No one can be forced to take vaccine, rules Supreme Court
New Delhi (Agencies):
No one can be forced to
take the vaccine, the Su-
preme Court ruled on
Monday in a landmark
decision on India’s Cov-
id vaccine policy, also
directing the central
government to publish
reports on the adverse
effects of vaccination.
“Bodily integrity is
protected under the law
and nobody can be
forced to be vaccinat-
ed,” the Supreme Court
said. The court assert-
ed, however, that “cer-
tain limitations on indi-
vidual rights” could be
imposed in the interest
of community health.
“Barring Covid-ap-
propriate behaviour, we
suggest no curbs on un-
vaccinated individuals
in access to public plac-
es, services and re-
sources if cases are
low,” the Court said.
Restrictions imposed
on individuals through
vaccine mandates can-
not be called to be pro-
portionate, the court
said - a refence to many
states making it essen-
tial for people to get the
Covid shot to access
public places. “Till in-
fection numbers are
low we suggest that no
restriction is imposed
on individuals on ac-
cess to public places,
services and resources.
Recall the same if al-
ready done,” the Su-
preme Court ordered.
Supreme Court Jus-
tices LN Rao and BR Ga-
vai added that their di-
rectivesdidnotextendto
Covid-appropriate be-
haviour, but was limited
to vaccines in the “rap-
idly evolving situation”.
The Supreme Court
also directed the Centre
to publish reports on
adverse events of vac-
cines from people and
doctors on a publicly ac-
cessible system, with-
out compromising the
details of the individu-
als reporting them.
“Regarding segrega-
tion of vaccine trial
data, subject to the pri-
vacy of individuals, all
trials already conduct-
ed and to be subse-
quently conducted, all
data must be made
available to the public
without further delay,”
the court said.
A petition by Jacob
Puliyel, a former mem-
ber of the National
Technical Advisory
GrouponImmunisation
(NTAGI), had argued
that states mandating
vaccination for access-
ing benefits or services
is a violation of citizens’
rights, and therefore,
unconstitutional.

Gurugram (Agencies): With complaints pouring in from
parents that their wards are finding it difficult to travel in
school buses as the vehicles do not turn on the air-condi-
tioners, especially now when the
city is reeling under a heatwave, the
district administration has decided to
hold a meeting with all educational
institutes across the city this week
to discuss the issue and also form four teams to check if the
school buses are keeping the AC on while ferrying students.

little effect on the school authorities.
Delhi Police beefs up security

New Delhi (PTI): In a
bid to maintain peace
and security on the oc-
casion of the festival of
Eid-Ul-Fitr, Delhi Police
has issued an alert in
the National Capital.
The Delhi Police has
made special arrange-

ebrated with great
pomp and show after a
two-year Covid hiatus.
The police will keep
an eye on the anti-social
elements and will main-

untoward incident. Ad-
ditional police forces
have been deployed
across east Delhi, Ja-
hangirpuri, West and

ADDITIONAL COPS
The police has made special arrangments for Eid festival.
New Delhi (PTI): The
Delhi High Court on
Monday allowed certain
portions of Nizamud-
din Markaz, where the
Tablighi Jamaat con-
gregation was held in
March 2020 amid the
COVID-19 pandemic
andwhichhasremained
shut since then, to stay
open till October 14.
Justice Jasmeet Sin-
gh, while dealing with a
plea by the Delhi Waqf
Board, extended the in-
terim order passed last
month on re-opening
certain portions of the
Markaz premises in
view of Ramzan and the
festival of Eid.
The Board had moved
the court in 2021 seeking
directions to reopen the
premises on grounds
that even after unlock-1
guidelines permitted re-
ligious places outside
containment zones to be
opened, the Markaz
comprising the Masjid
Bangle Wali (mosque),
Madarsa Kashif-ul-Ul-
oom, and attached hos-
tel continues to be
locked up.
On April 1, the court
had allowed the mosque
to be opened for the
month of Ramzan while
clarifying that no “Tab-
lighi activities” and lec-
tures can be take place
in the premises and only
prayers can be offered.
“It is directed that for
Ramadan, namaz and
religious prayers shall
be permitted to be of-
fered on the ground
floor and four floors at
Masjid Bangle Wali.
This arrangement is
only for the one month
of Ramzan culminating
with Eid Ul Fitr,” the
court had ordered.
A direction was also
passed for the installa-
tionof functionalCCTV
cameras at the entry,
exit and stairs of each
floor of the premises.
The permission was
in continuation of an
earlier order which im-
posed various condi-
tions for the reopening

What was the main pur-
pose of the meeting of
the Prime Minister
with the Chief Minis-
ters of the states to con-
sider the increasing
cases of Corona virus?
Did it consider the situ-
ation in Corona and dis-
cuss measures to pre-
vent a possible new
wave? Nothing like this
happen because most
states do not have coro-
na cases. Many states
have become complete-
ly free from Corona. In
Uttar Pradesh too, new
cases have increased in
the districts adjacent to
NCR. In Haryana also
only in the districts ad-
jacent to NCR have wit-
nessed a rise. Apart
from Delhi, Haryana,
Uttar Pradesh and Ker-
ala, most of the states
have either no cases or
few cases.
That is why it was as-
tonishing that the
Prime Minister called a
meeting of Chief Min-
isters of all the states
over Corona. By law, the
meeting of the Prime
Minister should have
been held with the
Chief Ministers of
three or four states.
It has happened
many times in the past
that the Prime Minister
held a meeting with the
Chief Ministers of the
states where there were
more cases. But this
time the Chief Minis-
ters of all the states and
the Lieutenant Gover-
nors and Administra-
tors of the Union Ter-
ritories were called,
and that is why
, it seems
that PM’s aim was to
put the states in the
dock regarding VAT on
petrol and diesel.
And one has to admit
that it was a job well
done. Now the state gov-
ernments and the lead-
ers of the opposition
parties are giving clari-
fication and asking the
Center to reduce the
tax, but the Prime Min-
ister has sent the mes-
sage to the people that
the state governments
with the opposition par-
ties have not given re-
lief to the common peo-
ple by cutting VAT,
while the Center And
BJP ruled states gave
relief.

