KEY TAKEAWAY: Cloud Native is not where AOS-CX lives but rather how it was built. The cloud native principles allow the CX portfolio to lower OPEX through automation, do live upgrades for no downtime, quickly upgrade (e.g., upgrade to 50G is software-based so no port changes are needed), etc.
Gartner recently published some research where they talked about cloud native infrastructure as have four key characteristics and those are around modularity, programmability, resiliency, and elasticity and that really defines and captures what we did with CX from the get go, even before cloud native was being embraced in technology.
From a modularity perspective, we built everything - every feature, every process - as independent within the operating system and they all interact independently with the network state database. So that really provides us the ability to innovate faster and bring new features out, you know, in a more rapid way for our customers.
From our programmability perspective we, and this is really the key to unlocking the automation that we have, built a fully programmable 100% RESTful API that has modeling for basically every function within the switch. So anything that we can do as a group, as a vendor in terms of programming our operating system, our customers can do it as well. And then we've also taken those interfaces and built tools like NetEdit and NAE to really deliver value to you.
Next is around resiliency and the fact that we have built these independent processes with a micro services based design. It's a very stable and reliable operating system. You don't have a lot of interprocess communication. So if something were to fail, it can gracefully restart independently versus having to bring down the whole network.
And then elasticity is the last element. As you will see as you get to know our CX portfolio, we’ve really proven the scalability and elasticity of our CX operating system in that we're able to deliver this single piece of cloud-native software that can span your use cases from the access layer through to the core and data center. And that's not a simple task. A lot of innovation and engineering work has gone into building this robust scalable elastic operating system that can meet your needs in all different environments.
So with that foundation we were able to build some really cool innovations on top, from a software perspective. And this is really our focus in terms of simplifying your operator experience and providing the control and visibility that you’re looking for.
