During the 1970s and 1980s, manufacturers began using electronic engine controls to meet EPA emission standards. The OBD-II standard introduced in the mid-1990s provides nearly complete engine control and all cars built since 1996 have OBD-II systems. The ELM327 is a microcontroller that translates the OBD interface in most modern cars and allows diagnostic tools and computer programs to connect via USB, Bluetooth, or Wi-Fi to access sensor and engine data.