fresh case against Choksi
New Delhi (ANI): The
Central Bureau of In-
vestigation (CBI) has
registered a fresh case
against fugitive dia-
mantaire Mehul Choksi
and his company Gitan-
jali Gems for allegedly
defrauding the Indus-
trial Finance Corpora-
tion of India (IFCI).
A senior CBI officer
said that after the pre-
liminary inquiry into
the complaint received
against Mehul Choksi
and his company Gitan-
jali Gems from the As-
sistant General Man-
ager (AGM) of IFCI, an
FIR under IPC section
420 (cheating), 468 ( For-
gery for purpose of
cheating) and 471 (Who-
ever fraudulently or
dishonestly uses as gen-
uine) has been regis-
tered in Mumbai.
The officer informed
that during the period
2014 to 2018, IFCI Ltd re-
lying on the representa-
tion, assurances and
undertaking of said pri-
vate company as well as
its Director and the
value of the pledged
jewels on the basis of
valuation conducted by
Valuers, had disbursed
the entire loan amount
of Rs 25 crore (approxi-
mately) on the basis of
security cover of two
times, pledge of shares,
pledge of gold, diamond
and gold CS studded
jewellery
.
It was further alleged
that accused had start-
ed committing defaults
in repayment of loan
installments and in or-
der to recover defaulted
amount of the install-
ments, IFCI Ltd invoked
the pledge and the fresh
valuation obtained by
IFCI dropped the valua-
tion of the pledged jew-
els by 90 per cent.
The CBI also alleged
that Director colluded
with the Valuers.
DIAMONDS WERE
OF LOW QUALITY
The diamonds were
allegedly of low quality
 not real gemstones,
officer said. Searches
were conducted at eight
premises of accused valu-
ers in Mumbai and Kolkata
which led to recovery of
incriminating documents
and fresh case against the
fugitive diamantaire has
been registered.

NV Ramana’s plain-

right spirit for the sake of eas-
ing the burden on courts. “Non-
performance by the various
wings of the executive” and
“legislature not realizing its full
potential” was to blame for the
burden on courts, Justice Ra-
mana said. The CJI also includ-
ed PILs in this category as he
explained them to be personal
interest litigation. The govern-
ment being the biggest litigant,
the CJI said that if government
officials from the panchayat to
the state level discharge their
duties in accordance with the
law there will be fewer people
approaching the courts. Land
disputes alone account for 66
percent of cases pending in
courts, Justice Ramana said.
The CJI also emphasised that
the judiciary wouldn’t cross the
“Lakshman Rekha” if the other
two wings acted as per the law. It
is reasonable advice and the leg-
islature and executive should
give it a serious thought.

RISING GLOBAL TEMPERATURE
MIGHT KILL MILLIONS
ife is the creation of certain
specific environmental condi-
tions. When human activities
started destroying the envi-
ronment leading to the world
getting warmer, various
health hazards started taking
roots. As the concentrations
of carbon dioxide, methane
and other greenhouse gases
started their upward trend in
the atmosphere, extreme
weather events like storms,
heatwaves,floodsanddrought
became noticeable in differ-
ent parts of the world.
There are people who keep
a close watch on the impact of
climate changes on human
health. Older people are more
vulnerable to heat and vari-
ous diseases getting activated
because of higher atmospher-
ic temperature. The other
groupthatwouldbeadversely
affected is children.Malnutri-
tion, malaria and diarrhoea
may kill a large number of
children, especially in eco-
nomically backward coun-
tries. But the people of rich
countries shouldn’t feel elat-
ed as some different diseases
like Covid-19 might strike
them at frequent intervals.
The so-called development
will impact quality of air and
wateralongwithfoodwhichis
getting more and more laden
with chemicals. Activities like
construction of roads, dams,
industrialcomplexesetc.force
people to leave their villages
and this human displacement
takes its own toll. Rising tem-
peratureactivatesanumberof
diseasescarryingvectors,bac-
teria and viruses. As both the
displacement and rising tem-
perature do not cause large
number of death in a very
short time span like Covid-19,
they are being overlooked and
underestimated by people and
governments but the final
death rate and level of disabil-
ityisnolessthananypandem-
ic - this, actually
, can be called
a slow pandemic. It is in offi-
cial records that heatwaves
during 2004 caused additional
70,000 deaths in Europe. We
overlook such calamities be-
cause the death is spread over
alongerperiodof time.Deaths
in such calamities happen be-
cause of an increase in the
number of heart attacks and
other vascular diseases due to
heat along with particulate
pollution in air. Particulate
pollution impacts people hav-
ing asthma and chronic lung
diseases killing many of them
prematurely
.
Children below 4 years and
senior citizens above 80 are
particularly prone to suffer
kidneydiseasesastheclimate
gets warmer. This may be
caused by dehydration and
electrolyte imbalance. Warm
weather can also trigger vari-
ous infections like malaria
and yellow fever as the in-
creased breeding of mosqui-
toes leads to their massive
growth. When deforestation
happens, many wild animals
lose their habitat and start
movingtowardshumanpopu-
lation carrying many viruses
with them. When episodes of
famine and floods take place
then hunger forces human be-
ings to kill animals for food
which might release many
dormant viruses on human
beings resulting in severe
epidemics and big loss of life.
Coastal areas and many
low-lying islands may be
threatened due to rising sea
levels and it is getting more
and more probable that cities
like Jakarta, New Orleans
and Bangkok would be en-
gulfed by seawater in the not-
so-distant future. Indian
coastal city Mumbai may lose
a significant part of it to ris-
ing sea if the glaciers go on
melting. Powerful sea storms
and hurricanes may contam-
inate drinking water by forc-
ing seawater into aquifers.
The resultant waterborne
diseases would kill hundreds
of thousand people, especial-
ly children and elderly

