they are divided over the number of seats it may win —FILE PHOTO ANTI-BJP ISSUES SECURITY PREPS Cops patrol the street to review the security measures taken on the eve of vote counting for the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, in Kanpur on Wednesday. —PHOTO BY ANI MINISTER MOHSIN RAZA SLAMS SP CHIEF OVER EVM TAMPERING REMARKS Opposition has accepted defeat in UP polls, says BJP’s Shrikant Sharma Lucknow (ANI): Uttar Pradesh Minister Mohsin Raza on Wednesday slammed Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav for ac- cusing the ruling BJP of trying to “steal” votes by saying that it is sad to question the working of Election Commission of India. Speaking to ANI today, Raza said, “It is sad to question the working of ECI. Indirectly, they are accepting their defeat by questioning the EVMs. Our party will accept the mandate of the people. Exit polls have come. The exact poll result will come to- morrow.” “Akhilesh speaks with- out logic. If you do not have logic, then why will public vote for you? Akhilesh was almost invisible for the last five years,” he added. Mathura ( PTI): Uttar Pradesh Minister Shri- kant Sharma on Wednesday slammed the Samajwadi Party for levelling allegations of the EVM tampering and said that the Oppo- sition party has already accepted the defeat in the Assembly elections. “Their (Akhilesh Ya- dav) allegations are baseless. They have ac- cepted their defeat that is why they are blaming EVMs,” said Sharma. Further launching an attack on Akhilesh Ya- dav, the BJP leader said that the SP government had served the interests only of particular castes. “People had rejected him in the 2017 elec- tions. His government was limited for the ben- efit of certain families and castes,” he said. Confident about the BJP’s victory, Sharma said, “We have travelled across the state to re- view the works done by our departments.” “Because of our hard work people will elect us again and we will form the government,” he added. Mohsin Raza Shrikant Sharma. HAILS UP GOVT Brajesh Pathak confident of BJP’s victory in elections Lucknow (ANI): Uttar Pradesh Minis- ter Brijesh Pathak slammed Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav for accusing the ruling BJP of try- ing to “steal” votes by saying that one cannot do anything about Yadav’s thought process. BJP leader Pathak also exuded confi- dence in Bharatiya Janata Party being voted to power again. Speaking to ANI to- day, Pathak said, “People of Uttar Pradesh have blessed BJP in the recently held Assembly elec- tions. One can see the change in exit poll results and the actu- al results tomorrow. The results will be in favour of the BJP.”, Pathak said. UTTAR PRADESH LUCKNOW | THURSDAY, MARCH 10, 2022 03 www.firstindia.co.in I www.firstindia.co.in/epaper/ I twitter.com/thefirstindia I facebook.com/thefirstindia I instagram.com/thefirstindia First India Bureau Lucknow: A row has erupted over the protec- tion of EVMs used in polling in the seven phases of polling from February 10 to March 7. Reacting to SP’s accu- sation of hacking of EVMs former Secretary to Government of India Vijay Shankar Pandey said EVMs have over the years vastly im- proved the electoral process with transpar- ency, and those oppos- ing it have been mis- leading people by false assertion that EVMs could be hacked by Bluetooth or Wi-fi. Pandey said demon- stration in the past by some people to rig the EVMs has no validity as time and again the EC invited stakeholders to effectively demonstrate its functioning. Pandey said Voters Verified Audit Trail Machines (VVPATs) and the latest M3 model system appears to have further improved. He said EVMs despite some functional prob- lems had vastly im- proved the electoral system. Pandey said there have been reports of malfunctioning of large number of machines during the elections and it is binding on the EC to do more to clear the apprehensions of stakeholders about the production, security and allotment of ma- chines. He said even though problem of mal- functioning required to be set right urgently the EVM model cannot be termed as flawed. These machines have saved the election process from decades of looting and stashing of ballot papers into ballot boxes at polling stations by hooligans. He said the commission’s electoral efficiency should not come at the cost of cred- ibility . Though EVMs are stored in strong rooms in various districts for the last one month in western UP, the SP workers created ruckus when they spotted a truck carrying some machines in Varanasi. SP president Akhilesh Yadav attacked BJP ac- cusing it of “stealing votes by manipulating EVMs”. However, the BJP strongly rebutted the charge. Lucknow (PTI): Count- ing of votes polled in the Assembly elections will take place today , in all the 75 districts of the state, starting at 8 am. “The postal ballots will be counted first, and then the votes polled in the EVMs will be counted,” a senior election official said. The official said, “Covid protocols, in- cluding the use of hand gloves, sanitisers, masks, thermal scan- ners and adhering to socialdistancingnorms, will