The effective leader and manager
2. 2
1. Background
The current environment offers both opportunities and threats which require a strategic and
operational response. Successful organisations will be those that stand out from the crowd
with a differentiated brand, organisation and services.
This one day course is delivered as part of a four day organisational development
programme. The programme helps organisations to manage change through developing
capability, expectations and competencies of managers.
The course was developed for a client that wanted a management course that would help
give their managers more focus. They found that the management courses available often
failed to deliver on the bottom line of: improving individuals, improving the organisation and
growing the organisation. They identified that their managers were already able to manage
delivery but that they were weighed down in the day to day. Their managers were reactive
rather than pro-active.
They asked us to develop a way of evaluating major projects which could then be used by
any individual in the organisation to improve delivery.
2. Course Design
The course starts with an emphasis on individuals and how they can be more effective. We
examine how to free up time and how to be an effective leader. A simple tool is used which
clarifies the essential management processes. This enable delegates to evaluate past
projects and how they could be improved. The same tool is then used to provide a parameter
to help improve future work. With a firm foundation in their own practice, delegates gain an
insight into how they can develop more effective and successful organisations.
“All managers are involved in motion, very few move forwards.”
Pre-reading is provided. Follow-up homework is provided to improve leadership, delegation
and time management.

What people say about the courses
The feedback we have received has been very positive. Delegates have appreciated that the
courses have helped them to develop their strategies and improve service delivery to ensure
that they are more fundable. It has been helpful that Derek Smith, the trainer has a
background as a trustee, not-for-profit, manager, fundraiser and commissioner.
Mark Reilly Voluntary Norfolk Training Manager
The support has been of great value. We wanted to improve the effectiveness of individual
managers and at the same time build a more effective management team. The changing
and very competitive situation we are working in requires new skills. We needed his support
to give us quick wins and provide a substantial return on our expenditure. Derek achieved
all of the above. Stuart Nevill Chief Executive SPEAR
