VA Standard of Learning
LEP 4.5 The student will use meaning clues and language structure
to read words
a. Demonstrate knowledge of prefixes and suffixes
IEP Objective (if available) or
Relatedobjective
Given a set of 4 prefixes struct, mand, dent and cede students will create 8 words
and define their meaning with 100% accuracy.
LessonPlan Objective
Given the definition of suffix students will use strategies to create
new words and determine the meaning of new vocabulary with
100% accuracy.
Universal Design/
Adaptations for
Diverse Learners
Students will be completing a series of activities that differentiate
learning to help meet all needs of students learning styles.

Advanced
Organizer/Introduction
Agenda:
1. Journal (10 minutes)
2. Introduction to Suffixes
3. Part of job worksheet/grammar activity
4. Partner work
5. Independent practice
6. classwork
Describe and Model:
1. Journal (10 minutes). Go over journal and students will put
them away.
2. We will review the concept of a root. We discuss what a root
word is and refer back to when we did prefixes how we
paired the prefix with a root word to create a new word. Now
we will be pairing a root word and a suffix, which are letters
that come after the root word and change it’s meaning. For
example: “big”, “bigger”, and “biggest” mean different
things. Explain that suffixes can change the part of speech of
the root word. For example: “teach” is a verb where
“teacher” is a noun. “React” is a verb, where “reaction” is a
noun.
3. Have the suffixes struct, mand, dent and cede on the
projector screen along with their meaning. Students will
record these on their suffix chart in their unit folder. We will
be focusing on these 4 suffixes throughout the next two
lessons.
4. Students will be assignedpartners to work together on an
activity to place the correct suffixes on the end of root words
already given.
5. We will go over the Grammar suffixes activity and circle the
suffixes activities together as a class using the Smart board.
6. Once we have discussed both activities and all questions have
been answered students will be given the word smash activity
to complete on with the 4 suffixes they learned today.
Supervised Guided
Practice
Students will work together in partners to place the correct suffix at
the end of root words already given, I will be walking around
assisting those that might be struggling or in need of assistance. As a
class we will complete the Grammar: Suffixes worksheet together.
Reiterating how adding a suffix to a root word changes the meaning
of a word. Students will complete circle suffixes worksheet with
their assigned partner we will discuss and go over it as a class.
Students will be askedto come up to the smart board to circle the
answers on the activity that they had and we will discuss.
Supervised Independent
Practice
Students will complete the word smash activity. They must find all
20 words in order to show mastery of the objective and write 8
sentences using those words with their correct meaning.
LessonClosing
Students will turn in word smash activity and resume working on
assignments that need to be completed for other assignments.
Formative Evaluation
Students must create at least 20 words with the root word already
given by adding a prefix. Then they must write 8 sentences using the
words they created by using them in the correct context to show the
meaning of that word in order to show mastery of the lesson
objective.