be followed at the counting centres.” “The votes cast through postal ballots, including those by peo- ple with disabilities and senior citizens above 80 years, will be counted manually , while the votes of the service vot- ers --- ETPBS (Electroni- callyTransmittedPostal Ballot System) will be done online,” he said Apart from this, VVPAT slips of five ma- chines will be counted in every assembly con- stituency . The Supreme Court had on April 8, 2019 di- rectedtheECtoincrease random matching of VVPATslipswithEVMs tofivepollingboothsper assembly segment, from one, duringthethenLok Sabha polls, saying it will provide greater sat- isfaction not just to po- litical parties but to the entire electorate. Video and static cam- eras have been installed at all the counting cen- tres, the official said, adding media centres have also been set up. “Adequate AROs (As- sistant Returning Offi- cers)havebeendeployed ineveryconstituencyfor interruption-free count- ing,” the official said. He said a three-layer security set-up has been madecomprisingof cen- tral police forces, PAC and the state police. To- tal 250 companies of CAPFs (Central Armed Police Forces) have been provided to all the dis- trictsandcommissioner- ates, the police said. Lucknow(ANI): A day after former chief minister Akh- ilesh Yadav alleged “tampering with electronic voting ma- chines”, Samajwadi Party (SP) wrote a letter to the Election Commission and de- manded the webcast- ing of the counting process in all constit- uencies of Uttar Pradesh to ensure “efficient, indepen- dent and free of par- tisanship” counting. In a letter to the Chief Election Com- missioner, the Akh- ilesh Yadav-led party has requested the poll body to send the link of the webcast to all political par- ties, apart from the Election Commis- sioner of India and the other key elec- tion officials, so that it can be watched live. This develop- ment comes after Sa- majwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav al- leged “tampering with electronic vot- ing machines” say- ing BJP was scared as his party was win- ning Ayodhya. He urged the Election Commission to look into the issue. “Samajwadi Party is winning Ayodhya that is why BJP is scared. Election Commission officials tampering with EVMs,” he claimed at a press conference here. Yadav also al- leged that EVMs had been transported in Varanasi without in- formation to local candidates. However, the Chief Electoral Officer, UP said those EVMs were marked for training. Lucknow/Varanasi/ Bareilly (PTI): Three officials were removed from election duty in Ut- tar Pradesh on Wednes- day , a day after the Sam- ajwadi Party alleged EVMs were being shift- ed in an unauthorised manner. The officials were re- placed on the directions of the EC. Nodal officer for EVMs in Varanasi, a returning officer in Son- bhadra district and an additional election offi- cerinBareillyhavebeen pulled out from election duties, a day ahead of the counting of votes. Apart from UP , count- ing of votes in Uttara- khand, Punjab, Goa and Manipur will take place on Thursday . Janardan Misra Lucknow: Ahead of counting day of assem- bly elections in UP ten- sion prevailed in several areas and party mem- berswerekeepingeyeon counting centres, check- ing vehicles of govern- ment officials including administrative officers. After Samajwadi Par- ty (SP) workers created ruckus alleging that EVMs were being changed, Election com- mission has suspended additional district mag- istrate Nalini Kant Singh in Varanasi. He was responsible for stor- age and transportation of EVMs in the region. ADM (Finance and revenue) Sanjay Kumar was given charge at the place of Nalini Kant Singh. Meanwhile SP al- liance supporters along with Arvind Rajbhar were thronged at count- ing centre at Pahadiya Mandi. I am confident that the park will promote a healthy lifestyle among the people living in the area. Rajnath Singh @rajnathsingh hen Narendra Modi took over the reins of Gujarat for the second consecutive time, he realised that the state cannot develop with- out investment. This un- derlined the basis for con- ceptualising a mega invest- ment meet for Gujarat - Vi- brant Investment Global Gujarat Summit - which is still being organised every two years to attract invest- ment from across the globe. The summit which started in 2003 grew in size and scale every year and invest- ment poured in from across the sectors to prove Guja- rat as a safe haven for busi- ness and industries devel- opment. While the state started getting attention of corporates and industrial- ists, a visionary Modi trained his guns for achiev- ing all-round development of the state in a mission mode. Modi’s balanced ap- proach towards welfare was being praised by one and all. His initiatives to improve the living stand- ard of citizens is now being hailed as Gujarat model of development across the globe. It has become a topic to research how an under- developed state improved on almost all the parame- ters of human index with- in a short span of time. Modi’s key to develop- ment was to nurture skills of people and create