New Delhi: In the last
20-25 years, many Con-
gress conventions and
contemplation camps
were held, but what
was the decision taken
in them and what was
implemented, even the
Congress leaders will
not have any idea. Even
now, there is a discus-
sion about Pachmarhi
and Shimla conven-
tions. Therefore, it is
meaningless to expect
that the Congress will
take a historic decision
at the Chintan Shivir to
be held in Udaipur in
May and march to-
wards victory from
there. That too will be a
routine conference, as
happened in Jaipur in
2013. But this time the
special thing will be
that the new pesident
of Congress will be de-
cided in this.
Keep in mind that the
election of Congress
president is going to be
held in August-Septem-
ber. Just before that, the
name of the new Presi-
dent of Congress will
be considered in the
Chintan Shivir to be
held in mid-May. The
Congress leaders are
more interested in de-
ciding the name of the
new president than de-
ciding an ideological
line or making an alter-
native agenda. It is be-
ing told that Rajasthan
Chief Minister Ashok
Gehlot, who is hosting
the Chintan Shivir, is
working on this line.
According to informed
sources, in the presence
of four hundred impor-
tant Congress leaders,
he can propose to make
Rahul Gandhi the na-
tional president of the
party. Remember, he
has been saying this in
the Congress Working
Committee meetings in
the past as well.
According to sources
in the Congress, an at-
tempt will be made to
reach a consensus on
the name of Rahul Gan-
dhi in the Chintan Shi-
vir and different state
committees can also
propose his name. It is
also being said that the
suggestions given by
election strategist
Prashant Kishor will
also be discussed in it.
But that discussion will
be a sham as the Con-
gress is trying to decide
whether Rahul Gandhi
should be made the
president, whereas
Prashant Kishor did not
suggest Rahul in any of
his three formulas.
Prashant Kishor’s
first suggestions was
that Sonia Gandhi
should be the Con-
gress President, Rahul
Gandhi should be
made the President of
the Parliamentary
Board, Priyanka Gan-
dhi Vadra should be-
come the General Sec-
retary of the Organi-
zation and any col-
league who had left
the Congress should
be made the President
of the UPA. The sec-
ond suggestion was
that someone from
outside the Nehru-
Gandhi family should
become the president,
Sonia should become
the UPA president, Ra-
hul should become the
president of the par-
liamentary board and
Priyanka should be-
come the general sec-
retary of the organiza-
tion. The third propos-
al was to make Priyan-
ka Gandhi Vadra the
president. Obviously,
Kishor was not in fa-
vor of making Rahul
Gandhi the president,
but contrary to his
suggestions, the Con-
gress is adamant on
making Rahul the par-
ty president at any
cost. And thus, this
‘wish’ of the ‘party’
can be stamped on in
the ‘chintan shivir’.

Tesla can benefit by

in India: Gadkari
New Delhi (PTI): Un-

highways minister Ni-
tin Gadkari on Mon-
day said that if the US-
based EV maker Tesla
manufactures its elec-
tric vehicles in India
then the company will
also get benefits.
Gadkari said days
are not very far when
the prices of all elec-

country. “Agar Tesla

Earlier on April 26,
Gadkari had said, if

pany must not import
cars from China.
“If Elon Musk is

.
The incremental
credit to GDP share
was as high as 63% in
the pre-pandemic year
(FY19). The average
share was 50% for the
seven-year period end-

A higher credit-to-

lower number shows
the need for more for-

“For FY23, we be-

increasing role of
banks in economic
growth,” the report,

FY22 ended with an

crucial meeting of the US Federal Reserve this

A weak rupee and persistent foreign fund
outflows further weighed on bourses, though
encouraging domestic macroeco-

India’s power consumption grows
13.6% to 132.98 bn units in April
New Delhi (PTI):
Power consumption in
the country grew
13.6% Y-o-Y to 132.98
billion units (BU) in
April, showing the im-
pact of the early onset
of summers and spurt
in economic activities.
Power consumption
in April last year was
recorded at 117.08 BU,
which was higher than
84.55 BU in the same
month of 2020.
On the other hand,
the peak power de-
mand met, which is the
highest supply in a day
,
during April this year
remained at an all-
time high of 207.11 GW.
The peak power supply
stood at 182.37 GW in
April 2021 and 132.73
GW in April 2020.
The power consump-
tion and demand were
affected in April 2020
also due to the imposi-
tion of lockdown.
Experts are of the
view that power con-
sumption and demand
rose unprecedentedly
mainly because of the

Nashik (PTI): Hitting
out at MNS president
Raj Thackeray over his
demand to remove loud-
speakers from mosques,
Maharashtra Deputy
Chief Minister Ajit Pa-
war on Monday assert-
ed there is no dictator-
ship in the state, where
the rule of law will
prevail.
Pawar’s tough stand
came a day after Raj
Thackeray addressed a
rally where he adopted
an aggressive posture
over his demand to re-
move loudspeakers atop
mosques by May 3, in
the process throwing a
challenge to the admin-
istration and police.
Without taking
Thackeray’s name, Pa-
war said inciting people
is easy but the outcomes
of it will be disturbing
the social harmony in
Maharashtra, which the
state cannot afford.
“Dictatorship won’t
be allowed in Maha-
rashtra. No one can
given an ultimatum.
There is rule of law
here and law is equal
for all,” Pawar said
when asked about the
MNS chief’s May 3 ulti-
matum on the issue of
mosque loudspeakers.
At the Sunday rally in
Aurangabad in the
state’s Marathwada re-
gion, Raj Thackeray had
said he was firm on the
May 3 deadline for re-
moval of loudspeakers,
which he termed as a
nuisance,frommosques,
and added that if it was
not done, then all Hin-
dus should play Hanu-
man Chalisa outside
these religious places.
The MNS leader had
said during his speech
that the the Muslim
community would see
the “power of Maha-
rashtra” if they did
not understand the re-
quest on loudspeakers
“nicely”.
“I won’t be responsi-
ble for what all happens
after the May 3 deadline
to remove loudspeakers
from mosques,” Thack-
eray had said.
Pawar said everyone
has to follow law.
“If anyone thinks
things will happen as
per him, then that will
not happen. Everyone
has to abide by law and
the Constitution,” the
Deputy CM said.
Whatever decision is
taken, it has to be appli-
cable to everyone. Only
loudspeakers atop
mosques (will be re-
moved) and others will
not be touched (such a
thing) will not happen,
Pawar added.
The NCP leader said
action will be taken if
rules were flouted dur-
ing the rally
, adding that
the police machinery
would do its work to
maintain law and order.
Pawar slammed Raj
Thackeray for claiming
NCP chief Sharad Pa-
war indulged in caste
politics, adding the
MNS leader’s speeches
change as per times and
his whims.

