L2 Dip Health and Welfare Assignment 2 2014-2015
Task 1: Routine preventative treatment
To complete both parts of this task, you will need research preventative treatment.
a) Describe in your own words how preventative treatment works. Provide one
example.
Preventative treatment prevents diseases
and infectious parasites by giving vaccines
and diagnostics. Vaccines are given before
the animal shows symptoms of the
infection or disease. Treatment is given
through drops, injections and even tablets.
Kennel Cough is one example of the many
diseases preventative treatment can stop. A
nasal spray is used to stop kennel cough.

Task 2: Current animal welfare legislation and effect on daily regimes
To complete this task, you need to complete the box below. The details of the act
must include which animals are covered and which organisation enforces the act.
Table 1: Animal welfare legislation and effect on daily care.
Name of Act + Year Details of Act Effect on daily care
Animal Welfare Act
2006
If the law is broken
offenders would expect
to receive a punishment
of jail time of a year, a
ban of owning any other
animal as well as a fine
up to 20’000. The act is
maintained by a group
called the Royal Society
for the Prevention of
Cruelty to Animals, also
known as the RSPCA.
The act ensures the owner and
keeper are responsible of the
welfare of animals by meeting
the five welfare needs.
 Need for a suitable diet
and water.
 Need for a suitable
environment
 Need for protection
from pain, suffering
and injury
 Need to be able to
express normal
behaviour
 Need to be placed
with, or apart from
other animals.
The Performing Animals
(Regulation) Act
1925
The act ensures that
animals cannot be trained
or perform unless
registered with the council.
The needs and welfare
must be met. Registration
must be renewed every
year to ensure you are
still legible to continue
training with that
specific animal. Trainers
must resister for every
new animal they want to
Since the act, animals must be
kept safe from harm and
suffering during training which
means trainers cannot
physically assault the
animal. You cannot hide the
animal in question if an
inspector comes to view the
animal.

train and have perform
Welfare of Animals in
Transit Order 2006
Since the act, pregnant
animals who are likely to
give birth during the trip
must not be transported.
Animals who have given
birth in the last 48 hours
must not be transported. If
animals have been born
within the last 48 hours,
it cannot be transported.
The law states that animals
must have food and water for
long journeys. Animals must be
cared for while in transit, When
transporting animals, if
possible, choose the
quickest route possible to
the destination to prevent
further stress to the animal
in question.

Task 3: The Five Animal Needs
For this task, you need to choose one section of animals kept in the Animal
Management Centre. The Animal Management Centre houses mammals,
birds, reptiles, fish and amphibians. On a computer, create a Word Document
following the same format as shown below. You must clearly specify your
chosen animal.
In this document, state each of the Five Needs and describe, in detail, how
each is met for the animal section you have chosen. Once you have finished,
print this document out and attach it securely to your assignment brief.
You must electronically save your work, either on your computer or pen drive.
Task 4: Creating a health management plan for a group of animals
This task requires you to choose one (1) animal group from the following:
 Mixed sex group of six Ring-tailed lemurs (Lemur catta)
 Three female rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus)
L2 Dip Health and Welfare Assignment 2 2014-2015
 Five hens (Gallus gallus domesticus)
 Two dogs (Canis familiaris)
Produce a detailed health management plan for the animals you have chosen
over three months. The management plan should be created using a table
format.
This must cover:
 Husbandry requirements and routines
 Five needs
 Exercise
 Health checks
 Preventative treatments
You must complete this task using a computer. Ensure the document includes
your name, tutor name, module and assignment title. Once you have finished,
print this document out and attach it securely to your assignment brief.
You must electronically save your work, either on your computer or pen drive.
