How Media Products Use Horror Genre Conventions
1. In what ways does your media
product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real media
product?
By Emmanuella Hagan
2. During research I noticed that the convention of most
horror genre posters had either the protagonist or
antagonist as the photo finish and looking at some posters
like Scream, HATES (House at the end of the Street), Drag
me to hell and various other posters the basic convention
of this is seen but I felt that the posters like Cabin in the
woods, SAW II and Alien show a similar but different side
of the convention by not showing the antagonist or
protagonist but having an object to represent that movie
like location, object or something relating to the movie,
with this I think it entices the audience more and makes
them more interested in what the film may be about.
3. Cabin in the woods had the twisted up house and
the audience would wonder it has to do with the
movie, Saw II had the broken finger nail and Alien
had this spaceship looking egg or something like
that, taking these examples I decided to base my
trailer poster on the combination of both the
concepts of Cabin in the woods and a bit of the
basic convention of the protagonist.
4. I decided to incorporate these ideas from the
research, so for my poster I used one of the
locations from the trailer and the antagonist,
through this I felt that it would make the not only
compliment the other tasks but also tells the story
in its own way. To accomplish I aim to use some
contrasting, colour balancing and blending to allow
the location and the antagonist stand out and have
a certain atmosphere to it.
5. Before planning my trailer I did some research into the genre of Horror
and Thriller movie trailers to make further my understanding of the
codes and conventions of them so I will be able to incorporate it into my
trailer. Some trailers like HATES and the Stepfather which has s confusing
but clear story line at the beginning then as it goes through it gets more
confusing and clearer in somewhat way as the horror is being revealed.
Watching these clips showed me the importance of horror and effects
that have to be in the trailer and it also opened my understanding to the
importance of lighting in the trailers. It is clear that dark lighting is used
very much in horror trailers, there is also a used of high key lighting that
is used to present and show the twist of the story and allow the audience
to understand what is going on an looking at this as one of the important
conventions for horror genre-d films it has been put into account and
present in my trailer.
6. Analysing HATES and the Pact gave me the idea of representing
the clash between good and devil with a puzzling storyline and
showing most of the characters to the audience for them to try
and guess the storyline themselves, doing this I thought may
entice the audience more in getting them interested and
guessing what may happen in the movie.
Looking at the linearity of the Pact and HATES and the
Stepfather (another trailer that has a similar base story of mine)
I noticed that it was pretty neat with the characters and what
they are there for, however the revealing of the story is still
hidden in somewhat way and the evidence of how it would end.
With the Stepfather it works well with it because it also included
some crazy mind games.
7. Music
For music I found that it is a very key convention in
building certain suspense and atmosphere for the trailer.
Eerie, heavy and tension building music is present and a
significant in horror trailer. Also this is mostly non diegetic
sound, diegetic sound is also important to help present
the narrative and motion of the trailer.
The jump scenes which are present in most film trailers
are also included in mine because my storyline needed
dialogue due to the story that is set out; so after the
explanation of story through the characters and
typography. The end is exciting and interesting and
would get the audience feeling eager to watch the movie.