Sabha poll campaign,

speak against the BJP,
the Deputy CM pointed

Ranchi: Jharkhand’s
maiden wildlife rescue
centre, which is under
construction at Barwe
village near here, is
ready to house rescued
bears, deer, monkeys,
and leopards, officials
said on Monday
.
Some of the facilities
are ready which have
been made operational
for a few animals, Prin-
cipal Chief Conservator
of Forest (wildlife), Ash-
ish Rawat said.
The proposed ar-
rangements for rescued
elephants and hyenas
are due for completion
in 2022-23 fiscal, the of-
ficials said.
The rescue centre is
being built on a sprawl-
ing area of 100 acres on
Ormanjhi-Boriyo road,
22 km from here, and it
is expected to be com-
pleted by 2024.
It has already been
approved by the Cen-
tral Zoo Authority
(CZA), the officials
said. The centre is un-
der construction, and
the infrastructure re-
quired for rescued ani-
mals is being devel-
oped, Rawat said.
On Sunday, two sloth
bears were taken to the
centre after the animals
were rescued from the
state’s Bokaro district.
Six months ago, a res-
cuedlangurwasbrought
to the centre.
Ranchi’s Divisional
Forest Officer (DFO) for
Wildlife, Umesh Saha-
ni, who is looking after
the rescue centre, told
PTI, The moat for bears
on 40 decimal area is
ready. A few more im-
provements will be car-
ried out this year.” The
sloth bears, which were
rescued from Bokaro,
have been kept in the
moat, and they are be-
ing given healthy and
nutritious food under
the observation of
Ranchi Zoo’s veterinary
doctor Om Prakash
Sahu, the DFO said.
The enclosures for
monkeys and deer are
also ready
, he said. Con-
struction of the rescue
centre began in 2018-19
fiscal and around Rs 8
crore has been spent on
the project, he said.
A hospital for ani-
mals, a godown, and fa-
cilities like water and
electricity supply have
already been completed.
However, the centre
lacks dedicated veteri-
narians and a rescue
team, a trained work-
force, and vehicles with
cage facilities.
Besides, Jharkhand
does not have any dedi-
cated team for rescuing
animals, experts said.

Colombo (PTI): Sri
Lanka’s former prime
minister Ranil Wick-
remesinghe has said
that political leaders
should focus on seeking
financial assistance
from a number of coun-
tries, including India
and China, to get the
debt-ridden island na-
tion out of its worst eco-
nomic crisis rather
than worrying about
securing a working ma-
jority in Parliament.
Addressing the Unit-
ed National Party’s
(UNP) Jathika Sevaka
Sangamaya May Day
ceremony at New Town
Hall in Colombo on
Sunday, Wickremesing-
he said the government
led by President Gota-
baya Rajapaksa should
give priority to resolv-
ing the ongoing eco-
nomic crisis and take
immediate action to
control the prices of es-
sential goods.
“It should pay atten-
tion to saving the bank-
ing system from col-
lapsing. It should. We
saw how the banking
sector collapsed in
Greece and the same
happened in Indonesia
in 1998. The govern-
ment should speak to
India, China, Japan and
South Korea to seek
help, he said.
Having 113 MPs in
Parliament is no longer
the solution for the pre-
sent problem. The coun-
try is facing an econom-
ic crisis of unprece-
dented proportion, he
was quoted as saying by
The Island newspaper.
Sri Lanka is in the
grip of an unprecedent-
ed economic turmoil
since its independence
from Britain in 1948.
The crisis is caused in
part by a lack of foreign
currency, which has
meant that the country
cannot afford to pay for
imports of staple foods
and fuel, leading to
acute shortages and
very high prices.
Months of lengthy
blackouts and acute
shortages of food, fuel
and pharmaceuticals
have triggered wide-
spread protests calling
for the government’s
resignation.
“The national econo-
my has almost col-
lapsed. Agriculture is
in death throes without
fertilisers. Fishers have
no diesel. Many have
lost their jobs. Compa-
nies are downsizing at
the expense of their
workers. Some have al-
ready been closed down.
Thousands of more jobs
are likely to be lost,”
Wickremesinghe said.
“Medium scale enter-
prises have collapsed
and small-scale enter-
prises are facing the
same predicament. The
value of money depos-
ited in the banks has
been lost by around 50
per cent. The value of
the savings in the EPF
and ETF has decreased
by around 50 per cent.
There are protests and
demonstrations all over
the country. People are
asking the government
to go home. The govern-
ment has lost its man-
dates received at the
2019 and 2020 elections,”
he said.
The former premier
said instead of giving
priority to resolving the
current economic cri-
sis, the government was
divided on whether
President Gotabaya or
his elder brother and
Prime Minister Mahin-
da Rajapaksa should
quit.
“The prevailing prob-
lems cannot be solved
by mustering 113 seats
in Parliament. The
problem, however,
could be solved. For
that purpose, income
taxes have to be in-
creased. Fuel prices and
electricity prices would
have to be increased.
The value of the US
dollar which was at Rs.
185 rupees is likely to
reach Rs 400. Therefore,
government expenses
have to be cut down. In
the meantime, the gov-
ernment should talk to
the international com-
munity to secure its as-
sistance, he said.

Chandigarh (PTI):
The Punjab and Har-

Monday stayed the
arrest of former AAP
leader Kumar Vish-

against Delhi CM
Arvind Kejriwal,
terming it a fit case to
prevent the “abuse of

Vishwas was
booked by the Rupna-

after the complainant
in the case alleged
that he and AAP sup-
porters were called
Khalistani. The com-
plaint claimed that
the incident took
place on April 12 af-
ter Vishwas made the
remarks, accusing
Kejriwal of support-
ing separatists.
Vishwas had
moved the High
Court last week, seek-
ing the quashing of
the FIR registered
against him.
The court in its or-
der observed that the
penal provisions un-
der which the peti-
tioner stands ar-
raigned are not pri-
ma facie made out
against him.
“The submission
that the FIR is politi-
cally motivated can-
not be ruled out,” the

counsels for Vishwas
said the court of Jus-
tice Anoop Chitkara
fixed July 4 as the

.
According to airport
sources, the incident
was reported at 9 am
when an Army man be-

