3. Word Expert Cards
These cards are a way for children to be an expert of a word and teach it to their classmates.
Their peers can guess their word based on their clue and their illustration.
The card is folded over and the front cover
Is an illustration of the word. Inside is a clue
and the “secret word”
Text says, “It blends in. It is hard to
see.”
“Is sleeping during morning and
awake at night.”
Adapted from Richek, pg 415
4. I created these charts to use with portions of Rainforest.
Notice all of these charts and words are discussed in the context of a book. They
may be created before/during or after the reading, but always in a meaningful
context.
This chart is a List Group Label
organizer. The children work with
the teacher to list important
concepts/words and then together
sort and organize the words into
meaningful categories.
A concept of definition map
helps children define a word by
providing examples, synonyms
and their own definition.
A word splash is a
great way to
introduce words to
children before
reading. They can
predict the
meaning and then
check their
definitions based
on what they have
read.
5. Possible sentences is another great tool to
help children with word meanings.
STEP 1: Teacher provides a list of 7 or 8
words that will be encountered during a
reading. .
STEP 2: The children (in groups or whole
class) use what they know about the word
and create sentences with the words. Each
sentence should include at least two words.
STEP 3: Read the text. As you get to a
focus words, stop and check the sentences
that were written in STEP 2. At this time,
make any changes necessary.
This sample was created by first graders. You will notice that prehensile was an
unknown word so it was skipped. The children worked with the teacher to create a
correct sentence for the word after hearing it used in Rainforest. This is seen in STEP
3.
6. More vocabulary ideas
These charts help students make connections with words being
studied and incorporate illustrations to help the student recall the
meaning of the word.
Frey and Fisher, pg 93
Spencer and Guillaume,pg 121
7. Making books is a great way to teach
vocabulary and fun too! The flip book works
well. Vocabulary words can be listed on the
front flaps and definitions and illustrations
can go inside. Children could make a flap
book of rainforest terms while studying the
rainforest.
Spencer and Guillaume, pg 147

Definition by analysis:
This chart can be used to model for
children how words can be analyzed or
broken apart to understand their meaning.
9. This concept of definition map was illustrated previously in slide 3.
(Spencer and Guillaume, pg 10).
10. Vocabulary Self Awareness Chart
Word + / - Example Definition
This chart was discussed in the PowerPoint. It is a great way to assess
what children know about words before beginning a unit of study.