em- ployment opportunities for them. For this, he promot- ed vocational courses, launched schemes for edu- cating poor people. He fo- cused on providing a qual- ity life to a common Guja- rat by launching pro- grammes like Pehle shauchalay aur phir Deva- lay . These programmes cre- ated awareness about cleanliness, hygiene and importance of health among people. His scheme Gram Jyoti Yojana aimed at 24X7 power supply to every household not only electrified the entire rural Gujarat but also ignited minds of people. These schemes laid the founda- tion of a prosperous state. “24X7 power supply for every household was start- ed in Gujarat when no one in the country could even think of such thing. It’s the vision of Modi ji which has made this happen,” said R Balashankar, a senior journalist. The focus was also on increasing the crop yield in agriculture. Modi launched agri- culture carnivals and several farm schemes to increase the pro- ductivity and income of farmers. He intro- duced soil health card to evaluate the nature and fertility of soil so that farmers may use fertilisers and ma- nures as per the re- quirement. “When there is change in farming, change in agriculture, then there is eminent change in sys- tem,” Modi had then an- nounced. Modi focused on basics. He improved the health- care system, agriculture set up and took innovative initiatives to increase ru- ral income. He brought ur- ban facilities to villages by overhauling the govern- ment hospitals and in- creasing the number of medical colleges. “NarendraModihadsaid, if countryneedstobeshown direction, only Gujaratis can guide. Even if it takes expense to generate power from solar rays….the land of our Kutch is so vast that we can supply solar power to entire country from here,” said Saurabh Patel, former minister of Gujarat. With his all-round initi- atives, Gujarat got Asia’s largest solar plant, the world’s largest canal net- work and the country’s first riverfront. “When the project of Sa- barmatiriverfrontwascom- pleted, thousands of poor peoplelivinginslumsonthe either side of the river got permanent housing. He showed the best utilisation of space worth 2 square km on either side of the river bank. That showed us how problemsof commonpeople can be dealt with and how they can lead a meaningful life,” reminisced Bimal Pa- tel, an architect. Modi’s tenure as chief minister is punctuated with several live trans- forming achievements in- cluding setting up of the world’s highest statue - Statue of Unity, lifting the water table by construct- ing millions of check dams and bringing Narmada water to dry and arid re- gions of Kutch and Sau- rashtra among several other initiatives which have become examples for not only governments in the country but also for global organisations. Modi’s unique heart touching initiatives have made the famous Gujarat Model of development, which also comprises modernisation of police system,internetconnec- tions at panchayat level and handling of all the public complaints on- line in a transparent manner. This not only reduced corruption in the state system but also improved efficiency and efficacy of government schemes. Modi started marching ahead on the is- sue of development leaving behind the age-old politics of vote bank. But the road to development was not easy . Modi was to face im- pediments on his way . The challenge for Modi came in form of Sardar Sa- rovar dam which had been a bone of contention for years between centre, state and NGOs. If that is true, then you need to have the support of powerful agencies to execute this act. Such agencies are only available with the Union government. They have managed to enter a state govern- ment office and carry out hidden recordings for hours. I am sure the state government will probe the incident and also the veracity of the tapes,” Pawar said. On Tuesday, Fad- navis had presented video recordings before Maharashtra Legisla- tive Assembly deputy speaker Narhari Zirw- al, claiming that the tapes contain proof that the leaders of the Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) govern- ment were trying to frame state BJP leaders in false cases. In response, Pawar claimed that the BJP was making false accu- sations as it was not be- ing able to destabilise the MVA government. “BJP leaders make complaints and then elected representatives get targeted. This is happening in Maha- rashtra and West Ben- gal,” he added. Pawar also said that the central agencies raided Anil Deshmukh, his family and associ- ates at least 90 times. ‘BJP FRUSTRATED AT NOT BEING ABLE TO DESTABILISE MVA GOVERNMENT’ It first needs to be proved whether it (the recording) is authentic or not. But the BJP left both its allies and contested on all the 60 seats alone. Therefore, Manipur’s has become a four-cor- nered contest between the BJP, the Congress, the NPP and the MPF, with strong chances of a hung assembly. Last time also BJP had won 21 seats and Congress got 28 seats. This time on behalf of Congress, Jairam Ramesh has camped in Manipur and he has indicated to form the government with NPPandJDU.Thetrend of Sangma’s