New Delhi (PTI): Delhi
Deputy CM Manish

leged that officials of
the BJP-led municipal
corporations have been
working to bring CSR
fund for a smart class-
room project of an NGO
reportedly run by peo-
ple close to the party’s
city unit chief, in a
“novel way of indulging

to raise funds trough
CSR, and hand it over to
an NGO, for a smart

Raj CM Gehlot to people: Use power
judiciously as demand up by 35%
Jaipur (PTI): Ra-
jasthan Chief Minister
Ashok Gehlot on Mon-
day urged people to cut
down on electricity con-
sumption, saying the
demand for it has shot
up by 35% and no addi-
tional power is availa-
ble with the Indian En-
ergy Exchange.
The CM said the state
is no exception as the
entire country is facing
a power crisis due to the
early onset of the heat-
wave. He also appealed
to people to avoid using
air conditioners unnec-
essarily. “The gap be-
tween demand and sup-
ply has widened. Elec-
tricity is also not avail-
able for purchase from
the Indian Energy Ex-
change,” the CM tweet-
ed.
Gehlot said he state
government is trying
its best to ensure ade-
quate availability of
water.
“There is an appeal to
all of you to make lim-
ited and judicious use
of electricity and wa-
ter,” he said.
Gehlot said the de-
mand for electricity has
increased to 35% due to
severe heat conditions
and power cuts from
two to 10 hours are be-
ing imposed in 16 states
of the country
.
In Rajasthan, power
cuts are being imposed
in rural and urban are-
as as per the roster sys-
tem. However, essential
services have been com-
pletely exempted from
power cuts, he said.
Scientists discover pathways to
severe COVID-19 in children
Melbourne (PTI): Re-
searchers have discov-
ered the pathways that
are activated in severe
cases of COVID-19 in
children, an advance
that can lead to earlier
diagnosis and more tar-
geted treatments for the
disease.
The study, published
in the journal Nature
Communications, iden-
tified disease mecha-
nisms in children with
COVID-19 who present
with multisystem in-
flammatory syndrome,
where different body
parts can become in-
flamed including the
heart, lungs, and brain
and acute respiratory
distress syndrome, a
type of lung disease.
The main triggers for
severe COVID-19 in chil-
dren were blood clot-
ting and how proteins
in the immune system
reacted to the virus, the
researchers said.
For the study, blood
samples from 20 healthy
children were collected
and samples from 33
SARS-CoV-2 infected
children with multisys-
tem inflammatory syn-
drome or acute respira-
tory distress syndrome
were collected.
The research found
85 and 52 proteins were
specific to multisystem
inflammatory syn-
drome and acute res-
piratory distress syn-
drome, respectively.
Both syndromes are
major potential out-
comes of severe COV-
ID-19. Data shows 1.7%
of reported paediatric
hospitalised cases of
COVID-19.

