• the standard of something as measured against other things of a similar kind; the degree

• Purpose: Create the necessary conditions for IT services to delivered
on time, to the customer specification/expectation, and on budget,
every single time.
• Question: How can I better create a consistent, excellent product for
my customer.

• Triple Constraints
• Time
• Quality or Scope
• Money or Budget

• Requirements
• Goal or objective is clearly defined.
• The definition exists in such a way that the outcome is measurable.
• The goal or objective is reachable given current technology, budget, and
capabilities.
• A system exists to detect items which do not meet the definition, and there is
a process to rework, reject, or otherwise remediate the error.

• History
• Craft work – up to the early 20th Century (and beyond)
• Interchangeable parts.
• Springfield Armory in the 19th Century.

• What standards do you need to document before the deployment can begin?

• Why do we make written standards?
• To clearly be able to communicate the standard across the organization.
• To be able to measure the results based on that standard.
• To insure we’ve met all our requirements.

• How do I make use of these standards?
• Network Configuration Standard
• Templates
• Need different templates for different models.
• Cut and Paste in to a config
• Manual process where you can miss items.
• Configuration Management software to push
• Often provisioning in place.
• PI Configuration Groups
• Provisioning in place.

• What do I get?
• Higher degree of certainty that all syslog data is flowing to your logging hosts
• Higher degree of certainty that trap data is flowing to your Network
Management tools.
• TACACS will work as expected on all your devices.

• Limitations?
• One size fits most.
• There will always be some additional configuration, or unique elements.
• Your quality is only as good as the current revision of your documentation.
• If you’re not continuing to monitor, and remediate, you will fall out of
tolerance.
