Simple past
Functions of the "simple past"
The "simple past" is used to talk about an action that ended at a time
before the current one. The duration is not relevant. The time the
action is in can be the recent past or the distant past.
It is a verb tense that is used to identify actions that took place in the
past.
We find two types of simple past: regular or irregular. To form the
simple past of regular verbs we have to add the suffix 'ed' to the
infinitive. No rule is followed to form the simple past tense of
irregular verbs.
Characteristics of the simple past:
-Indicates the action performed at a specific moment in the past.
-The main verb of the sentence is always in the past tense.
–It has a simple composition of "subject and predicate verb"
The simple past is used to talk about a specific action that started
and ended in the past, which is usually equivalent to the indefinite
past tense in Spain. We use it with adverbs of time like "last year",
"yesterday", "last night"
Formation of the "simple past" with regular verbs

The affirmative form of "simple past" is simple.
• I was in Japan last year
• She had a headache yesterday.
• We did our homework last night.
Negative and interrogative
For the negative and interrogative forms of the "simple past" of the
verb "do" as an ordinary verb, "do" is used as an auxiliary, e.g. We
didn't do our homework last night.
The negative form of the verb "have" in "simple past" is usually
built using the auxiliary "do", although sometimes only the not or
the contraction "n't" is added.
The interrogative form of the verb "have" in "simple past" usually
uses the auxiliary "do".
