ENHANCING TEACHING COMPETENCY OF
B.Ed. STUDENT-TEACHERS
Dr.P.Pachaiyappan, Associate Professor,GRT College of Education,Tiruttani,Tamilnadu.
Teaching Competencies
 
NCTE has identified 10 teacher competencies as follows:

(3)   Content Related Competencies
(4)   Transactional Competencies
(5)   Educational Activities Related Competency
(6)   Competencies to Develop Teaching Learning Material 
(7)   Evaluation Competencies 
(8)   Management Competencies 
(9)   Competencies Related to Working with Parents 
(10) Competencies Related to Working with Community and   
Other Agencies
1. Contextual Competencies
Ø Teacher should ensure that the parents and 
the community are accepting the importance 
and usefulness of their efforts.
ØIt includes dealing with problems of wastage 
and  stagnation,  diversities  in  society, 
developing  cohesive  society  and  issues  like 
urbanization and value inculcation.
2. Conceptual Competencies
ØThe teacher should have Clarity of thought, deep 
understanding  of  educational  theories  and 
thorough  knowledge  of  various  educational 
trends, pedagogical methods, techniques etc.
Øcharacteristics of child development, knowledge 
of classroom organization and management.
ØConcepts  and  educational  implications  of 
globalization,  modernization,  liberalization  and 
privatization have to be understood by teachers.
3. Content Related Competencies
Ø Teacher should have mastery over the content 
of the subject he/she has to teach.
       
4. Transactional Competencies
Ø Teachers should have necessary skills to achieve educational 
objectives  effectively through  meaningful  interaction with 
pupils  and  the  environment  by  using  different  methods, 
activities  and  technology  in  an  integrated  and  effective 
manner.
Ø Teacher should have the Skill of motivation & using various 
instructional strategies.
Ø  Skill of using smart board effectively.
Ø  Teacher  educators  should  Improve  Student-teachers 
teaching skills by giving Demonstration lessons.
Ø  Every  student-teacher  must  observe  the  Guide  teachers 
class during the teaching practice.
Ø Student-teachers  are  motivated  to  attend  various 
confereneces,workshops,  field  visits  and  seminars  etc.  to 
improve their professional competencies.
4. Transactional Competencies……
Ø Skill of using and accessing Quick Response(QR)code 
when transacting the school curriculum.

7. Skill of stimulus variation. 
8. Skill of silence and non-verbal cues. 
9. Skill of reinforcement. 
10. Skill of increasing pupil participation.

12. Skill of achieving closure. 
13. Skill of recognizing attending behaviour. 
14. Skill of Experimentation. 
15. Skill of diagnosing difficulties of students related to subject matter. 
16. Skill of using the teaching aids. 
17. Skill of maintaining the science laboratory. 
18. Skill of giving assignment. 
19. Skill of developing critical and independent thinking among the students. 
20. Skill of maintaining Discipline. 
21. Skill of pacing the lesson.

5. Educational Activities Related
Competencies
Ø Ability to organize curricular, co-curricular activities, social and cultural activities 
for achieving educational objectives.
Ø Should Visit Innovative Schools and observe the best practices see if they can be 
implemented when they get appointed in schools. 
Ø Student-teachers should use the language lab for effective communication in 
the classroom.
Ø To inculcate the Reading habit and to improve their English communication skills 
News  papers  kept  in  news  paper  stands  and  should  be  accessible  to  the 
students. 
Ø Every  College  of  Education  must  train  the  student-teachers  in  conducting 
practicals  in  subjects  like  Physics,  Chemistry, Botany  and  Zoology, Computer 
science etc. at high school level (IX and X-std) and higher secondary level (XI and 
XII-std).
Ø To improve the practical skills of student-teachers the teacher educators should 
make use of the lab facilities

6. Competencies to Develop Teaching
Learning Material
Ø Student-teachers should have an ability to develop 
interesting

§ self-learning material
§ audio-visual aids
§ work books 
§ activity books  and
§ to use electronic gadgets like Computers, 
Mobile Phones, Social Media etc.
Edgar Dale (April 27, 1900 – March 8, 1985) was a 
U.S. educationist who  developed  the  famous Cone 
of  Experience.  He  made  several  contributions  to 
audio and visual instruction.
7. Evaluation Competencies
• Teacher should have to continuously evaluate the students 
in a systematic and formal manner.
• Maintain observation records and diagnose the problem 
that children face in comprehending what is taught.
• Teaching  practice  (16  weeks  of  school  internship)  is 
mandatory  to  enhance  the  teaching  competency  of 
Student-teachers.
• The  faculty  members  should  visit  the  student-teachers 
teaching practice schools and give the necessary feedback.
• Student-teachers  should  know  to  construct  the 
achievement test.
8. Management Competencies
Ø Teacher should have a skill of achieving high quality 
educational  objectives  in  minimum  time,  energy 
and money through appropriate and effective use of 
educational aids and active participation of available 
human resources.
Ø Teacher  should  have  the  skill  of  classroom 
management.
9. Competencies Related to Working with
Parents
• Teacher should have the ability to get the co-operation 
from  the  parents and  their  involvement in  achieving 
the educational objectives.
10. Competencies Related to Working with
Community and Other Agencies
• Teacher must have the ability to work towards bringing 
the school and the community as closer as possible. 
• To mould the teacher trainees as effective social agents 
to transform the society towards prosperity.
• He/she  must  understand  the  role  of  community  in 
development of the school.

