1. Animal Welfare Act 2006
The Animal Welfare Act was formed in 2006
The act ensures that owners and keepers are
responsible for the welfare of animals and the
needs are met.
The law also increases the minimum age children
can keep animals without an adult until the age of
16 and prohibits giving animals as a prize to
unaccompanied children under the age. Anyone
who is cruel to animals or does not provide it’s
welfare needs will be Banned from owning
animals, fined £20’000 and sent to prison
The welfare needs are, Need for a suitable
environment.
Need for a healthy diet
Need to exhibit normal behaviour patterns
Need to be housed with, or apart from other
animals
Need to be protected against
pain, suffering, injury and
disease.
2. The Welfare of Animals in Transit Order 2006
The Welfare Act started in 2006
The animals must not suffer any pain or suffering
while in transit, either in air, sea or ground.
Suitable space must be provided to the animals in
transit and clean from any dirt or disease.
Mammals and birds that are pregnant and are
likely to give birth on the journey, or have given
birth in the last 48 hours, or are newly born and
navels are not yet healed must not be transported.