  • 1. No one can be forced to take vaccine, rules Supreme Court New Delhi (Agencies): No one can be forced to take the vaccine, the Su- preme Court ruled on Monday in a landmark decision on India’s Cov- id vaccine policy, also directing the central government to publish reports on the adverse effects of vaccination. “Bodily integrity is protected under the law and nobody can be forced to be vaccinat- ed,” the Supreme Court said. The court assert- ed, however, that “cer- tain limitations on indi- vidual rights” could be imposed in the interest of community health. “Barring Covid-ap- propriate behaviour, we suggest no curbs on un- vaccinated individuals in access to public plac- es, services and re- sources if cases are low,” the Court said. Restrictions imposed on individuals through vaccine mandates can- not be called to be pro- portionate, the court said - a refence to many states making it essen- tial for people to get the Covid shot to access public places. “Till in- fection numbers are low we suggest that no restriction is imposed on individuals on ac- cess to public places, services and resources. Recall the same if al- ready done,” the Su- preme Court ordered. Supreme Court Jus- tices LN Rao and BR Ga- vai added that their di- rectivesdidnotextendto Covid-appropriate be- haviour, but was limited to vaccines in the “rap- idly evolving situation”. The Supreme Court also directed the Centre to publish reports on adverse events of vac- cines from people and doctors on a publicly ac- cessible system, with- out compromising the details of the individu- als reporting them. “Regarding segrega- tion of vaccine trial data, subject to the pri- vacy of individuals, all trials already conduct- ed and to be subse- quently conducted, all data must be made available to the public without further delay,” the court said. A petition by Jacob Puliyel, a former mem- ber of the National Technical Advisory GrouponImmunisation (NTAGI), had argued that states mandating vaccination for access- ing benefits or services is a violation of citizens’ rights, and therefore, unconstitutional. Bishnoi has let his an- ger public and said that he will seek a response from the party . The internal rift in the Haryana Congress has widened after Con- gress General Secre- tary Randeep Surjewa- la came out openly in support of Kuldeep Bishnoi. Did it consider the situ- ation in Corona and dis- cuss measures to pre- vent a possible new wave? Nothing like this happen because most states do not have coro- na cases. Many states have become complete- ly free from Corona. In Uttar Pradesh too, new cases have increased in the districts adjacent to NCR. In Haryana also only in the districts ad- jacent to NCR have wit- nessed a rise. Apart from Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Ker- ala, most of the states have either no cases or few cases. That is why it was as- tonishing that the Prime Minister called a meeting of Chief Min- isters of all the states over Corona. By law, the meeting of the Prime Minister should have been held with the Chief Ministers of three or four states. It has happened many times in the past that the Prime Minister held a meeting with the Chief Ministers of the states where there were more cases. But this time the Chief Minis- ters of all the states and the Lieutenant Gover- nors and Administra- tors of the Union Ter- ritories were called, and that is why , it seems that PM’s aim was to put the states in the dock regarding VAT on petrol and diesel. And one has to admit that it was a job well done. Now the state gov- ernments and the lead- ers of the opposition parties are giving clari- fication and asking the Center to reduce the tax, but the Prime Min- ister has sent the mes- sage to the people that the state governments with the opposition par- ties have not given re- lief to the common peo- ple by cutting VAT, while the Center And BJP ruled states gave relief. The CJI also includ- ed PILs in this category as he explained them to be personal interest litigation. The govern- ment being the biggest litigant, the CJI said that if government officials from the panchayat to the state level discharge their duties in accordance with the law there will be fewer people approaching the courts. Land disputes alone account for 66 percent of cases pending in courts, Justice Ramana said. The CJI also emphasised that the judiciary wouldn’t cross the “Lakshman Rekha” if the other two wings acted as per the law. It is reasonable advice and the leg- islature and executive should give it a serious thought. C ndians and Indian Americans in the US are among the highly educated and affluent cate- gory . One can celebrate Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav in the 75th year of Independence but alsobearinmindthatcasteist slurs and discriminations still mark the Hindu society . What’s strange is that we talk of Hindu caste hierarchy but forget, or are ignorant, about the caste system among Muslims who have Ashrafs, the original Muslims, at the top of the ladder. Below them are “low-born” Ajlaf, the Hin- du converts. At the lowest end are the Dalit converts called Arzal, meaning vile. When human activities started destroying the envi- ronment leading to the world getting warmer, various health hazards started taking roots. As the concentrations of carbon dioxide, methane and other greenhouse gases started their upward trend in the atmosphere, extreme weather events like storms, heatwaves, floodsanddrought became noticeable in differ- ent parts of the world. There are people who keep a close watch on the impact of climate changes on human health. Older people are more vulnerable to heat and vari- ous diseases getting activated because of higher atmospher- ic temperature. The other groupthatwouldbeadversely affected is children.Malnutri- tion, malaria and diarrhoea may kill a large number of children, especially in eco- nomically backward coun- tries. But the people of rich countries shouldn’t feel elat- ed as some different diseases like Covid-19 might strike them at frequent intervals. The so-called development will impact quality of air and wateralongwithfoodwhichis getting more and more laden with chemicals. Activities like construction of roads, dams, industrialcomplexesetc.force people to leave their villages and this human displacement takes its own toll. Rising tem- peratureactivatesanumberof diseasescarryingvectors,bac- teria and viruses. As both the displacement and rising tem- perature do not cause large number of death in a very short time span like Covid-19, they are being overlooked and underestimated by people and governments but the final death rate and level of disabil- ityisnolessthananypandem- ic - this, actually , can be called a slow pandemic. It is in offi- cial records that heatwaves during 2004 caused additional 70,000 deaths in Europe. We overlook such calamities be- cause the death is spread over alongerperiodof time.Deaths in such calamities happen be- cause of an increase in the number of heart attacks and other vascular diseases due to heat along with particulate pollution in air. Particulate pollution impacts people hav- ing asthma and chronic lung diseases killing many of them prematurely . Children below 4 years and senior citizens above 80 are particularly prone to suffer kidneydiseasesastheclimate gets warmer. This may be caused by dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. Warm weather can also trigger vari- ous infections like malaria and yellow fever as the in- creased breeding of mosqui- toes leads to their massive growth. When deforestation happens, many wild animals lose their habitat and start movingtowardshumanpopu- lation carrying many viruses with them. When episodes of famine and floods take place then hunger forces human be- ings to kill animals for food which might release many dormant viruses on human beings resulting in severe epidemics and big loss of life. Coastal areas and many low-lying islands may be threatened due to rising sea levels and it is getting more and more probable that cities like Jakarta, New Orleans and Bangkok would be en- gulfed by seawater in the not- so-distant future. Indian coastal city Mumbai may lose a significant part of it to ris- ing sea if the glaciers go on melting. Powerful sea storms and hurricanes may contam- inate drinking water by forc- ing seawater into aquifers. The resultant waterborne diseases would kill hundreds of thousand people, especial- ly children and elderly . INDIA NEW DELHI | TUESDAY, MAY 3, 2022 05 www.firstindia.co.in I www.firstindia.co.in/epapers/delhi I twitter.com/thefirstindia I facebook.com/thefirstindia I instagram.com/thefirstindia Sharat K Verma New Delhi: In the last 20-25 years, many Con- gress conventions and contemplation camps were held, but what was the decision taken in them and what was implemented, even the Congress leaders will not have any idea. Even now, there is a discus- sion about Pachmarhi and Shimla conven- tions. Therefore, it is meaningless to expect that the Congress will take a historic decision at the Chintan Shivir to be held in Udaipur in May and march to- wards victory from there. That too will be a routine conference, as