significant and need to be developed among 
student-teachers to make them professionally 
competent. It will help to improve the quality 
of education.

  • 1. ENHANCING TEACHING COMPETENCY OF B.Ed. STUDENT-TEACHERS Dr.P.Pachaiyappan, Associate Professor,GRT College of Education,Tiruttani,Tamilnadu.

Conceptual Competencies ØThe teacher should have Clarity of thought, deep  understanding  of  educational  theories  and  thorough  knowledge  of  various  educational  trends, pedagogical methods, techniques etc. Øcharacteristics of child development, knowledge  of classroom organization and management. ØConcepts  and  educational  implications  of  globalization,  modernization,  liberalization  and  privatization have to be understood by teachers.
  • 5. 3. Content Related Competencies Ø Teacher should have mastery over the content  of the subject he/she has to teach.        
  • 6. 4. Transactional Competencies Ø Teachers should have necessary skills to achieve educational  objectives  effectively through  meaningful  interaction with  pupils  and  the  environment  by  using  different  methods,  activities  and  technology  in  an  integrated  and  effective  manner. Ø Teacher should have the Skill of motivation & using various  instructional strategies. Ø  Skill of using smart board effectively. Ø  Teacher  educators  should  Improve  Student-teachers  teaching skills by giving Demonstration lessons. Ø  Every  student-teacher  must  observe  the  Guide  teachers  class during the teaching practice. Ø Student-teachers  are  motivated  to  attend  various  confereneces,workshops,  field  visits  and  seminars  etc.  to  improve their professional competencies.

  • 16. 5. Educational Activities Related Competencies Ø Ability to organize curricular, co-curricular activities, social and cultural activities  for achieving educational objectives. Ø Should Visit Innovative Schools and observe the best practices see if they can be  implemented when they get appointed in schools.  Ø Student-teachers should use the language lab for effective communication in  the classroom. Ø To inculcate the Reading habit and to improve their English communication skills  News  papers  kept  in  news  paper  stands  and  should  be  accessible  to  the  students.  Ø Every  College  of  Education  must  train  the  student-teachers  in  conducting  practicals  in  subjects  like  Physics,  Chemistry, Botany  and  Zoology, Computer  science etc. at high school level (IX and X-std) and higher secondary level (XI and  XII-std). Competencies to Develop Teaching Learning Material Ø Student-teachers should have an ability to develop  interesting  § teaching aids  § self-learning material § audio-visual aids § work books  § activity books  and § to use electronic gadgets like Computers,  Mobile Phones, Social Media etc.
  • 18. Edgar Dale (April 27, 1900 – March 8, 1985) was a  U.S. educationist who  developed  the  famous Cone  of  Experience.  He  made  several  contributions  to  audio and visual instruction.

Evaluation Competencies • Teacher should have to continuously evaluate the students  in a systematic and formal manner. • Maintain observation records and diagnose the problem  that children face in comprehending what is taught. • Teaching  practice  (16  weeks  of  school  internship)  is  mandatory  to  enhance  the  teaching  competency  of  Student-teachers. • The  faculty  members  should  visit  the  student-teachers  teaching practice schools and give the necessary feedback. • Student-teachers  should  know  to  construct  the  achievement test.

Management Competencies Ø Teacher should have a skill of achieving high quality  educational  objectives  in  minimum  time,  energy  and money through appropriate and effective use of  educational aids and active participation of available  human resources. Ø Teacher  should  have  the  skill  of  classroom  management.

Competencies Related to Working with Parents • Teacher should have the ability to get the co-operation  from  the  parents and  their  involvement in  achieving  the educational objectives. 10. Competencies Related to Working with Community and Other Agencies • Teacher must have the ability to work towards bringing  the school and the community as closer as possible.  • To mould the teacher trainees as effective social agents  to transform the society towards prosperity. • He/she  must  understand  the  role  of  community  in  development of the school.