party NPP is also visible to be against the BJP. NPP has opposed the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA). This isn’t the first time that allegations of EVM tampering have been made. In fact, EVM tampering has long been a poll issue, with many political parties also demanding to return to the use of ballot papers. Akhilesh Yadav’s EVM tampering allegations join a long list of complaints. In 2009, a senior BJP leader LK Advani, who was the Leader of Opposition at that time, had demanded the reintroduction of ballot papers for the Assembly elections in Maharashtra and three other states. That was the first time a mainstream political party had questioned EVMs. Years later, in 2014, the BJP won the general election with a thumping mandate and their allegations against EVM tampering were history. However, since then, the Opposition has accused the BJP of tampering with the machines to win in several Assembly elections. When the BJP won the Uttar Pradesh elections in 2017, a stunned Opposition resorted to EVM tampering claims; first among them was Bahujan Samaj Party’s Mayawati in which many supported her claims, including Akhilesh Yadav, Congress, the Left, and the Aam Aadmi Party. Arvind Kejriwal, unable to digest that his party had underperformed in Punjab in 2017, accused the Election Commission of working for the BJP. As EVMs are not networked devices, hacking any EVM would require altering the machine itself. This means that anyone attempting to hack an EVM cannot do so remotely, and would need physical access to machines themselves, which would require them to be in collusion with EVM manufacturing authorities, the EC as well as companies that make the chips for EVMs. —M Tariq Khan HUSBAND AMONG 5 BOOKED FOR DOWRY DEATH Acase of dowry death was registered against the husband and in-laws of a woman who died after the car in which she was travelling plunged into a canal here, police said on Wednesday. The woman’s family alleged in their police complaint that she was being harassed by her in-laws for dowry and claimed that she was murdered. On Tuesday, police registered a case of dowry death against the woman’s husband -- Babur and four others, including her mother-in-law Nisha Begum, brothers-in-law Hasan and Danish, and sister-in-law Shaheen. —PTI Parties in U’khand begin to fine-tune their strategies Dehradun (PTI): With less than 24 hours to go forcountingof votes,po- litical parties in Uttara- khand on Wednesday began fine-tuning their strategies to deal with any scenario that could possibly emerge once the results of the assem- bly polls are declared. Countingof votesforthe state’s 70 assembly seats will begin at 8 am on Thursday . Over 65 per cent polling had been re- corded in the Uttara- khand Assembly Polls held on February 14. While many exit polls have given either the BJP or Congress a ma- jority in Uttarakhand, several of them have predicted a close fight between the two major players or a hung as- sembly - a scenario in which the role of win- ning independents and candidates of regional outfits like the AAP, SP, BSP and UKD will be- come significant in gov- ernment formation. The BJP and Con- gress are locked in straightcontestson40to 45 seats, while the re- gional outfits make the fight triangular on 25-30 seats. Though the BJP andCongresshaveexud- ed confidence of win- ning a clear majority, their leaders have held several closed-door meetings among them- selves over the last few days to deal with differ- ent scenarios that they may confront after the poll results. The major parties are also keeping an eye on rebels who en- tered the fray as inde- pendents against their official nominees. It is alleged that the contractor siphoned off government funds by submitting fake bills showing unskilled workers engaged in My- sore circle of the Ar- chaeological Survey of India (ASI) tending lawns of historical sites 2,000 kilometers away in Lucknow. Labourers listed under ASI’s Kota and Delhi circles were also shown working in Lucknow. Similar bo- gus bills were also sub- mitted for maintenance of lawns in cites like Kushinagar, Agra, Kan- pur, among others, on the basis of which huge funds were embezzled by the contractor Kuldeep Singh, they said. The complaint, now a part of the FIR, gave specific details about archaeological sites in UP like the icon- ic Taj Mahal and The Residency in Lucknow. The Residency, also called as the British Residency and Residen- cy Complex, is a group of several buildings in a common precinct in Uttar Pradesh’s capital city Lucknow. Till now in UP , which- ever party is in power, its members used to win in the local body area. It may be men- tioned here that the term of 35 members of local body in Legisla- tive Council ended on March 7. Now nomina- tions for 35 seats would be filed between March 15 to 22 while voting would be held on April 9. In 2022 assembly polls the main contest is be- lieved to be between the BJP and SP. In such a situation, whichever party would form the government, either SP or BJP, most of the members of that party would get elected in the local body area