Lipid bilayers, which form cell membranes, can only be synthesized by biological organisms. It is believed that the internal compartments of eukaryotic cells, like organelles, developed from invaginations of the external prokaryotic cell membrane. Abiogenesis hypothesizes that life exists throughout the universe and was distributed to Earth via meteorites and asteroids, bringing extremophile bacteria trapped in debris. However, abiogenesis proposes that life arose from non-living organic compounds on Earth, not bacteria from space.