happened in Jaipur in 2013. But this time the special thing will be that the new pesident of Congress will be de- cided in this. Keep in mind that the election of Congress president is going to be held in August-Septem- ber. Just before that, the name of the new Presi- dent of Congress will be considered in the Chintan Shivir to be held in mid-May. The Congress leaders are more interested in de- ciding the name of the new president than de- ciding an ideological line or making an alter- native agenda. It is be- ing told that Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, who is hosting the Chintan Shivir, is working on this line. According to informed sources, in the presence of four hundred impor- tant Congress leaders, he can propose to make Rahul Gandhi the na- tional president of the party. Remember, he has been saying this in the Congress Working Committee meetings in the past as well. According to sources in the Congress, an at- tempt will be made to reach a consensus on the name of Rahul Gan- dhi in the Chintan Shi- vir and different state committees can also propose his name. It is also being said that the suggestions given by election strategist Prashant Kishor will also be discussed in it. But that discussion will be a sham as the Con- gress is trying to decide whether Rahul Gandhi should be made the president, whereas Prashant Kishor did not suggest Rahul in any of his three formulas. Prashant Kishor’s first suggestions was that Sonia Gandhi should be the Con- gress President, Rahul Gandhi should be made the President of the Parliamentary Board, Priyanka Gan- dhi Vadra should be- come the General Sec- retary of the Organi- zation and any col- league who had left the Congress should be made the President of the UPA. The sec- ond suggestion was that someone from outside the Nehru- Gandhi family should become the president, Sonia should become the UPA president, Ra- hul should become the president of the par- liamentary board and Priyanka should be- come the general sec- retary of the organiza- tion. The third propos- al was to make Priyan- ka Gandhi Vadra the president. Obviously, Kishor was not in fa- vor of making Rahul Gandhi the president, but contrary to his suggestions, the Con- gress is adamant on making Rahul the par- ty president at any cost. And thus, this ‘wish’ of the ‘party’ can be stamped on in the ‘chintan shivir’. Congress’ new president to be decided in Chintan Shivir! The seasonally adjusted SP Global India Manufactur- ing Pur- c h a s i n g Managers’ Index(PMI) rose from 54.0 in March to 54.7 in April, as a re- treat of COVID-19 restrictions continued to support demand. The April PMI data pointed to an improve- ment in overall operat- ing conditions for the tenth straight month. I n PMI p a r - lance, a print above 50 means expansion, while a score below 50 denotes contraction. “The Indian manu- facturing PMI re- mained well inside positive territory dur- ing April, recovering some of the ground lost in March. Facto- ries continued to scale up production at an above-trend pace, with the ongoing increases in sales and input pur- chasing, suggesting that growth will be sus- tained in the near- term,” said Pollyanna De Lima, Economics Associate Director at SP Global. April data showed a rebound in new export orders, following the first contraction for nine months in March. The rate of increase was solid and the strongest since last July . Inflationary pres- sures meanwhile in- tensified, owing to ris- ing commodity prices. India’s factory activity quickens in April Incremental credit-to- GDPsharemaytop50% Tesla can benefit by manufacturing EVs in India: Gadkari New Delhi (PTI): Un- ion road transport and highways minister Ni- tin Gadkari on Mon- day said that if the US- based EV maker Tesla manufactures its elec- tric vehicles in India then the company will also get benefits. Gadkari said days are not very far when the prices of all elec- tric vehicles will be less than the cost of petrol vehicles in the country. “Agar Tesla India me electric car manufacture karega toh unka bhi fayda hoga (If Tesla manu- factures its electric vehicles in India then they will also get ben- efits),” he said. Earlier on April 26, Gadkari had said, if Tesla is ready to man- ufacture its EVs in In- dia then there is ‘no problem’, but the com- pany must not import cars from China. “If Elon Musk is ready to manufacture in India then there is no problem ... Come to India, start manufac- turing, India is a large market, they can ex- port from India,” he had said. Last year, the ministry had also asked Tesla to first start manufacturing its iconic electric vehi- cles in India before any tax concessions can be considered. Mumbai (PTI): The share of incremental bank credit in incre- mental nominal GDP is likely to cross the 50% mark in the cur- rent financial year, from a decade low of 27% in FY2022, an SBI research report said on Monday . The incremental credit to GDP share was as high as 63% in the pre-pandemic year (FY19). The average share was 50% for the seven-year period end- ed FY20. A higher credit-to- GDP ratio indicates aggressive and active participation of the banking sector in the real economy, while a lower number shows the need for more for- mal credit. “For FY23, we be- lieve that the share of bank credit may again breach the 50 per cent mark indicating the increasing role of banks in economic growth,” the report, Ecowrap, said. In the fiscal ended 2021-22, banks’ credit grew by 9.6%, driven by all major sectors. FY22 ended with an incremental credit growth at `10.5 lakh crore, 1.8 times higher than growth of `5.8 lakh crore in FY21, the report said. Gadkari pitches for priority sector lending New Delhi (PTI): Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Monday made a case for ex- tending priority sec- tor lending facilities for entities engaged in production and business of alterna- tive fuels like bio- ethanol, CNG and LNG, a move that will help cut imports of fossil fuels. Addressing an event here, the Road Transport and High- ways Minister fur- ther said the trial of bringing calorific value of ethanol at par with petrol by In- dian Oil Corporation (IOC) was successful. “Those involved in production or busi- ness of alternative fuels should be in- cluded in priority sector lending. I shall speak about the issue with the finance min- ister and RBI Gover- nor,” he said. Sensex slips for 2nd day Mumbai (PTI): Equities remained under pres- sure for the second session running on Monday as investors stayed on the sidelines ahead of a crucial meeting of the US Federal Reserve this week where it is expected to go for an aggressive rate hike to tame runaway inflation. A weak rupee and persistent foreign fund outflows further weighed on bourses, though encouraging domestic macroeco- nomic data like all-time high GST collections and strong manufac- turing PMI cushioned the fall. After plunging over 600 points in intra-day trade, the 30-share BSE Sensex re- couped most losses to end 84.88 points or 0.15% low- er at 56,975.99. On similar lines, the broader NSE Nifty shed 33.45 points or 0.20% to close at 17,069.10. At the interbank for- eign exchange market, the rupee opened slight- ly higher at 76.48 against the American dollar and gained fur- ther ground to trade at 76.35. It oscillated be- tween a high of 76.35 and a low of 76.51 dur- ing the session. Power consumption in April last year was recorded at 117.08 BU, which was higher than 84.55 BU in the same month of 2020. On the other hand, the peak power de- mand met, which is the highest supply in a day , during April this year remained at an all- time high of 207.11 GW. The peak power supply stood at 182.37 GW in April 2021 and 132.73 GW in April 2020. The power consump- tion and demand were affected in April 2020 also due to the imposi- tion of lockdown. Experts are of the view that power con- sumption and demand rose unprecedentedly mainly because of the early onset of sum- mers and showed that greater economic ac- tivities are pushing commercial and indus- trial requirements of electricity . Fresh housing supply rises 43% across 6 cities in Jan-Mar New Delhi (PTI): Fresh housing supply rose 43% quarter-on- quarter across six cit- ies during January- March to around 80,000 units, mainly driven by a revival in the demand for residential proper- ties, acc to proptech firm Square Yards. CIL’s coal supply to power sector rises 16% in April New Delhi (PTI): State-owned CIL on Monday said coal sup- ply to the power sector rose 15.6% to 49.7 mil- lion tonne last month in the wake of high demand of the dry fuel from electricity gener- ating plants and stressed that it is plan- ning to augment its dispatches further, es- pecially to power plants in the coming months. The statement comes at a time when several parts of the country are grappling with power crisis. This is 6.7 MT more supply compared to April’21 when the pow- er sector’s dispatch was 43 MTs,” the ma- haratna firm said. With higher output, CIL is aiming to in- crease its dispatches further, especially to power plants in the coming months. Coal India, which accounts for over 80% of domestic coal out- put, is one of the ma- jor