In the last 10–11 years several shootings have taken place, starting the 2nd of February 1996, in Moses Lake, Washington. Barry Loukatis opened
fire in his algebra class, killing 2 students and a teacher. There was another shooting in the same month, February 19, 1996. This shooting took
place in Bethel, Alaska, killing the principal and a student. There were three more shooting in 1997, including the shooting in Pearl Mississippi on
October 1, where two students were killed and seven were wounded, by a 16 year old boy In 1998 there were five school shootings, the Jonesboro
shooting would be the one of these five occurrences. Four students and one teacher were killed and there were ten others wounded. As for 1999, there
have been three shootings, but the year isn't over who says there won't be more. The biggest of these shootings was the Columbine shooting, which
took place April 20th, 1999, where 14 students and one teacher were killed and 23 others were injured. It's sad to say that these are not all the
shootings that occurred, there were many others that took place. This would tell anyone that there is a major problem with violence in schools today.

Parents send their kids off to school everyday hoping that their children will make it home. The school system today is not what it was like fifty
years ago, teachers would disaplin students for talking too much or chewing gum, but today teachers have to wonder if they are going to get shot for
giving a kid a bad grade. Now that might be a little exaerated but the safety of everyone in a school is not as comforting as it once was. The trend of
school violence began a few years ago and then rapidly increased in almost in a copycat pattern. Kids that were made fun of or were loners, saw others
like them acting out in redemption for the bullying that they had endured. That began the violent out burst of school violence and shootings.

With out a doubt these are figures that would scare any student, teacher, parent, or principal, which led to this quote; "No matter where you are, parents
want their students to be safe and secure... that might even precede a quality education... With drugs, gangs, and guns on the rise in many communities
the threat of violence weighs heavily on most principals' minds these days...Anyone who thinks they are not vulnerable is really naГЇve."

The truth is a lot of things that need to be done to make schools safer, many schools have already began precautions. School Security is one of the
most important aspects of prevention. The most common school security measure is the monitoring of students when they move through the hallways
and in places where they congregate, such as restrooms and the cafeteria. School staff members have been served as monitors, but increasingly
schools are hiring security guards to patrol the building and to provide security at events. Some even have police officers inside and outside of the
building to ensure safety, I have since this at my old high school. Probation officers with on– site offices can provide help to students who have already
engaged in illegal behavior.

Although bullying has always been a problem in schools, it has more recently become a bigger crisis with vicious consequences. "However it is
defined, bullying is not just child's play, but a terrifying experience many schoolchildren face everyday. It can be as direct as teasing, hitting or
threatening, or as indirect as exclusions, rumors or manipulation" (Garrett 2). Most kids do not think certain actions are classified as bullying, yet they

(Grapes 60). They are susceptible to all of this violence because it is so ubiquitous in today's society that it becomes almost impossible to avoid.
Another cause that may actually be lesser known is the use of psychiatric drugs. Many people may think that student use of illegal drugs such as
cocaine and heroin may have an effect, yet it seems that psychotropic drugs, such as Ritalin, Prozac, and Luvox prescribed for "mental illnesses," have
been known to cause violent behavior. The most common of these "illnesses" is attention–deficit/hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, which is most often
treated with Ritalin. However, mania, insomnia, and hallucinations are just a few of the side effects that can be produced by such stimulants.
Antidepressants such as Prozac and Luvox are also known to have adverse effects that include irritability, aggression, and hostility. Therefore, it is
possible that there is a link between the increase in school violence and the rise in the prescribing of psychotropic drugs for kids. Unfortunately,
"Despite the known negative effects that prescription psychiatric drugs can have on children...they continue to be prescribed at an alarmingly high rate"