polls. There are 47 mem- bers of the SP in the 100-member Legislative Council in UP so far, out of which seven have left the SP and joined BJP. Thus BJP has 36, BSP 6, BJP’s allies Apna Dal and Nishad Party have one member each, Congress has one, Shikshak Dal has two, Nirdal group has two besides one indepen- dent member. At pres- ent two posts are va- cant. A week after the results of the assembly elections are an- nounced, the process of election would com- mence for 35 seats. In UP, three seats of nominated quota would become vacant on April 28 and three seats on May 26. These seats would go to the account of the ruling party. On July 6, 13 con- stituency quota seats will become vacant and the party which will have more MLAs, mem- bers of the same party are likely to win. Ahtesham Siddiqui Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh government has reinstated 2006 batch IPS officer Abhishek Dixit, who had been suspended for almost one and a half years on charges of cor- ruption. The 2006 batch IPS officers of Tamil Nadu cadre had come to UP on deputation. Abhishek Dixit was suspendedonSeptember 8, 2020 on charges of cor- ruption. During the deployment in Prayagraj, large-scale corruption was carried out in transfer posting, a complaint of which was sent to CM Yogi on Sep- tember 8, 2020, after which Vigilance inquiry was ordered to investi- gate the properties of Dixitduringsuspension. Gyanendra Kumar Shukla Lucknow: The exit polls have indicated the BJP’s lead. After the EVM results are out on Thursday , it will be de- cided to what extent the exit polls convert into exact results. From the perspective of political parties, all tried their best to reach the voters and win the elections. Party strategists did not leaveanystoneunturned to balance equations in ticket distribution. In the elections to the 403-member assembly, the BJP contested 92 percent seats. The re- maining eight percent of seats were given to the quota of allies. Out of which Sanjay Ni- shad-led Nishad Party got 16 seats while An- upriya Patel-led Apna Dal (S) contested on 17 seats. Rajendra Kumar Maurya was fielded from BJP’s side after Apna Dal (S) decided not to field any candi- date for Pratapgarh Sa- dar seat. Since then the number of declared candidates of BJP has reached 370. Six candi- dates of Nishad Party contested from BJP’s Lotus symbol. Whereas, the SP con- tested 86 percent of the seats i.e. 348 seats with its symbol cycle, giving 55 seats to the alliance partners. The main par- tieswithwhichAkhilesh Yadav’s party formed an alliance were, Rashtriya Lok Dal, Progressive Sa- majwadi Party , Mahan Dal, National Democrat- icParty ,SuheldevBhara- tiya Samaj Party , Apna Dal (Communist), Gond- wana Party . • 10. hat do I write about D e e w a r ? This is one movie on which each one of us can write…so I will just share with my deepest feelings that I wish Nirupama Roy, the mother had taken the side of Vijay, Am- itabh Bachhan in one of his best roles so far. For me the most heart- wrenching scene of Deewar is not ‘Mere paas Maa hai’ but when Nirupama tear- fully watches a young Shashi Kapoor standing forlornly at the gate of the school and shares with her other child, Amitabh that she can’t even af- ford to send them both to school and he re- plies that maybe she can’t earn enough to send them both to school but they both can earn enough to send Shashi to school. My heart weeps for this tender child, al- ready tortured by the ‘tat- too’ of ‘ M e r a b a a p chor hai’ standing up to shoulder the re- sponsibility. And the difference is clear to see. Amitabh grows up to be a brooding young man, who re- fuses to enter a temple even if he takes his mother there daily and will not stand for injustice as he lives bound tightly by his past and present bur- dens while Shashi is a happy-go-lucky man with opportunities in life and love. I wish Nirupama had looked be- yond her princi- ples to see the little child in the angry towering Amitabh and been there for him as he was there for her and Shashi, al- ways. For me, the movie was path-break- ing for the character of Praveen Babi and the ac- ceptance given to her by Amitabh, two scarred souls reaching out to each other…hoping for a future. Amitabh makes choices that are not governed by greed but by his past and the contempt he feels for a society that branded him and his mother for his father’s un- proven misdeeds. He is the perfect anti-he- ro, unapologetic but with a bleeding heart. From ‘Mere paas Maa hai’ to ‘Main aaj phi fenke hue paise nahi uthata’ , Deewar has spawned decades of movies and charac- ters which continue to inspire and thrill us and still the stuff for memes. I have nothing much to say about the songs except for the cute Keh doon tum- hein by Shashi and Neetu Singh. Deewar’s theme is clearly one of class struggle with an anti- establishment narra- tive which is still rele- vant. I could write a hundred, a thousand more words for Dee- war but you need heart to experience this movie, watch it today… every minute will be worth it and you will prefer to write your own Throwback Thursday .
