2. Conventions
Our film trailer, “6 STEPS” had use of conventional features. This includes all technical areas.
We had use of conventional camerawork in different ranges, varying from mid-shots, to panning,
to over the shoulder shot and use of rule of thirds composition.
These conventions also applied to the use of editing. We had applied use of fade in and out
transitions, to slow motion. We also applied use of high-key lighting to suit the genre of our
romantic comedic film, we also applied use of key lighting during the kiss sequence to insinuate
and generate the romantic feeling, in order to attract the segment of the market we target.
For the use of our sound we had conventionally applied use of non-diegetic background music,
ambient sound, dialogue and voice over. The use of background music was “Closer – Tegan and
Sara” the genre of this song was indie-pop, which was conventional for our film type, and would
appeal, attract, interest and bring desire to our targeted demographic audience.
With mise-en scene we had used this conventionally. For each individual character we had use of
trendy costumes that appeal to the our targeted audience with the demographics of 16-19 year
olds. We had carefully thought of the use of makeup, for the male characters we had very
minimalistic makeup, whereas in contrast to the female roles she had more we did this to create a
stereotypical portrayal of the characters as a reflection of our target audience in order to appeal
to them. Our locations varied from streets, parks, homes, and in a school, this again reflects our
targeted audience and created a realism for our narration.
3. Representation
Luke
Main
character
Stereotypically masculine – our use of casting was
conventional we had casted him for this role
because he was good looking and young which fit
into the demographics of our targeted audience.
Masculine.
Romantic
Rebellious
Careless
Social
Chris
Side kick
Intelligent
Quirky
Funny
We had casted him for this role
because he met the stereotypes of
the wingman / sidekick. He was
shorter than Luke the main character
which was also stereotypical.
Eve
Sweet
Intelligent
Beautiful
Rebellious
We casted the right role the female
main character as she is good looking
and young which relates to the
psychographics and demographics of
our audience.
4. AGAINST OUR PRODUCTION PLANNING
In comparison to our final film trailer, some areas we originally planned to
undertake in our production planning was not implemented.
For instance, we had planned to use a tracking shot during a dialogue
sequence of the trailer however this did not make it to the final cut because
we felt that it had appeared unprofessional and that it was not clear to the
audience what the dialogue was in addition to the fact that it was difficult for
them to see who the characters were which would affect their understanding
of the trailer.
Instead we used a shot reversed shot which clearly showed who the
characters were and generated a very calm feeling to the audience which fits
into the romantic genre, additionally did not affect their understanding.
We also had a problem with our on screen timing in terms of takes of the
characters dialogues and the on screen writing because we did not
accurately measure the timing, from this we can benchmark from the error
and implement improvements to our production work.
5. STRENGTHS
• A strength of our film trailer was that we had correctly implemented use of
camerawork from all camera types varying from shot, angle, composition and
movement. In addition the use of mise-en scene, sound and editing was effective
in appealing our audience and relating to their psychographic and demographics.
• We had expressed our message of the film successfully which was based upon
young romance.
• We had created an effective film trailer that captured the attention of our
audience, then their interest, desire and encouraged them to take action i.e. go
to the cinemas which distribute the film.
• We communicated to our audience correctly. This means that we had the name
of the film trailer included, we had the correct message of the film narrative
expressed, we incorporated release dates etc. in order to inform our audience.
6. WEAKNESSES
• A weakness was the we didn’t not explore more complex use of
camerawork we creatively used simple ones, whereas from this we
could benchmark the ineffective use of technical areas applied and
improve upon it in the real piece.
• Timing was a weakness with our film trailer. By this I mean that we
did not measure the time available for takes and for the on screen
writing itself. This created a set back because we realised we had to
minimise the script which potentially affects the level of effectiveness
the film trailer has on creating interest for our audience.
• Some of the transitions
