Numeric, controlled vocabulary, and publication type filters can help narrow search results to documents containing numeric values, specific subject areas, or publication formats like journal articles or conference proceedings. Date filters should also be used cautiously to avoid missing relevant recent but non-peer reviewed information, such as in conference proceedings.
2. • Find documents that reference
numeric values or ranges by using
a numeric filter (some search
engines auto-convert units of
measure)
• Select documents in certain
subject areas using a controlled
vocabulary filter (or Classif. Code)
• Select type of publication:
journal, conference proceedings,
etc. (some search engines have
peer review filter as well)
• Focus search on publications only
by certain authors or labs
• Filter out less current works by
using the year filter
z Use filters wisely so
you don’t miss relevant
info. For example, use
care when filtering by
document type:
conference proceedings
carry some very up-to-
date and relevant
information even
though they are often
not peer reviewed.
