God, who reconciled us to
Himself through Christ and gave
us the ministry of reconciliation,

Reconciliation
to reestablish proper friendly interpersonal relations
after these have been disrupted or broken (the
componential features of this series of meanings
involve (1) disruption of friendly relations because of
(2) presumed or real provocation, (3) overt behavior
designed to remove hostility, and (4) restoration of
original friendly relations)—‘to reconcile, to make
things right with one another, to reconcile fully,
reunite.

Pictures from Jesus
Luke 15:4–6…What man among you, if he has a
hundred sheep and has lost one of them, does not
leave the ninety-nine in the open pasture and go after
the one which is lost until he finds it? When he has
found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And
when he comes home, he calls together his friends
and his neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me,
for I have found my sheep which was lost!’
7
Pictures from Jesus
Luke 15:8–9 Or what woman, if she has ten silver
coins and loses one coin, does not light a lamp
and sweep the house and search carefully until
she finds it? When she has found it, she calls
together her friends and neighbors, saying,
‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin which I
had lost!’

Pictures from Jesus
Luke 15:11–24 And He said, “A man had two sons. 12 “The younger of them said to his father, ‘Father,
give me the share of the estate that falls to me.’ So he divided his wealth between them. 13 “And not
many days later, the younger son gathered everything together and went on a journey into a distant
country, and there he squandered his estate with loose living. 14 “Now when he had spent everything, a
severe famine occurred in that country, and he began to be impoverished. 15 “So he went and hired
himself out to one of the citizens of that country, and he sent him into his fields to feed swine. 16 “And he
would have gladly filled his stomach with the pods that the swine were eating, and no one was giving
anything to him. 17 “But when he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired men have
more than enough bread, but I am dying here with hunger! 18 ‘I will get up and go to my father, and will
say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in your sight; 19 I am no longer worthy to be called
your son; make me as one of your hired men.” ’ 20 “So he got up and came to his father. But while he was
still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion for him, and ran and embraced him and kissed
him. 21 “And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight; I am no longer
worthy to be called your son.’ 22 “But the father said to his slaves, ‘Quickly bring out the best robe and
put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet; 23 and bring the fattened calf, kill it, and
let us eat and celebrate; 24 for this son of mine was dead and has come to life again; he was lost and has
been found.’ And they began to celebrate.

The Back Story of Philemon
Philemon was a wealthy resident of
Colossae
Met Paul in Emphasis during the “open
door”
Became a Christ follower
Started a church in his house.
10
Philemon
The Back Story of Philemon
Philemon owned household slaves.
Onesimus was one them.
Conflict arose in the house. Possible theft
Onesimus ran away to Rome

Paul writes a personal letter
Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus, and Timothy
our brother, To Philemon our beloved
brother and fellow worker, and to Apphia our
sister, and to Archippus our fellow soldier,
and to the church in your house: Grace to
you and peace from God our Father and the
Lord Jesus Christ.

Personal
I thank my God always, making mention of
you in my prayers, because I hear of your
love and of the faith which you have toward
the Lord Jesus and toward all the saints; and I
pray that the fellowship of your faith may
become effective through the knowledge of

every good thing which is in you for Christ’s
sake. For I have come to have much joy and
comfort in your love, because the hearts of
the saints have been refreshed through you,
brother.

Keyword Fellowship
I pray that the fellowship of your faith
may become effective through the
knowledge of every good thing which
is in you for Christ’s sake.
Philemon 6 19
Philemon is a doer
For I have come to have much joy and
comfort in your love, because the
hearts of the saints have been
refreshed through you, brother.
Philemon 7 20
Stop and think
Do you know a Philemon?
How do you think he reacted when he was
handed this letter from by his runaway slave?
What impact could a “normal” cultural reaction
have on the Christian community?
What impact would it have on the reputation to
outsiders?
21
Personal favor
Therefore, though I have enough
confidence in Christ to order you to do
what is proper, yet for love’s sake I rather
appeal to you—since I am such a person
as Paul, the aged, and now also a
prisoner of Christ Jesus—
Philemon 8–9 22
Paul the old prisoner
Not authority
Asking in love
23
The Runaway
I appeal to you for my child Onesimus, whom
I have begotten in my imprisonment, who
formerly was useless to you, but now is
useful both to you and to me. I have sent
him back to you in person, that is, sending
my very heart, whom I wished to keep with
Philemon 10–14 24
The Runaway
me, so that on your behalf he might minister
to me in my imprisonment for the gospel;
but without your consent I did not want to
do anything, so that your goodness would
not be, in effect, by compulsion but of your
own free will.
Philemon 10–14 25

26
Sending him back
Punishment?
Restoration?
Elevation?
27
Stop and think
Have you offended anyone?
Has anyone offended you?
Who is the slave? The offender or the offended?
28
Do the right thing
Consent
Compulsion
Free will
29
Cannot Command This
Be kind to one another, tender-
hearted, forgiving each other, just as
God in Christ also has forgiven you.
Ephesians 4:32 30
More than restoration
For perhaps he was for this reason separated
from you for a while, that you would have him
back forever, no longer as a slave, but more
than a slave, a beloved brother, especially to
me, but how much more to you, both in the
flesh and in the Lord.
Philemon 15–16 31
Time
32
Separated for
a time
Reunited
Christian Idea
…since you laid aside the old self with its
evil practices, and have put on the new
self who is being renewed to a true
knowledge according to the image of the
One who created him— a renewal in
which there is no distinction between
Colossians 3:9b–11 33
Christian Idea
Greek and Jew, circumcised and
uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave
and freeman, but Christ is all, and in all.
Colossians 3:9b–11 34
Break with culture
If then you regard me a
partner, accept him as
you would me.
Philemon 17 35
Partner
Same root word as fellowship/Koinonia
36
A picture
But if he has wronged you in any way or owes you
anything, charge that to my account; I, Paul, am
writing this with my own hand, I will repay it (not
to mention to you that you owe to me even your
own self as well). Yes, brother, let me benefit from
you in the Lord; refresh my heart in Christ.
Philemon 18-20 37
Christlike
Offended Offender
38
Is it possible?
Never pay back evil for evil to anyone.
Respect what is right in the sight of all
men. If possible, so far as it depends on
you, be at peace with all men.
39
A sign of maturity
Having confidence in your
obedience, I write to you,
since I know that you will do
even more than what I say.
Philemon 21 40
Audacity of Confidence
At the same time also prepare me a lodging, for I
hope that through your prayers I will be given to
you. Epaphras, my fellow prisoner in Christ Jesus,
greets you, as do Mark, Aristarchus, Demas, Luke,
my fellow workers.
Philemon 22–24 41
Be a vessel of grace
The grace of the Lord Jesus
Christ be with your spirit.

But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion for him, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. 21 “And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ 22 “But the father said to his slaves, ‘Quickly bring out the best robe and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet; 23 and bring the fattened calf, kill it, and let us eat and celebrate; 24 for this son of mine was dead and has come to life again; he was lost and has been found.’ And they began to celebrate. 9
