This document discusses the problem of showing partiality or favoritism in church. It describes a scenario from the book of James where a rich man is given a good seat in church while a poor man is told to stand in a lesser area. The document argues that Christianity teaches equality, and that in God's eyes, all people are equally sinful and in need of salvation, so no one should be shown partial favoritism over others. It encourages treating all people with equality and fairness as brothers and sisters in Christ.
3. 1 My brothers, do not show favoritism as
you hold on to the faith in our glorious
Lord Jesus Christ.
2 For example, a man comes into your
meeting wearing a gold ring and dressed
in fine clothes, and a poor man dressed in
dirty clothes also comes in.
JAMES 2:1-7
4. 3 If you look with favor on the man
wearing the fine clothes and say, “Sit here
in a good place,” and yet you say to the
poor man, “Stand over there,” or, “Sit here
on the floor by my footstool,”
4 haven’t you discriminated among
yourselves and become judges with evil
thoughts?
JAMES 2:1-7
5. 5 Listen, my dear brothers: Didn’t God choose
the poor in this world to be rich in faith and
heirs of the kingdom that He has promised to
those who love Him?
6 Yet you dishonored that poor man. Don’t the
rich oppress you and drag you into the courts?
JAMES 2:1-7
6. 7 Don’t they blaspheme the noble name
that was pronounced over you at your
baptism?
JAMES 2:1-7
29. 1 My brothers and sisters, believers in our
glorious Lord Jesus Christ must not show
favoritism.
JACOB is favorite of Rebekkah
ESAU favorite of Isaac
JAMES 2:1
30. If you have favorites then you
are ruining the lives of both.
34. 15 “You must not act unjustly when
deciding a case. Do not be partial to the
poor or give preference to the rich; judge
your neighbor fairly.
LEVITICUS 19:15
35. What he’s saying is this: Don’t show
partiality to the rich and don’t show
partiality to the poor. Treat
everyone fairly, rightly, justly.
45. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift
of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our
Lord.
ROMANS 6:23
46. Those who belong to Jesus are equally
saved, equally loved, equally
forgiven.
Horribly things happen when parents
start playing favorites.
Don’t let your preferences become your
prejudices.
50. Biblical thinking that we’re equally made
by God, we’re equally fallen into sin,
and we’re equally loved, and saved,
and forgiven by God, and that God’s
a Father and he loves all of his kids
equal, and he doesn’t have
favorites, and he doesn’t have
prejudices and preferences.
53. HIS seat alone is the seat that
matters, that you and I shouldn’t be
particularly concerned about our
seat, even in this life. And we
shouldn’t be arguing that people like
us should get a better seat.
57. James' commentary: JAMES 2:8-9
8 Indeed, if you keep the royal law
prescribed in the Scripture, Love your
neighbor as yourself, you are doing well.
9 But if you show favoritism, you commit
sin and are convicted by the law as
transgressors.
