3. 1. DEFINE ULTRAVIOLET RADIATION
Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is a form of non-
ionizing radiation that is emitted by the sun
and artificial sources, such as tanning beds.
The beneficial effects of UV radiation
include the production of vital nutrient,
vitamin D; however overexposure may
present risk.
4. 2. DESCRIBE WHERE
ULTRAVIOLET
RADIATION IS
FOUND ON THE
EMS COMPARED TO
THE OTHER SIX
FORMS OF
RADIATION.
Ultraviolet radiation lies
between visible light and
x-rays along the
electromagnetic
spectrum. UV “light”
spans a range of
wavelengths between
about 10 and 400
nanometers, while the
wavelength of violet light
is around 400
nanometers or (4,000 Å).
5. 3. ARE THERE HUMAN HEALTH RISKS
FROM EXPOSURE (OR OVEREXPOSURE)
TO ULTRAVIOLET RADIATION?
YES! There are health risks associated with
exposure or overexposure to ultraviolet (UV)
radiation.
6. • DESCRIBE THE MAIN RISK(S)
•Sunburn •Skin Cancer •Eye Damage
7. • Sunburn – UVB radiation is primarily responsible for sunburn, which is
characterized by red, painful, and inflamed skin. Severe sunburn can
cause blistering, peeling, and increase of the risk of skin cancer.
• Skin Cancer – prolonged exposure to UV radiation, especially UVA and
UVB, increases the risk of developing skin cancer. This includes both
non-melanoma skin cancers and melanoma, which is the most
dangerous skin cancers.
• Eye Damage – UV radiation can also harm the eyes. Overexposure to
UV radiation increases the risk of cataracts, a clouding of the eye’s
lens that can impair vision. It can also cause photo keratitis, a painful
condition similar to sunburn of the cornea.
•DESCRIBE COMMON SOURCES OF
EXPOSURE OR OVEREXPOSURE
8. • TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM
THE HARMFUL EFFECTS OF UV
RADIATION:
• Use Sunscreen
• Wear Protective
Clothing
• Seek Shade
• Avoid Tanning Beds
9. 4. DESCRIBE HOW
ULTRAVIOLET RADIATION IS
USED IN TANNING BED
TECHNOLOGY
Tanning beds, also known as
sunbeds or indoor tanning devices,
use ultraviolet (UV) radiation to
simulate sunlight on the skin. The
technology behind tanning beds
involves the controlled emission of
UV radiation to induce a tan.
