3. Definitions:
• Whenever there is a difference in motives and interests of different
persons, there is bound to be some kind of conflict.
• Conflict is a painful condition where an individual feels intense
emotional tension.
• Desires or motives, which are not fulfilled due to certain barrier or
obstacle, leads to frustration.
• Frustration can be caused by following factors:
• Withholding the reinforcement.
• Thwarting (mechanically preventing).
• Conflict.
4. Sources of Frustration.
• External factors: Also called as Environmental factors. These are the situations
present in one’s environment.
• Physical factors: Obstacles or events in their Physical world such as
hailstorms, floods, earthquakes etc.,
• Social factors: Social environment may also block path of individual either in
attainment of a goal or in satisfaction of some needs.
• Economic factors: Financial factor may sometime impose frustration in
individuals.
• Internal factors: These are the factors which frustrate the individual from within.
• Physical abnormality or defects
• Conflicting desires or Aims.
• Individual’s mortality and high standards.
• Level of Aspiration too high.
• Lack of Persistence and sincerity in efforts.
5. Types of conflict.
• Approach-Approach conflict: It’s a conflict between two positive goals or two
opposed beliefs that are equally attractive at the same time
• E.g., When a person is hungry and sleepy at the same time.
• These kind of conflict are usually resolved either by satisfying the first goal and
then the other.
• Avoidance-Avoidance conflict: It’s a conflict between two negative goals.
• E.g., Student must spend next few days studying for exams or face the
possibility of failure.
• These kind of conflicts, a person usually tries to leave the situation
• They might adopt daydreaming or regression.
6. • Approach-Avoidance conflict: It’s a type of conflict where the person
is both attracted and repelled by the same goal.
• It’s the most difficult conflict to resolve because when person
approaches the goal, the negative factor becomes stronger.
• E.g., To purchase a scooter or not; To marry or not to marry.
• Multiple approach- avoidance conflict: It means several goals with
positive and negative factors are involved.
• Many of life’s major decisions involve multiple approach avoidance
conflicts.
7. Management
• Conflict resolution: It’s a term that is used to define as methods and processes
concerned in facilitating the peaceful ending of conflict.
• It refers to a range of processes aimed at eliminating source of conflict.
• Some methods of relieving frustration are as follows:
• Identify the source of frustration. Try to control it or accept the situation.
• Check everything out carefully before making a change in your job or
residence.
• Try to find compromises. Look for positive things when all choices seem
negative.
• Seek reliable help from advisors, teachers and other counsellors.
• Avoid indecision. Stick with your decision and forget about the other choices
unless you are clearly wrong.
• By using ego defence mechanism.
