The document provides guidelines for planning and designing a community centre. It discusses defining a community centre and identifying the purpose, factors to consider in planning and location, functional and design features, accessibility, typical spaces, and sustainability. The guidelines aim to address community needs, provide equitable access, and ensure flexibility through community involvement and integrated planning. Sample community centres are referenced that demonstrate multi-purpose spaces, visibility, accessibility, and responding to a population's changing needs.

The building is user friendly because of it's organised clustered arrangement, giving each
activity it's own space.
S Y N T H E S I S
As designers, we should make use of the concept of clustered arrangement, it may help the
community indicate easily and also its giving each activity it's own space.
2 . A N A L Y S I S
KAPAR, with about 142,000 voters, has one major issue in the constancy – gangsterism.
Instead of kids going to gangsterism, they can exert the energy and attention in outdoor
activates, as in rakan muda klang.
S Y N T H E S I S
As designers, we should make use concept of encouraging outdoor activates in our site, it
will give the community a place to go to.
SYNTHESIS ASSIGNMENT 1A
2 . A N A L Y S I S
Petaling Jaya City Council (Majlis Bandaraya Petaling Jaya) is the city council which
administer the city of Petaling Jaya in the state of Selangor, Malaysia. Based on the
building, the analysis that can be studied from the schedule of accommodation is the lobby
area that provided is too small for visitors who have the business there and there is no
receptionist counter in the building. Other than that, the worker’s space is too open and
they do not have their own privacy spaces.
S Y N T H E S I S
Based on analytical study, synthesis that can be done is that we need to provide a larger
lobby area and have a comfortable waiting area for visitors. In addition, we also need to
provide receptionist or customer service space in the building to facilitate visitor dealings.
Finally, we need to provide a par!!on area for each worker to have their own privacy
space.
3 . A N A L Y S I S
There is no access for the disabled at the entrance of the building. There are no ramps provided at the entrance
of the building, making it inaccessible to wheelchair users.
S Y N T H E S I S
Provide ramps for the disabled to easily access the building.
4 . A N A L Y S I S
The building is designed to maximize the amount of natural day light it can receive as its surrounded by glass
walls and windows.
S Y N T H E S I S
As designers, we should make use of the natural daylight as it results on less consumption of electricity in the
building.
1 . A N A L Y S I S
The Enabling Village is located surrounded by housing areas.
S Y N T H E S I S
The community center has targeted their user correctly and making its place as a
meeting point of the surrounding community.
2 . A N A L Y S I S
The arrangement of spaces and programmes are unorganized and a little
difficult for users to interact.
S Y N T H E S I S
The community center should have arrange their spaces using the architecture
design elements and made it clear for the user to experience it.
3 . A N A L Y S I S
The Enabling Village is filled with disabled friendly features that celebrate them
rather than just doing it for the requirements.
S Y N T H E S I S
Our community is made of society from different backgrounds, race, religion and
physical abilities. Most public places in Malaysia might have a disable feature
but it is enough to make them feel welcome. The Enabling Village proofs that you
can design a place that fits the many type of a community.

WHAT IS A COMMUNITY CENTRE ?
DEF INITIO N
Community centres are publicity owned facilities that provide space for local organizations
and community groups to meet, and for a range of social programs, services and activities
which address the social needs of a community.
P UR P O S E
1. IDENTIFY LOCAL SOCIAL NEEDS AND DESIRED SOCIAL OUTCOMES
• Community centres should be tailored to the social needs of the
community they will serve.
• Determine the age, lifestyle, cultural and socio-economics
characteristics of different group within the population and preferences
with regard to community activities, programs and services.
2. DETERMINE SIZE AND SCALE
• There is no minimum or standard sized catchment population that
triggers a requirement for a community centre.
• Consider what other facilities and services exist in the local government
area and any council policies and benchmarks regarding population
thresholds and catchments.
• Finding the right balance between larger district and local community
centres will require consideration of the local community’s unique needs
for community space.
3. IDENTIFY LOCATION
• To be well utilized and serve identified social needs.
• Need to be visible and accessible.
• Can be accessible by public transport.
• Have good pedestrian and cycling connections.

• Have the ability to lock down different components to provide managed access at nights or on
weekends.
• Be easily identified and known by the community as a public facility for community use.
• Consider symbolism that communicates history, community values and future aspirations.
T I M I N G O F D E L I V E R Y
• Consider opportunities for planning agreements and works-in –kind arrangements that can specify
the timing provision.
• Consider the population grows and needs evolve, community centres need to respond to the
changing demographic profile of the area.
• Consider ways to monitor the changing need of the population, through community consultation and
resident involvement in planning and programming activities.
S U S TA I N A B L E
• Incorporate energy and water efficient design principles and promote sustainable use of materials
including waste minimization.
• Incorporate universal design principles to ensure the center is fully accessible.

OVERALL DESIGN CONCEPT
• Creating a friendly-used community centre in residential area for
public users mainly for kids and folks.
• A feasible spaces and safe to use with minimum vehicle circulation.
• A highly infrastructure-equipped to the site to encourage the users
to the community centre.
Centralised building ; an island building surrounded by the vehicular
circulation and other activities. This is to provide a one way circulation in
order to reduce vehicular movement and to manage the users to direct
them properly.
MAN VS NATURE
This is to create a preserved and knowledge spaces between users and
the surroundings. Keeping the highlights to the nature while focusing on
daily life is the major need on preserving the world.
P L A N N I N G E X A M P L E
D E S I G N V A L U E
As it said, the main users to focus in community centres is kids and also
the folks. A well-connected floors and reducing the technical ground
depths can improve the safety around the site.
D E S I G N S A F E T Y
INDIVIDUAL VS SOCIETY
The differentiation is to organise the use of each types. Society
technically means it provides a good space for high human traffic and
for individual technically means to provide a defensible spaces for the
users in the lone position.
