The music video features close-up shots of the artist interspersed with brief establishing shots of tree blossoms. Natural lighting is used to give the video a realistic feel. There are around 115 shots, with some using filters to indicate flashbacks or separate scenes. Throughout the video, the artist engages in unusual behaviors like eating soap and putting her tongue in an eyelash curler, subverting stereotypical portrayals of femininity. She is the sole focus of the video, wearing only yellow costumes to symbolize different meanings taken from the song's lyrics.
2. • The sound of animals can be heard at the beginning of the music
video, this has been made louder which almost makes the audience
forget that its a music video. These nosies then slowly fade out one by
one till only crickets can be heard which is usually associated with no
one else being there so they can be heard. This gives the sense of
being alone and show that the song may back this up. This is
stereotypical of pop music videos as from my preview pop
deconstruction, the use of sound before the music begins is common.
• The song then follows this first focuses on the artists voice with very
little instruments backing her which is an alternative way to being the
song instead of using a fade in.
3. • The establishing shot pans down from the high perspective of tree
blossom, this is interspersed with a few seconds of close ups of the
artist. This almost gives a taste of what is coming up in the music
video. I think this is very effective as if you blink you’ll miss it which
may make the audience want to rewatch it to make sure they didn’t
miss anything.
• The camera tracks the artist and makes it seem like we are onlooking
what is happing. Because of this the audience feel like they are apart
of the music video and engages fans.
4. • The artist can be seen the be to the side of the shot when not singing
and centred when she is because of this it makes the audience really
watch and move their eyes to follow the artist on screen.
• The majority of the shots are close up or mid shots this is because
the locations are in buildings, this would seem unnatural if a long shot
was used because the distance from the artist and camera may ruin
the set from looking like they’re in a building.
5. • There are around 115 shots, this is quite high for a pop music video
however as lots of the shots go back to scenes that we had already
seen it was almost like there were multiple stories going on.
• Some of the shots have a faded filter over them, this makes it seem
like they could be flashbacks and are close up of the artist. Because
of this it gives the music video some texture and is more interesting
to watch. When the feature artist raps he is in a different location
which is very dark and faded, this shows the they are not in the same
place and is sometimes used when artists aren't free at the same
time to film together so separate scenes are filmed and put together.
6. • Natural lighting is used throughout the video this gives it a realistic feel,
however some of the colours are dull which gives the whole video an
ages feel. This changes when the artist is in a fridge because of the
white walls all the light bounces off and makes the scene much lighter
however there is still a slight filter over giving it a hazed look.
• The artist is seen eating soap, finds a broken glass of wine and eats
one of the broken fragments, puts lipstick over her teeth, ties a rope
around her tongue into a bow and puts her tongue through an eyelash
curler. These props have female connotations however she is using
them in the wrong way so is going against the stereotypical portrayal of
a female.
7. • The artist has no extras in the music video which focuses all the
attention on her this differs from the previous pop music video that I
deconstructed where there were lots of other people in the video.
This could be from the lyrics in the video which don’t mention ‘friends’
so concentrated all on the artist.
• The costumes the artist wears are all the colour yellow, this
symbolises happiness and relaxation however it can also mean
betrayal and jealousy which both can be taken from the lyrics of the
song.
