2. Types of Sentences
Sentence:
“A group of words which follows certain grammatical rules and makes complete sense is called a
sentence.”
Types of Sentence:
On Basis of Function:
There are five types of sentences on basis of function.
i. Declarative/Assertive Sentence
ii. Interrogative Sentence
iii. Imperative Sentence
iv. Exclamatory Sentence
v. Optative Sentence
1-Declarative/Assertive Sentence:
“An assertive sentence is a sentence that states a fact. Such sentences are simple
statements. They state, assert or declare something.”
Examples:
a) Wisdom is better than strength.
b) Never tell a lie.
c) Always speak the truth.
2-Interrogative Sentences:
“A sentence that asks a question is called interrogative sentences.”
Examples:
a) Why are your clothes so wet?
b) Have you decided what to do?
c) Why do you want to sell your motorbike?
3-Imperative Sentences:
“A sentence that expresses a compound or an entreaty is called imperative
sentences.”

a) Make less noise.
b) Be careful.
c) Don’t eat my chocolates.
4-ExclamatorySentences:
“A sentence that expresses a strong feeling is called an exclamatory sentence.”
Examples:
a) Ouch, that really hurts!
b) Brilliant, you solved the puzzle!
c) I can’t believe it!
5-Optative Sentences:
“The optative is a category of sentence that expresses a wish, hope or desire.”
Examples:
a) May your all wishes come true!
b) May you always be happy!
c) May all your troubles be small!
On Basis of Structure:
There are four types of sentence on the basis of structure.
i. Simple Sentences
ii. Compound Sentences
iii. Complex Sentences
iv. Compound-Complex Sentences
1-Simple Sentences:
“A simple sentence is one which has only one subject and one predicate.”
OR
“A simple sentence is one which has just one independent clause (Main Clause).”
Examples:
a) I went to the beach.

4. b) I will shop at the store.
c) He is going to school.
2-Compound Sentences:
“A compound sentence contains at least two independent clauses.”
Examples:
a) Ali laughed and Hamza cried.
b) He is sleeping when they came.
c) She is singer and her voice is beautiful.
3-Complex Sentences:
“The complex sentences combine independent clauses with dependent clauses.”
Examples:
a) Ali is beautiful than Hamza.
b) The battery which I bought last Monday is defective.
c) If she comes late then I’ll tell her the assignment.
4-Compound-Comples Sentences:
“A compound- complex sentence contains two or more independent clauses and at least
one dependent clause.”
Examples:
a) Fatima teaches the kids who live in the neighbourhood after she comes home from work.
b) Because I had limited time so I did not read the last chapter yet I still enjoyed the book.
c) Although the exercise was difficult but I managed to finished it on time so I passed the
exam.
