3. What is an SVQ?
SVQs are work-based qualifications which assess the
skills and knowledge required to perform your job role
effectively. The qualifications are designed and based
upon using National Occupational Standards (NOS).
These standards are developed by CITB Sector Skills
Council (SSC) including representatives from your
industry or profession. These standards define what
you must be able to do to show that you are competent
in your work.
4. SVQ Induction
The SVQ you are undertaking is an SVQ in Wall and
Floor Tiling with the SQA as the Awarding Body.
City of Glasgow College is responsible for the quality of
the qualification and meeting the requirements of the
relevant awarding body's policies and guidelines.
On successful completion of your SVQ , SQA will
provide you with a certificate. This will provide
evidence to an employer that you have gone through a
rigorous and effective assessment process
5. SVQ Structure
The SVQ in Carpentry and Joinery consists of NOS Units
which can be broken down into various parts.
Units Describe a specific work activity which you have to perform and
may relate to skills or to the demonstration of Knowledge and
Understanding.
Performance Criteria Are used to judge your competence.
Range/Scope Explains what you must be able to do to prove your
competence and allows you to demonstrate that you can carry
out tasks in different circumstances.
Evidence
Requirements
specify the amount and type of evidence which you will need to
provide to your assessor
Knowledge and
Understanding
states what you must know and understand and how this
knowledge applies to your job.
6. Performance and Knowledge Evidence
To achieve the award you are required to demonstrate
competence in both the Performance and Knowledge
evidence requirements of the unit.

1 interpretation of drawings, specifications, job details, method
statements, risk assessments, control of substances hazardous to
health (COSHH) assessments and manufacturers' information
related to the work to be carried out

2 avoidance of risk by following the given information relating to
the following
2.1 methods of work
2.2 safe use of health and safety control equipment
2.3 safe use and storage of materials, tools and equipment

Hazards
3 those identified by risk assessment, method of work,
manufacturers’ technical information, statutory regulations
and official guidance

4 identified by the principles of protection for occupational use,
types and purpose of each type, work situations and general
work environment
4.1 collective protective measures
4.2 personal protective equipment (PPE)
4.3 respiratory protective equipment (RPE)
4.4 local exhaust ventilation (LEV)
9. Types of Evidence
In order to achieve the component parts of the NOS Unit you will be require
to gather evidence from the workplace in the form of a portfolio. This
evidence may come from:
• Accreditation of prior learning
• current practice - where evidence is generated from a current job role
•a programme of development - where evidence comes from assessment
opportunities built into a learning/training programme (knowledge Evidence
from PDA)
• a combination of these
Evidence may take the form of:
• products of your work
• authenticated statement - witness testimony
• personal statement
• outcomes from questioning
• Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) - evidence from the past

11. Assessment Requirements
The evidence provided by you will be assessed by your
Lecturer. Evidence must meet the following criteria:
Valid - relate to the SVQ standard of the award you are
undertaking
Authentic - was produced by you
Consistent - achieved on more than one occasion,
Current -not more than two years old,
Sufficient - covers all the performance and knowledge
requirements
12. Formats of Evidence
Evidence may be collected through a range of formats
such as:
• personal statement
• testimonies from colleagues/ supervisors
• projects
• audio tapes
• photographs
• videos
13. Your role
As a candidate you are required to gather the evidence
from the work place to show you can perform to
National Occupational Standards within your SVQ.
This evidence should be forwarded to your Assessor.
Feedback will be given as to whether this evidence
meets the stated competencies in you SVQ.
You will also be required to be assessed on site by an
SVQ Assessor.
14. Portfolio
Training will be given in using One-File the E-Portfolio
system the college is using.
