Animals live
decent lives
10 AW 10.1 Animals’ diet is planned to avoid malnutrition, hunger and thirst.
In-feed performance enhancers, force-feeding and forced moulting are not
permitted.
AW 10.2 Animals’ health is managed to avoid injury, disease and pain, including as
a minimum:
• Animals are stunned prior to slaughter.
• Wilful mistreatment of animals is not permitted.
• Tail docking for cattle, live-plucking, mulesing, and face-branding are
not performed.
• Health plans are created with veterinarians and revised on an annual
basis, and antibiotics are not used for growth promotion or group
prophylaxis purposes.
• Animals are only transported when they are fit for the intended
journey.
AW 10.3 Environmental conditions provide for animals’ health and expression of
positive natural behaviour, including as a minimum:
• Extreme confinement is not used.
• Animals are provided with meaningful enrichment.
• Animals do not suffer from thermal stress, including during transport.
AW 10.4 Workers have the competence to secure animal health and welfare
including the ability to recognise positive and negative indicators of animal
behaviour.
AW 10.5 All species-specific requirements are met, in line with IKEA organisation
specifications.

Glossary
Thermal stress Set of environmental conditions for animals (temperature,
humidity, air speed, radiation) that create heat stress or cold
stress.
Wilful mistreatment Actively abusive behaviour such as throwing, kicking, dragging,
punching, or beating an animal.
Worker A person performing work full-time or part-time. This includes
piece rate workers, vocational trainees and workers undergoing
a probationary period, as well as sub-contractor workers
working eighteen (18) hours or more per week on-site.
Extreme confinement Systems that cause animals severe physical and behavioural
restriction and limit their possibility to perform basic
movements (e.g. cage/crate systems, continuous tethering or
stocking densities that compromise physical/behavioural needs
of the animal).
Meaningful enrichment Any sort of provision to animals that:
• increases the occurrence of desirable behaviours and
decreases the occurrence of undesirable ones
• is deployed at an early age to minimise fear reactions
• maintains the sustained interest of animals
• or promotes physical activity.
It must be sufficient in quality and quantity to allow the majority
of animals in a given area the opportunity to access it.
Examples include: perches for laying hens, the provision of
water for ducks, grooming brushes for dairy cattle/calves,
pair-housing for calves, rooting material for pigs.
Performance enhancer(s) Substances given to animals used to promote performance,
such as growth promotors, hormones, production enhancers
and subtherapeutic antibiotics.
Prophylaxis Antibiotics treatment given to animals to prevent disease.
Supplier A company or organisation with which an IKEA company has
an agreement and also any sub-contractors to that agreement
that supply products, services, materials or components. For the
purpose of this document, the term supplier applies to suppliers,
service providers and other contracting parties.
