17. 20 Second “Dropbox”
• Assignment activity
– One file
– 100 point grade (simple, direct)
– No date/time restrictions
– No completion conditions
– Etc
• Just name it and save it
19. Sandbox Site
• Best to practice on something other than your
production site
• If no test site is available, use installer package
from Moodle
– https://download.moodle.org/windows/
– Installs Moodle, Apache, MySQL, and PHP on your
computer and lets you run Moodle as though your
computer was a server
• Or Moodle Cloud! https://moodle.com/cloud/
• Or Moonami!
Editor's Notes
A session for “non-sysadmins” by a non-sysadmin. That was the most technical position I could think of – just trying to make the point that everything in this session can be accomplished through the “Site Administration” settings in Moodle – not the server on which it runs.
This one of the things that I like about Moodle – the first point in their mission statement. Number two is “support learners in their learning”, by the way.
We’ll look at:
Streamlining the user experience for the login and front pages.
Customizing the embedded help in Moodle
Simplifying the processes that teachers use to add content
Is this the same as simplifying?
This is streamlining, right? Or just progress?
1962. From left to right: ENIAC board, EDVAC board, ORDVAC board, and BRLESC-I board, showing the trend toward miniaturization.
(I just thought it was a neat picture, with some general connection to the content of the session!)
I think what I really mean is clarification. Removing the unnecessary. Keeping the relevant. etc
I couldn’t find a screenshot of what our Moodle site looked like before we clarified the front page, but this is close. Lots of categories, blocks, etc., and you had to find the login link in the top right corner.
Now, our users go straight to the login page…
Then to a page with the three main options
Dashboard – to go to enrolled courses
Courses and Categories – to find a course and enroll
Help and Resources
An unplanned benefit was that the site worked better in device browsers, too. (if the app is not being used)
Moodle’s embedded help is great, but sometimes you may need to customize it. You can do that by customizing language strings in your site’s language pack
IF I have added the Concept Map to my site, the original annotation for the Quiz module in the Activity Chooser is no longer accurate.
Customized language string for the help text for the Quiz
Just in case you users might not know what “Moodle Docs” are
Moodle’s power and versatility come at the cost of settings (the quiz has over 60, depending on how you count). By setting defaults and communicating those to your users, you can simplify many of their tasks
If all a teacher needs is a place to take up and grade files, they can set that up in about 20 seconds (if the default settings support it)
We will also get rid of the need to click this icon to see the rest of the editing tools!
The changes and customizations discussed in this session probably won’t harm a Moodle site, but it is always better to try things out first on a test site of some sort. If you don’t have a test site available, Moodle Cloud is free and allows you to set up a Moodle site in which you have administrative rights –but I’m not sure how much control you will have over language strings and themes.
You can also download installer packages from Moodle.org that will let you run a Moodle site contained within your computer.
