19. James’ Message concerning wealth
(1) the Jews considered wealth to be an evidence
of God’s acceptance and blessing but they
ignored the covenantal responsibilities and
warnings.
(2) the wealthy Jews were often the very ones
who persecuted the early Christians.

Luke 12:16–21 (ESV)
16 And he told them a parable, saying, “The land of a rich man
produced plentifully, 17 and he thought to himself, ‘What shall I
do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’ 18 And he said, ‘I will
do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and
there I will store all my grain and my goods. 19 And I will say to
my soul, “Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years;
relax, eat, drink, be merry.” ’ 20 But God said to him, ‘Fool! This
night your soul is required of you, and the things you have
prepared, whose will they be?’ 21 So is the one who lays up
treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”

29. Not Trusting God

Material Girl combined all the teaching James has for the rich. Stand for the reading of God’s word
Please stand for the reading of God’s word. And behold, a man came up to him, saying, “Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?” 17 And he said to him, “Why do you ask me about what is

I borrowed Madonna’s hit song title for today’s sermon. Here’s part of a music video
Material Girl was supposed to be satire of the 80’s materialistic pursuits. Madonna even produced a video that she thought would tip her hand about the message in the song. She was wrong. It became one of her biggest hits! The reason Madonna grew tired of the track, which had arguably always been intended as a tongue-in-cheek homage to the power-obsessed 80s, is that almost everyone took it literally, and the “Material Girl” nickname would follow her around for decades. In 2015, said she never wanted to hear the song again.

Looks like his stuff owned him.
Matthew 19:23–24 Truly, I say to you, only with difficulty will a rich person enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for
a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.
Remember the Kingdom of God is both a future reality and a now reality. Kingdom living is what we are called to now.
Trust- Jesus or money
Pride- It defined him
The Jewish people of that day believed that riches were an evidence of God’s blessing. They based this on the promises God gave the Jewish nation at the beginning of their history. It is true that God did promise material blessing if they obeyed, and material loss if they disobeyed.
Wrong! Money is morally neutral. What you do to obtain it, what you do with it and attitude toward it determine its goodness or evilness.
1 Timothy 6:10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.
I have it- I’ve made it (Pride)
I don’t have it- That’s unfair (Jealousy)
You have it- I want it (Covet)
You have it- you’re the best (Favoritism)

with its scorching heat and withers the grass; its flower falls, and its beauty perishes. So also will the rich man fade away in the midst of his pursuits.
Pride- fades in the middle of his pursuits (James will bring that idea back up)
Equality- Must see brothers as equals
In the religion that Jesus establishes all are equal. If you don’t believe that you’re not part of His church
Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”— yet you do not
know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills,

it plain that the problem addressed here is man acting independently and not being prepared to submit himself to God’s sovereign will. This problem of independence underlies all sin, for it was the final temptation to which Eve yielded in Eden (Gen 3:5). Eve ate the fruit because she wanted to be like God; she chose to defy God’s edict and so acted independently of Him. Sin, then, is essentially an act of rebellion against God, or expressed differently, an assertion of independence from God
Self reliant- Making plans w/o God. Not trusting God. Multitude of counselors, Acknowledge the lord in all your ways and he will make your paths straight.
Limited knowledge- You don’t know but God does
Arrogance- Boasting about your cleverness
Luke 12:15 Jesus-Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.
Luke 12:16–21 (ESV)

James addresses the speech of the rich. Arrogance- From the Greek dictionary- Consistently talking about your greatness simple definition
You make yourself the idol
Another Greek dictionary says this an insolent and empty assurance, which trusts in its own power and resources and shamefully despises and violates divine laws and human rights. 3 an impious and empty presumption which trusts in the stability of earthy things
So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.
Called to do the right thing not just avoid sinning

Hording- laid up treasure
Defrauding- not paid their wages
Exploitation- 5:6 “You have condemned” This refers to the financial and judicial exploitation of widows, orphans, strangers, the poor, and the socially powerless and outcast
Warning-Weep and howl miseries are coming
Evidence- God keeps track of your finance's gold, silver, cloth
Testimony- God has heard the prayers of the cheated
Judgement- Your riches will be the fuel for the fire you bring down on yourselves
Immediate pay- Deut 24:12
Release of debt- Deut 15:1 every seven years

Year of Jubilee- Lev. 25:8-27 every 50 years
Faithful- to God
Steward- Are you managing what you have well now?
Acquiring- Is it honest, lawful and right
