We face a choice about how we will be judged by God

determine our own future regarding mercy versus
judgment. Those of us who show mercy now will be
shown mercy later. Those opting for judgment now
will face merciless judgment in the future.

A Jewish Synagogue that is worshipping Jesus as the Messiah
Rich with all the trimmings. Gold fingered
Poor with nothing
Rich best seat- The "best seat" in a synagogue is in front, with one's back to the chest that holds the Torah.
Reaction- have the best seat. Go stand in the back

God has chosen the poor to be rich in faith and heirs of the Kingdom
James 1:9–10 Let the lowly brother boast in his exaltation, and the rich in his humiliation, because like a flower of the grass he will pass away.
James 2:4 have you not then made distinctions among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?
Distinctions- To judge there is a distinction. We all make judgments. Meaning to judge the goodness or badness of the distinction.
Judges- one who presides over the court and pronounces judgment.
To think or reason with completeness and thoroughness
Evil- same root as pornos, if a definite article is placed in front it is a title for Satan, Evil, sick or diseased.
Christian love shows no partiality – Jesus loves us all the same. We follow his example
An insult to the price paid. Are you saying that Jesus’ blood bought something inferior?
An insult to God. God sent his son for everyone
Blasphemes the name of Jesus. Our actions can cause others to judge Jesus. Our actions speak louder than our words

The rich were oppressing the early church.
Kicking them out of the synagogues.
Paul talks about being prosecuted by Jews and Greeks.
Denying Jesus is the Messiah
James 2.8 If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing well.
Leviticus 19:18 You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD.
The rich were taking them to court
Many would say that relieves them of their responsibility to uphold the second part of that scripture
Do unto others and then run! NO
Turn the other cheek. Go the extra mile. Pray for those who despitefully use you. Your doing good is not dependent on the other person doing good first or in return.
James 2:9-11 But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors. For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become guilty of all of it. For he who said, “Do not commit
adultery,” also said, “Do not murder.” If you do not commit adultery but do murder, you have become a transgressor of the law.
Transgressor- to step over a known boundary
Breaking the least

Showing partiality is sin!
Whole vs. Part: James has some harsh news for anyone who judges others’ behavior without considering how they themselves will be judged: Keeping most of the law will not suffice in God’s eyes. When we choose not to show mercy to others and yet we stumble in our own obedience to the law, we will experience the same lack of mercy from God. James challenges us to correct how we treat others by considering how our behavior will influence our judgment by God.
James 2.12-13 So speak and so act as those who are to be judged under the law of liberty. For judgment is without mercy to one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.
We face a choice about how we will be judged by God in the future. According to James, the mercy we show to others will be the determining factor for the mercy we will be shown by God. Practically speaking, we determine our own future regarding mercy versus judgment. Those of us who show mercy now will be shown mercy later. Those opting for judgment now will face merciless judgment in the future.
Luke 6:37–38 Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven; give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.”
That mercy triumphs over judgment. Everyone falls short of fulfilling all aspects of God’s law; this is a given. But James reminds us that we can expect to face judgment as transgressors if we judge others by the same laws we have broken. James challenges us to let the coming judgment influence how we treat others now. His closing thought in verse 13 offers us hope: “Mercy triumphs over judgment.” And based on the magnitude of mercy that God has displayed to us through new life in Christ Jesus, the least we can do is extend this same mercy to others. What we do today, James reminds us, will influence our treatment tomorrow. We should live in such a way that this is not a scary thought.