suppliers of fossil fuel to the power sec- tor. The coal production by the PSU also rose 27.6% to 53.5 MT last month over 41.9 MT in April 2021. Pawar’s tough stand came a day after Raj Thackeray addressed a rally where he adopted an aggressive posture over his demand to re- move loudspeakers atop mosques by May 3, in the process throwing a challenge to the admin- istration and police. Without taking Thackeray’s name, Pa- war said inciting people is easy but the outcomes of it will be disturbing the social harmony in Maharashtra, which the state cannot afford. “Dictatorship won’t be allowed in Maha- rashtra. No one can given an ultimatum. There is rule of law here and law is equal for all,” Pawar said when asked about the MNS chief’s May 3 ulti- matum on the issue of mosque loudspeakers. At the Sunday rally in Aurangabad in the state’s Marathwada re- gion, Raj Thackeray had said he was firm on the May 3 deadline for re- moval of loudspeakers, which he termed as a nuisance, frommosques, and added that if it was not done, then all Hin- dus should play Hanu- man Chalisa outside these religious places. The MNS leader had said during his speech that the the Muslim community would see the “power of Maha- rashtra” if they did not understand the re- quest on loudspeakers “nicely”. “I won’t be responsi- ble for what all happens after the May 3 deadline to remove loudspeakers from mosques,” Thack- eray had said. Pawar said everyone has to follow law. “If anyone thinks things will happen as per him, then that will not happen. Everyone has to abide by law and the Constitution,” the Deputy CM said. Whatever decision is taken, it has to be appli- cable to everyone. Only loudspeakers atop mosques (will be re- moved) and others will not be touched (such a thing) will not happen, Pawar added. The NCP leader said action will be taken if rules were flouted dur- ing the rally , adding that the police machinery would do its work to maintain law and order. Pawar slammed Raj Thackeray for claiming NCP chief Sharad Pa- war indulged in caste politics, adding the MNS leader’s speeches change as per times and his whims. Addressing the Unit- ed National Party’s (UNP) Jathika Sevaka Sangamaya May Day ceremony at New Town Hall in Colombo on Sunday, Wickremesing- he said the government led by President Gota- baya Rajapaksa should give priority to resolv- ing the ongoing eco- nomic crisis and take immediate action to control the prices of es- sential goods. “It should pay atten- tion to saving the bank- ing system from col- lapsing. It should. We saw how the banking sector collapsed in Greece and the same happened in Indonesia in 1998. The govern- ment should speak to India, China, Japan and South Korea to seek help, he said. Having 113 MPs in Parliament is no longer the solution for the pre- sent problem. The coun- try is facing an econom- ic crisis of unprece- dented proportion, he was quoted as saying by The Island newspaper. Sri Lanka is in the grip of an unprecedent- ed economic turmoil since its independence from Britain in 1948. The crisis is caused in part by a lack of foreign currency, which has meant that the country cannot afford to pay for imports of staple foods and fuel, leading to acute shortages and very high prices. Months of lengthy blackouts and acute shortages of food, fuel and pharmaceuticals have triggered wide- spread protests calling for the government’s resignation. “The national econo- my has almost col- lapsed. Agriculture is in death throes without fertilisers. Fishers have no diesel. Many have lost their jobs. Compa- nies are downsizing at the expense of their workers. Some have al- ready been closed down. Thousands of more jobs are likely to be lost,” Wickremesinghe said. “Medium scale enter- prises have collapsed and small-scale enter- prises are facing the same predicament. The value of money depos- ited in the banks has been lost by around 50 per cent. The value of the savings in the EPF and ETF has decreased by around 50 per cent. There are protests and demonstrations all over the country. People are asking the government to go home. The govern- ment has lost its man- dates received at the 2019 and 2020 elections,” he said. The former premier said instead of giving priority to resolving the current economic cri- sis, the government was divided on whether President Gotabaya or his elder brother and Prime Minister Mahin- da Rajapaksa should quit. “The prevailing prob- lems cannot be solved by mustering 113 seats in Parliament. The problem, however, could be solved. For that purpose, income taxes have to be in- creased. Fuel prices and electricity prices would have to be increased. The value of the US dollar which was at Rs. 185 rupees is likely to reach Rs 400. Therefore, government expenses have to be cut down. In the meantime, the gov- ernment should talk to the international com- munity to secure its as- sistance, he said. TOP PRIORITY Punjab Haryana HC stays arrest of Kumar Vishwas Chandigarh (PTI): The Punjab and Har- yana High court on Monday stayed the arrest of former AAP leader Kumar Vish- was over “inflamma- tory statements” against Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, terming it a fit case to prevent the “abuse of the process of law”. Vishwas was booked by the Rupna- gar police in Punjab after the complainant in the case alleged that he and AAP sup- porters were called Khalistani. The com- plaint claimed that the incident took place on April 12 af- ter Vishwas made the remarks, accusing Kejriwal of support- ing separatists. Vishwas had moved the High Court last week, seek- ing the quashing of the FIR registered against him. The court in its or- der observed that the penal provisions un- der which the peti- tioner stands ar- raigned are not pri- ma facie made out against him. “The submission that the FIR is politi- cally motivated can- not be ruled out,” the HC said. Mayank Ag- garwal, one of the counsels for Vishwas said the court of Jus- tice Anoop Chitkara fixed July 4 as the next date of hearing. COMPLAINT Chadha, two other AAP leaders take oath as RS MPs New Delhi: Aam Aad- mi Party leaders Ra- ghav Chadha, Ashok Kumar Mittal and San- jeev Arora on Monday took oath as their par- ty’s Rajya Sabha mem- bers from Punjab. Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu ad- ministered the oath to the newly-elected AAP members of Rajya Sab- ha in his chamber at Parliament House. All the three AAP leaders were elected un- opposed from Punjab in March as no other po- litical party had nomi- nated any candidate the state for the Rajya Sab- ha elections. Naidu advised the new members to go through various publi- cations, including ‘Ra- jya Sabha at Work’, ‘Practice and Procedure of Parliament’, the ‘Members Handbook’, ‘Rule Book’ among oth- ers to enable them to become conversant with the procedures of the House and enrich their knowledge about its functioning. While Chadha is a senior leader of the AAP, Mittal is the founder of Phagwara- based Lovely Profes- sional University (LPU). The CM said the state is no exception as the entire country is facing a power crisis due to the early onset of the heat- wave. He also appealed to people to avoid using air conditioners unnec- essarily. “The gap be- tween demand and sup- ply has widened. Elec- tricity is also not avail- able for purchase from the Indian Energy Ex- change,” the CM tweet- ed. Gehlot said he state government is trying its best to ensure ade- quate availability of water. “There is an appeal to all of you to make lim- ited and judicious use of electricity and wa- ter,” he said. Gehlot said the de- mand for electricity has increased to 35% due to severe heat conditions and power cuts from two to 10 hours are be- ing imposed in 16 states of the country . In Rajasthan, power cuts are being imposed in rural and urban are- as as per the roster sys- tem. However, essential services have been com- pletely exempted from power cuts, he said. Scientists discover pathways to severe COVID-19 in children Melbourne (PTI): Re- searchers have discov- ered the pathways that are activated in severe cases of COVID-19 in children, an advance that can lead to earlier diagnosis and more tar- geted treatments for the disease. The study, published in the journal Nature Communications, iden- tified disease mecha- nisms in children with COVID-19 who present with multisystem in- flammatory syndrome, where different body parts can become in- flamed including the heart, lungs, and brain and acute respiratory distress syndrome, a type of lung disease. The main triggers for severe COVID-19 in chil- dren were blood clot- ting and how proteins in the immune system reacted to the virus, the researchers said. For the study, blood samples from 20 healthy children were collected and samples from 33 SARS-CoV-2 infected children with multisys- tem inflammatory syn- drome or acute respira- tory distress syndrome were collected. The research found 85 and 52 proteins were specific to multisystem inflammatory syn- drome and acute res- piratory distress syn- drome, respectively. Both syndromes are major potential out- comes of severe COV- ID-19. Data shows 1.7% of reported paediatric hospitalised cases of COVID-19.
