2. Astrid Lindgren
She is probably Sweden’s most famous writer. She wrote children’s books
such as Pippi Longstocking, Children of noisy village and Ronia the
robber’s daughter – and many, many more.
She was born on 14th of November 1907 in Näs in the county of Småland,
and died on 28th of January 2002.
She has a son, Lars, and a daughter, Karin. It was when Karin was ill in
bed that Astrid started making up stories about a strong red-headed girl, to
amuse her.
3. Evert Taube
He was an author, artist, composer and singer. He lived between 1890-
1976. He was born in Gothenburg, but spent many years of his life
working on boats and travelling the world. He has written many, many
songs that are part of the Swedish music treasure. Many songs are about
Argentina, where he lived and worked between 1910-1915.
4. Greta Garbo
She was a film actress, born as Greta Lovisa Gustafsson in 1905. She
played in both Swedish and English movies, some of the most famous
being Anna Karenina and Mata Hari. Three times she was nominated for
the Academy award for Best Actress. In 1954 she received an Academy
Honorary award.
She died in 1990.
5. Birgit Nilsson
She lived between 1918 and 2005. She was a well known soprano, singing
on opera stages around the world. Some of the music she performed was
Puccini’s Turandot and Wagner’s Lohengrin.
6. Ingmar Bergman
He was a Swedish film director, writer and producer. He was born in 1918.
He is considered to be one of the most influential filmmakers of all time.
He directed more than 60 films, some of the most famous being The
Seventh Seal, Persona and Fanny & Alexander. He has won three Oscars
for his films.
During the second half of his life he lived on Fårö, adjacent to Gotland.
This is also where he was buried after his death in 2007.
7. Dag Hammarskjöld
He was a Swedish diplomat who at the age of 47 the job as General
Secretary of the UN. Unfortunately he died in a plane crash in 1961, at the
age of 56.
He was awarded a posthumous Nobel Prize, only three more people have
done so.
