 Sometimes a face to face visit is best
 Kill ‘em with kindness
 Be persistent
 Be consistent

Editor's Notes

  • #2  Play Video Intro: Eric Activity: ReGina -How many of you are Public Librarians? School Librarians? Academic Librarians? -Fill out contact slips – to be shared later.
  • #3 Today can be the Start of a new attitude towards Librarianship Collaboration is another word for “teamwork.” By collaborating you will increase your “library” strength and reduce the stress you are experiencing.
  • #4 Librarians are an untapped resource! Use your resources!
  • #5 Things that would limit your ability to collaborate. Staff: demands on your staff, limited staffing – less flexibility to leave your library Time: similar to staffing – how much time do you have available Start off small, baby steps if this is the case Budget: how much funds you have available for events and services Note: keep in mind not all events, services, etc. cost $$$ - BE CREATIVE! Resources: budget, etc. Note: resources are a variety of things (staff, budget, strengths of your staff) – Both physical (money, facilities, displays) and personal (abilities you and your library have to offer) Learn to Say no: there are times you may have to turn down an offer to collaborate (not a good time for you or your library) Keep in mind: your professional (how graceful you say no) will affect whether or not someone feels comfortable approaching you again. However… it also goes the other way – learn to accept when someone tells you no – learn from, but don’t give up/try again!
  • #6 Give examples in just a moment. (Keep examples brief to allow for questions at end).
  • #7 -This can be applied at your library *Keep examples brief to allow for questions and sharing at end. Programming; Tree Trimming Festival -Expertise; Weeding and Updating children’s collection at Community College Library -Programming and Education; Kansas Reads to Preschoolers Week -Programming; Barton County Family Fun Night -Resource Sharing; BCC Library at Hoisington High School and Plagiarism -Resource Sharing Public Library resources with elementary schools -Programming; Costume drive with Kiwanas International -Staffing; My assistant is a product of the academic program and because of my relationship with the program we found her
  • #9 First 2 Bullets: -this is no time to be prideful: place the needs of your patrons and library first, not what recognition you may receive -Time to go outside your comfort zone- outreach, use those untapped resources in your community (locally, globally) -Be willing to take a chance: be persistent, etc. 3rd Bullet: Secular We all work past our “genre” in some way – all libraries despite their specific genre have the same basic needs, concerns, etc -genres defined as public, school, academic and so on Resources: monetary, physical, personal -Take advantage of your colleagues, their knowledge, experience, skills, expertise
  • #10 -Learn from other genres of libraries -network met new people share your problems maybe they have answers you hadn’t thought of. *Network to create a support system. *Mention the buddy cards -relate to the small and the large libraries – we all have the same basic needs & concerns -create relationships, create friendships, and create ideas Create your buddy system – you will never know when you will need them or when they will need you! -allow yourself to be inspired shed the negativity and be open and inspire others Don’t Give Up! -we all have rough days but don’t turn away good opportunities because of challenges – see these roadblocks as an opportunity to learn, review, and try again!
  • #11 -How can you work alone when we have to work together to ensure our future but also build a strong community? -Why would you want to work alone? -Why make it harder than it has to be? -Why make more work for yourself?
  • #12 Things to keep in mind when forming non-traditional relationships -You never know who you are talking to= you never know when you may be speaking to a person who may be in a position to help you create a relationship - Professionalism: manners makes a difference - Like your mother always said “Use your Manners!” this is no time to forget to say please and thank you Sometimes face to face contact is better than letter, e-mail or even phone – more personal, shows you are making an extra effort When faced with rejection kill ‘em with kindness: you never know when they might come around: don’t show your discourage or fustration – how you react will stay in their mind Be persistent don’t give up! Be consistent: make sure you do what you say you will do! – Actions speak louder than words!
