B) Evaluate Your Pot
My clay pots main theme is identity. I have tried to interpret this idea by
using words and images that I feel represent me and my
thoughts/feelings.
I had to make a pot from scratch and this is how I did it. Firstly, I created a
detailed plan of what I wanted it to look like, what designs I am going to
put on my pot and the intended shape. This makes the creating process
so much easier. The next step is to gather your newspaper/magazines
cuttings and drawings that you are going to stick on the pot. Once these
two steps have been completed, you can begin the creating process!
METHOD
1) You need to gather the equipment needed such as: clay, clay-cutter,
water to keep the clay moist and newspaper to protect the table.
2) Now take a chunk of clay from the block and knead it to get all of the
air bubbles out of it so that when put into the kiln, it won’t crack.
3) You should now roll it into a ball. Then you flatten the ball so it is about
1cm thick. This is going to be your base for the pot. (Make sure your base is
strong and the right thickness as it will be holding up the whole pot.)
4) You then take another chunk and again, knead out all of the air
bubbles. Then you roll bits of it into coils to create the pots structure.
5) Wrap the coils around the edge of your base. Continue to build it up,
putting bits on after each other. Your pot will start to come together and
take shape.
6) Now you use your water to smooth into a clear surface so your clay pot
can form.
7) Once you have a smooth structure to your pot, you can start adding
little bits and pieces to it if desired like handles etc. using the same coiling
process.
8) It now should be left to dry for at least a week in order for it to be bone-
dry.
9) After it has been dried it is ready to be put in the kiln and make sure it is
done by somebody trained.

10) It is now time to put your pictures on to your pot and do this until it is
completely covered. Then leave to dry and you should be ready for the
final product.
I feel as if I have met the standard that I intended to meet with my clay
pot as I think it really resembles and is a reflection of my identity and
personality. I think that it does tell the story that I wanted it to. However I
do think that I could have covered it a bit more maybe with some
overlapping and more images so that not one part of it was blank. I think
in some ways it does compare with Grayson Perry because some of his
work is a representation of his life and mine is the same. His work is what
inspired me to create this style pot.
