Modernised Sculpting
In order to find out the most suitable and, by
extension, most appropriate layout for the titles of
both my magazine cover and my two-page article,
I have conducted an experiment using a diverse
range of different fonts or, in some cases,
variations of the same font type. I have also
utilised an equally diverse range of colours to
accompany each variation, having learned from a
previous project not to limit myself to just one
colour.
The fonts used to create each layout are as
follows:
Brush Script Std
Edwardian Script ITC
American Typewriter
Lucida Blackletter
Matura MT Script Capitals
Calibri (Body)
Bodoni 72 Oldstyle
Lucida Sans Typewriter
and
Engravers MT.
Having chosen the fonts, I ultimately set about
choosing a different colour which I felt would be
appropriate to be the style of a particular font,
which are as follows:
Brown (or Rusted Red), Green, Blue, Purple, Grey,
Orange, Rusted Green, Red and Rusted Yellow.
Although it is ideal to have a diverse range of colours when putting
together a style sheet for what to produce, the only ones that I feel
may be suitable for use (depending on the brightness of the picture
that is taken) are the rusted green and/or rusted yellow, both
colours of which I believe appropriately symbolise sculpting, as quite
a number of sculptists have a tendency to use rusted variations of
colours in their work.

5. Content
Content How You Could Get It
Pictures There are at least two options I can use in order to capture the picture or pictures that I seek: 1. To book out a college
camera for a limited number of days and download the pictures on to my computer using their camera leads. Or 2: To use
my own camera from home, which would save considerable college time and resources, and transfer the pictures I have
taken following a similar approach, but with my own lead. Once this is done, I will transfer them onto InDesign to be
integrated with the text where needed.
Text Perhaps the most important thing in creating an article is the text itself. Regardless of how the article ultimately ends up
being structured, I will create a text box as long as possible that will allow the wording to fit over two pages. Should this
approach wind up not working, I will create a new text box for the second page instead, the task of which, along with
several others, I will perform using Adobe InDesign.
Colours Before I begin typing up my final article, I plan to find a colour that I feel will correspond easily with the subject I will be
discussing in my article which, in this case, is none other than sculpting. If this practice does not work, however, I will
instead write the article first and then alter it accordingly when finished. This will be accomplished through the use of
InDesign, Microsoft PowerPoint or Photoshop. Potential colours may include: Rusted orange, rusted green, bronze, gold or
blue, to name but a few examples.
Font As searching for a font will primarily be a software-based task, I plan to search for something on InDesign which I will then
use to write my article with, provided that it is perfect synchronisation with the theme of my magazine. Once I have fully
decided on what I want to use, I will stick to my choice vehemently throughout the article’s creation. Some of these could
potentially take the form of Minion Pro, Baskerville Old Face or Luminari, to name but a few examples.
6. Contingency Planning
Potential Issue Solution
While this is only a worst-case scenario at best, there is a tiny but
prominent possibility that I could potentially forget my password,
locking me out of my account and leaving me unable to complete my
work through any means at all, which could prove detrimental to the
project
I will inform tutor of what’s going on and, depending on their
instructions, I will head to the learning centre on the first floor (second
and third are available if necessary) immediately and talk to one of the
librarians about resetting my password.
The software I plan to use in the creation of my article, namely
InDesign, could potentially break down and freeze as I am in the
middle of writing my article or any other potential stages, such as
when I am on the verge of completing said article.
Should this scenario ever occur, which is considerably unlikely, I will
ensure that any work I have done is saved beforehand for
precautionary reasons, thereby allowing me to carry on with my work
directly after the restart. A backup of the document will also be
created to ensure this.
As I am taking pictures of sculptures around my chosen museum/park
to visit, which would most likely be either Yorkshire Sculpture Park or
The Hepworth Wakefield, the weather could unexpectedly change,
unleashing a tremendous torrent of heavy rain in the process.
As is often common sense, I will take shelter inside the building
straightaway and wait until the downpour eventually subsides. If this
does not occur, however, I will either attempt to take pictures from
inside the building or call time on the picture session instead.
During development of my magazine cover, I will begin searching for
barcodes to incorporate into my Photoshop document. However, as I
will require Google Chrome to perform this task, it is likely I will
initially be unable to access it.
I will be patient and wait for Google Chrome to start up, while
simultaneously working on other aspects of my magazine. If this does
not work, however, I shall take matters into my own hands and log in
to the application using the college’s login system via IMdB.
While I shall do as much as possible to ensure that my work is
completed on time, it is possible that this may potentially cause a
setback, owing to my extremely thorough nature when working on
projects such as this.
To ensure this setback does not get in the way, I will complete as
much work from home as I can. While I cannot work with Photoshop,
due to the software not being installed on my laptop, I will easily be
able to work on PowerPoint as a good portion of work, particularly the
evaluation, is presentation-based.
Although I am extremely careful to ensure that no one element of my
work is lost during development, namely by using my USB stick to save
it, there may eventually come a point where I will not be able to do so,
despite several potential attempts to do so.
In the event that this problem should arise, I shall begin deleting any
documents (or transferring them on to the desktop beforehand)
considered unnecessary in order to free up space. If, after the first
attempt, this does not occur, I will continue going until the problem is
finally resolved.
7. Health and Safety
Potential Issue How will the issue be avoided?
During photography, which will primarily take place outdoors owing
to the choice of museum I have made to visit, there may be a trip-up
hazard on the steps leading back to the building.
To ensure this potential trip-up hazard does not occur, feet must
coordinated carefully, allowing the person affected as well as anyone
accompanying them to move freely without hesitation.
Additionally, while outdoors, there is a possibility (which could be
likely and unlikely in equal measures) of a broken needle being found
lying precariously on the footpath.
Having learnt from similar experiences in the past, particularly during my
volunteer years at St Nick’s Fields, I will report my findings to the staff
without delay instead of attempting to try and pick it up myself.
As I will be working on a computer through the majority of this
project, I may begin to experience feelings of fatigue or agitation,
which could threaten to cloud my judgement on pivotal decisions for
this project.
In the event that these feelings should ever arise, turn away for the
screen for five to ten minutes so you can recover and calm down. The
Oasis centre on the third floor is useable should these techniques prove
unhelpful.
While this scenario is mildly unlikely, it could still potentially happen
as I might inadvertently graze my knee during my photo session,
either by accidentally slipping on the grass or while I’m traversing the
flight of stairs leading to and from the main building. A similar
scenario could also be applied to college, if computer wires are left
unchecked.
Regardless of the extremity of the injury that you have sustained, it is
advisable to allow the staff to determine the full extent of it, which will
then factor into the decision as to apply First Aid or not. If the injury turns
out to be only a small graze at the shin, medical attention may still be
needed but only on a minor scale, with bandages merely to be used to
treat the affected area.
Although college rules clearly state not to bring in any food and
drink into the computer room, save for water, someone might wind
up bringing said items to the work station, inadvertently causing
computer problems in the process.
To avoid these problems occurring during lessons, it is advised that you
keep such items hidden away until either break or lunchtime is
announced. If you have bought water, you are permitted to drink it but
only in small chunks so that moist does not seap into the keyboard.
When seated at your computer station, you may find that, through
fault of your own, your seat has been repositioned. If you choose to
do nothing about it, you may find yourself experiencing back
problems in subsequent lessons.
To rectify this problem, which can often happen if left unchecked, analyse
the problem first and then, based on whatever requirements you have
that you feel are necessary, alter the chair’s height and depth accordingly
in order to match these as faithfully as possible i.e. if the height is small
and you need to face the computer at eye level, use the mechanism
underneath to bring the chair to a decent height.
