Madhya Pradesh's wheat produce for the current rabi season is expected
to dip by 13 per cent to about 160 lakh tonnes."Wheat has been sown under
50 lakh hectares in the ongoing Rabi season so far, which is about 15 per
cent less than what was sown during the period last year. With maximum
temperature remaining above normal, wheat production may be hit,"
Farmers' Welfare and Agriculture Development Department Director
Mohanlal Meena told a leading newspaper."We are not expecting wheat
production to be over 160 lakh tonnes in the ongoing rabi season. In the
coming days, if temperature doesn't fall and winter rainfall is not received
in the wheat growing pockets of the state, this anticipated production may
also dip," he added.According to agriculture scientist Akhileshnandan
Mishra, cold weather is required for better yield of wheat. But the
maximum temperature has been remaining above normal this season,
which is not a good sign for the crop.He said seeing the weather pattern
this year, many farmers have opted to sow gram (chana) crop, which has
also resulted in a drop in acreage under wheat crop.He said seeing the
weather pattern this year, many farmers have opted to sow gram (chana)
crop, which has also resulted in a drop in acreage under wheat crop.Mishra,
former head, Indore based Indian Agriculture Research Institute (IARI)
Regional Station, said the last month (December) remained warm in the
state, which has hampered the sowing.Last year too, Rabi wheat production
was hit due to unfavourable weather conditions.
India will launch its first major crop damage insurance scheme for
farmers in the fiscal year starting April 1, the Agriculture minister Radha
Mohan Singh said on Friday, in what could be Prime Minister Narendra
Modi's first significant move to address the distress plaguing the country's
agricultural sector. The impact of unseasonal rains and two straight years of
drought on agriculture that sustains over two-thirds of India's 1.25 billion
people has dented Modi's popularity in the countryside, contributing to a
humiliating loss for the premier in elections last year in the largely rural
state of Bihar.
Turmeric settled up on short covering after prices dropped on no
strong report emerged from the mandis as exports and domestic
demand remained slack. Prospects of rising arrivals of new crop kept
prices down. However, reports of good demand from the local stockists
due to forecast of lower production limited the downside. There is
concern over production due to heavy rains during Nov-Dec in south
India but the prices may remain little lower as trader may wait for new
season crop in next one month.Deficient rainfall in during early part of
sowing in major Turmeric growing regions of Maharashtra and
Karnataka may reduce the yield. Sources also stated that around 27-28
lakh bags of total stocks have been reported in local mandies. While the
total production in the coming year is expected to be around 68 lakh
bags, up 20 lakh bags from the last year. As per dept of commerce data,
turmeric exports till September, 2015 pegged at 50,916 tonnes while
the export for the 2014-15 is 90,738 tonnes compared to 78,360 tonnes
in FY14.
Chana settled up on short covering after falling earlier due to higher
supplies against lower demand in the spot market. However upside
seen limited as the standing chana crop is growing well in Rajasthan
and Madhya Pradesh, major producing states. Recently, Government
has offloaded over 1.12 lakh tonnes of pulses, seized from hoarders, in
the retail market to improve availability and tame prices Income tax
department raided traders dealing in pulses, especially chana
(chickpea), in Delhi and Mumbai to check the irregularities in
importing. As per data release by Agriculture Ministry on Jan1, pulses
planted 12.8 million hectares so far, compared with 13.8 million
hectares (mh) last year, and a seasonal area of nearly 14 mh. The
acreage under chana reported higher in Maharashtra (12.72 lh Vs 9.6
lh), Andhra Pradesh (3.32 lh Vs 2.67 lh) and Karnataka compared to
last year’s acreage but slightly lower in Rajasthan (12.35 lh Vs 12.56
lh) and MP as per data released by respective state agriculture
department.

Fundamental Watch : Chana
CHANA PRICES AT KEY SPOT MARKETNational Market Update
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, area under Rabi pulses throughout
the country stood 128.24 lakh hectares as on 01st January this year, around
2.4% lower when compared to the area sown during corresponding period last
year which was 131.33 Lakh hectares.
According to latest report released by Ministry of Agriculture, Chana area
till date (as on 01.01.2016) was registered at 81.08 Lakh Ha which was around
2% higher than the last year in the corresponding period. .Last year it was
79.95 Lakh ha. Till date sowing area of Chana in Maharashtra, Andhra
Pradesh and Karnataka has increased whereas in Rajasthan and Madhya
Pradesh it has decreased as compare to last year.
According to latest report released by Ministry of Agriculture, Peas area till
date (as on 01.01.2016) was registered at 9.60 Lakh Ha which was around 6%
lower than the last year in the corresponding period. .Last year it was 10.19
Lakh ha. Peas Sowing Area in Madhya Pradesh till date has increased by 56%
this year as compare to last year from 2.88 Lakh Ha to 4.50 Lakh Ha.
Higher than normal temperature in many parts of Madhya Pradesh and in
parts of Indore in particular may affect normal yield of standing chana crop
this year. Lower soil moisture has slowed down normal growth of plant. Rains
at this stage are very crucial and it may decide the final size of the crop.
According to the local source in Indore region, chana yield may drop 30-40%
as compared to last year due to unfavorable weather condition so far.
