20. Meet the man
There was a man in the land of Uz whose
name was Job, and that man was
blameless and upright, one who feared
God and turned away from evil.
Job 1:1 20
22. Satan
Job 1:6–12 (ESV)
6 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the
LORD, and Satan also came among them. 7 The LORD said to Satan, “From where have you
come?” Satan answered the LORD and said, “From going to and fro on the earth, and from
walking up and down on it.” 8 And the LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered my
servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, who
fears God and turns away from evil?” 9 Then Satan answered the LORD and said, “Does Job
fear God for no reason? 10 Have you not put a hedge around him and his house and all
that he has, on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions
have increased in the land. 11 But stretch out your hand and touch all that he has, and he
will curse you to your face.” 12 And the LORD said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in
your hand. Only against him do not stretch out your hand.” So Satan went out from the
presence of the LORD.

23. Job’s reaction
Naked I came from my mother’s womb,
and naked shall I return. The LORD gave,
and the LORD has taken away; blessed be
the name of the LORD.

24. Part 2
Job 2:1–7 (ESV)
1 Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present
themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came among them to
present himself before the LORD. 2 And the LORD said to Satan, “From
where have you come?” Satan answered the LORD and said, “From
going to and fro on the earth, and from walking up and down on it.” 3
And the LORD said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job, that
there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, who
fears God and turns away from evil? He still holds fast his integrity,
although you incited me against him to destroy him without reason.” 4
Then Satan answered the LORD and said, “Skin for skin! All that a man
has he will give for his life. 5 But stretch out your hand and touch his
bone and his flesh, and he will curse you to your face.” 6 And the LORD
said to Satan, “Behold, he is in your hand; only spare his life.” 7 So
Satan went out from the presence of the LORD and struck Job with
loathsome sores from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head.

27. Job finally explodes!
In exasperation, bitter at the injustice of his suffering and the
reproaches of his friends, and because he had no man to
mediate between him and God, Job gave vent to his complaint in
a discourse addressed to God himself. He was weary of life, and
was going to say exactly how he felt without mincing his words.
He pleaded with God not to condemn him, but to show what He
had against him. When we know right from wrong it is fair
enough to be condemned for doing wrong; but if we are
unaware of having done wrong it is reasonable to enquire the
reason for the punishment.

28. God Appears
Job 38:1–4 (ESV)
1 Then the LORD answered Job out of the
whirlwind and said: 2 “Who is this that darkens
counsel by words without knowledge? 3 Dress for
action like a man; I will question you, and you
make it known to me. 4 “Where were you when I
laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you
have understanding.
28
29. Job replies
Behold, I am of small account; what shall I
answer you? I lay my hand on my mouth. I
have spoken once, and I will not answer;
twice, but I will proceed no further.”

1. You must decide to be patient.

7 Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until

If you pray for patience, you’ll get trials
How do you define it?
Being able to tolerate delays, problems or suffering without becoming annoyed or anxious
To demonstrate patience despite difficulties
Being slow to anger, hope, to bring forth through labor
Psalm 37:7 Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices!
Revelation 2:19 I know your works, your love and faith and service and patient endurance, and that your latter works exceed the first.
Not just an attitude or way of thinking but a way of being and action.

Jeremiah was kidnapped and stoned in Egypt
Ezekiel killed by Jewish elders in exile
Daniel was made a eunuch

Hebrews 11:35–38 Some were tortured, refusing to accept release, so that they might rise again to a better life. 36 Others suffered mocking and flogging, and even chains and imprisonment. 37 They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were killed with the sword. They went about in skins of sheep and goats, destitute, afflicted, mistreated— 38 of whom the world was not worthy—wandering about in deserts and mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.
Philippians 1:29 For it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ you should not only believe in him but also suffer for his sake,

6 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them. 7 The Lord said to Satan, “From where have you come?” Satan answered the Lord and said, “From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking up and down on it.” 8 And the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, who fears God and turns away from evil?” 9 Then Satan answered the Lord and said, “Does Job fear God for no reason? 10 Have you not put a hedge around him and his house and all that he has, on every side? Job 1:20–22 Then Job arose and tore his robe and shaved his head and fell on the ground and worshiped. 21 And he said, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.”

Job 2:10 But he said to her, “You speak as one of the foolish women would speak. Shall we receive good from God, and shall we not receive evil?”
In all this Job did not sin with his lips.
Job 2:11 Now when Job’s three friends heard of all this evil that had come upon him, they came each from his own place, Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite. They made an appointment together to come to show him sympathy and comfort him.
