Dark Mise-en-Scene Analysis of Sherlock Holmes Movie Clip
1. Media Listening Task – Mise-en-Scene
Location:
At the beginning of the movie we see a dark alley, or a street most likely to be in London.
The fact that the time of the day being at night suggests that the actors are in/or going into
a dangerous situation. Towards the middle of the clip we see Sherlock Holmes going into an
old building like an old church where the bad guy and his followers are cursing a woman to
suicide.
Costumes:
The costumes throughout the movie are dark coloured, mostly black and brown-ish. This
influences the dark mood in audience creating a crime scene in the movie. Sherlock Holmes
also used his clothing to hide from the enemy and then beat him before he could react to
the situation, so we could say that clothing is also for camouflage.
Colour:
The colouring through the clip is all black, there is no nice colours like yellow, blue, green,
red and etc. which could also suggest the idea of what is coming next won’t be a very nice
scene in terms of mood and tone of the scene. The colours used both for costumes and
through the clop can also represent the personality of Sherlock Holmes, as he reacts to the
situation before the police and authorities arrive.
Props:
The movie mainly uses guns and sticks to fight the enemy even though we have only have
heard gun loads but no actual gun fights. But this also gives us information about Sherlock
Holmes such as the way he defeats his opponents. He doesn’t actually carry ant type of
protection and he likes to fight his opponents alone with his own power and use their
weapons against them if they have one.
Lighting:
The majority of the lighting is quite low almost whole the time. The lighting is dark to
provide a tense and dangerous mood. The lighting was dark when Sherlock Holmes hid
himself so he won’t attract any attention and the he suddenly charged at the enemy.
Stats/Performance:
Director decided to use Robert Downey Junior who is known to be the actor of Iron Man.
This is a great idea as Robert D. Junior is a well-known actor all around the world and he fits
perfectly with the well-known role of Sherlock Holmes. Other actors aren’t as famous as
they’re not much important in the movie.
