6. • 71% of the public believes that it is sometimes better to start at
a community college than at a 4-year college (Associated
Press, 2010).
• Students who start at a community college are just as likely to
earn a bachelor’s degree after transferring to a 4-year college
as are students who start at a 4-year institution (American
Association of Community Colleges [AACC], 2009).
• The majority of community college students who transfer to
four-year institutions perform as well as or better than the
students who started at the four-year school (American
Association of Community Colleges).

7. • Some of the highest paying jobs require an Associate’s
degree, and they can be completed at a community college
(Forbes, 2013).
At Kellogg there are Associates in Applied Science in over 40 occupational
programs.

8. • Community colleges enrolled 41% of all undergraduate students living in
poverty in 2007–2008; approximately 1 in 5 community colleges students lived
in poverty that year (AACC, 2010).
• 22% of community college students have family incomes of $100,000 (NCES,
2011a).
• Between 1989–1990 and 2009–2010, the number of students of color walking
across the stage at graduation has increased at a greater pace than has the
pace of those walking through the front door and enrolling (Mullin, 2011) .
