Freedom is for love
Not self-serving
Second Greatest commandment
Stop infighting
If you accept Jewish law you will be emphasizing the flesh and the flesh is what you’ll get.
What matters, though, is that your identity is that of a true child of God, indwelt by the spirit, without needing the Jewish law, and particularly its requirement of circumcision, as your badge of membership. If you’re free of that, the spirit’s motivation and power mean that you will also remain free from the snares of paganism, and the behaviors that goes with it. Free from the law, free from paganism, one is then free for God, and free to love one’s neighbor.
This little tale is all about the use and abuse of freedom. It is one thing to be set free from prison or slavery, and quite another to decide what to do with your freedom when you’ve got it. This is the issue faced by every criminal when released from prison: shall I use my new-found freedom to go and commit more crimes? The fact that you are, in one sense, free to walk on, and even ruin, the grass round a beautiful building doesn’t mean that that is the right thing to do. Freedom from restraint, if it is to be of any use, must be matched by a sense of freedom for a particular purpose.
Galatians 5:16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
God’s Spirit is the giver of life.
Galatians 3:3 Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh?
Our spiritual life was a the work of the Holy Spirit. He begins us and He guides us.
Not dependent on you…it’s a work of the Spirit
Not a rite or ritual- not the keeping of works of the Law, kosher, circumcision or water baptism.
Cooperation with the Spirit- the indwelling Spirit will change you.
What does that look like? What does this look like in practice?
Ephesians 4:1–3 I…urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing
with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
Walking in the spirit is not about the avoidance of sin but the walking in righteousness. In the choosing to do what is holy the possibility of doing sin is lessened

Ephesians 4:17 Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds.

Change of mind- learn about who Jesus is, what he expects and how he modeled behavior Paul uses learn about Jesus.
Ephesians 5:2 And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
Sacrificial Love
Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but

Galatians 5:17–18 For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to
each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
The Spirit and the flesh are at odds with each other
The Law’s relation to the flesh is that it defines sin
I would add that this same tension exists between the son of the flesh Ishmael and the son of the promise Isaac.
As in Galatians 1:4, the Messiah’s death, “giving himself for our sins,” has “rescued us from the present evil age.”
The wrong things the sinful self does are clear: being sexually unfaithful, not being pure, taking part in sexual sins, worshiping gods, doing witchcraft, hating, making
trouble, being jealous, being angry, being selfish, making people angry with each other, causing divisions among people, feeling envy, being drunk, having wild and
wasteful parties, and doing other things like these. I warn you now as I warned you before: Those who do these things will not inherit God’s kingdom.
I believe we are able to resist the works of the flesh because we are not under the Law.
However, Most of these are not an addressed problem
Most relate to former pagan life-style
Problems are related to mixing the Way with Judaism
hating, making trouble, being jealous, being angry, being selfish, making people angry with each other, causing divisions among people, feeling envy
To the works of the flesh- Galatians 5:15 But if you bite and devour one another, watch out that you are not consumed by one another.
hating, making trouble, being jealous, being angry, being selfish, making people angry with each other, causing divisions among people, feeling envy. These are the ones that they are struggling with. These are unity stoppers, Spirit grieving works.
The Works plural come from the deep recesses of our natural man. Can be manifested singularly or plurally. But these feed off one another
Galatians 5:26 Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another. This is found at the end of the chapter.
Galatians 5:21b

Galatians 5:22–23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
Notice fruit is singular. It’s a package deal.
Galatians 5:13–14 For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
The activation of fruit is serving one another
Loving our neighbor is the catalyst for a fruitful walk
John 15:5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
Jesus even said if you don’t bear fruit you are in danger of being cut off from the vine and burned by the vinedresser who is God.
Galatians 5:24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
Galatians 5:16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
