3. PROBIOTICS
• The word “probiotics” was coined by Parker (1974), and defined as “Organisms and
substances that give to intestinal microbial balance”.
• Fuller (1989) revised the definition as “live microbial feed supplement which
beneficially affects host animal by improving its intestinal microbial balance”.
• Probiotics are often termed as “friendly”, “beneficial”, “good” or “helpful” bacteria,
because they help keep the gut healthy.
• “A probiotic organism can be regarded as a live, dead or component of a microbial
cell, which is administered via the feed or to the rearing water, benefiting the host
by improving disease resistance.
4. Lactobacillus - This may be
the most common probiotic.
It's the one you'll find in
yogurt and other fermented
foods. Different strains can
help with diarrhea and may
help people who can't
digest lactose, the sugar in
milk.
Saccharomyces boulardii - is
a yeast found in probiotics.
It appears to help fight
diarrhea and other digestive
problems.

6. PREBIOTICS
• The concept of prebiotics was initially suggested by Glenn Gibson and Marcel
Roberfroid in 1995.
• Prebiotics are special plant fibers that help healthy bacteria grow in your gut.
This makes your digestive system work better.
• Prebiotics are a source of food for your gut’s healthy bacteria. They’re
carbs your body can’t digest. So they go to your lower digestive tract,
where they act like food to help the healthy bacteria grow.
8. BENEFITS OF PREBIOTICS
• Help regulate bowel movements.
• Produce neurotransmitters that go back and forth between
your gut and your brain to trigger mood changes and other
processes.
• Stimulate your body to make hormones that aid in appetite,
appetite suppression and more.
• Help your bones mineralize and absorb calcium and
phosphorus, which can improve bone density.
• Improve how well your immune system functions.
• Enhance your body’s anti-inflammatory response.
• Increase production of good bacteria and decrease bad
bacteria that causes disease.
