Laying wet bricks contributes to a
problem known as efflorescence
which disfigures the appearance of
brickwork by leaving a white powder
deposited on the surface of the wall.

As well as protecting the materials, we
need to make sure that the right amounts
are ready to use – so we need to know
about…

Quantities
Many construction workers shy away from carrying
out calculations of quantities, perhaps thinking that it’s
too complex for them to deal with.
If we can’t calculate the correct amount of materials
for a task, we might run out of materials before we
finish it.
If we can’t calculate the quantity of
work completed, we won’t know
how much we should be paid.

Quantities
To see how simple it can be to work things out, let’s look
at an example.
When we are calculating quantities, ie the number of bricks needed, we
can say that the area of a wall is the size of its surface.
So when we look at the face of a brick wall we are looking at the area we
need to calculate.

To calculate the area, we multiply the WIDTH by the HEIGHT.
First we need to change millimetres into metres to make it easier.

To do that, we simply move the decimal point three places to the
left:
1790.00 becomes... 1790.00

So now we’ve changed 1790mm into 1.79m.
(We can leave out the zero)
If we do the same with the HEIGHT measurement we end up with:
We can round the result up to 1.21 giving us
an area of 1.21m² (or 1.21 square metres)

Now we know the area of our wall in square metres (m²), we
need to work out how many bricks we need.
There are 60 bricks to a square metre.
We simply multiply 1.21 x 60 to give
us the number of bricks required.

Remember…
Don’t forget: once you’ve calculated the number of
bricks, add 5% for wastage.
