Update: Harvest Festival
Hopefully you had the chance to stop by the North Manchester Harvest Festival! It was a beautiful Saturday with plenty of fun activities/booths for children and adults alike. An impressive amount of food was present at the event as well. Oh so satisfying! To the right, there is a picture of the kids who won the chalk drawing contests. Thank you to the North Manchester Chamber of Commerce and the Harvest Festival committee for facilitating such a great fest.
Update: Manchester University's Homecoming
Manchester celebrated its 125th birthday at this year's homecoming. During the weekend, there was plenty of reminiscing and also many memories created. The encore lectures were an alumni favorite! Alums joined a Manchester University faculty or staff member to discuss a certain topic. The Chamber's intern, Chloe Webber, participated in Dr. John Planer's "Manchester Today: An Open Discussion with Current Students." Of many things Chloe learned from this session, she discovered how there were mattress/bed races right outside of the hall she lived in for two years. She would like to see that tradition come back to life. Then, on an athletic note, the MU football team had a win versus Defiance. Go MU!
2. Welcome the Chamber’s Newest Member
Amanda Sloan, owner of New Leaf Day Spa, is now a member of the North Manchester Chamber. New Leaf Day Spa is located at 221 East Main Street in North Manchester. She likes to pride her business on the fact that she puts the people first! She wants everyone to know that she focuses on sanitation to avoid hurting her clients. She mentioned in her interview that people that are sensitive to aspirin cannot have chemical peels. People that are sensitive to bees should not have waxes. Lastly, people diagnosed with cancer cannot have massages. Amanda wants to keep everyone safe, and we can definitely appreciate this! She has several services available including express customized facials, customized PCA peels, oxygenating trio (for acne), bikini wax, eyebrow/upper lip combo, CND Shellac & Vinylux manicures, upper body massages, and express Vinylux pedicures. All of these services happen to be on special during November. Starting after Black Friday, there will be a package available called “Santa’s Nice List,” that will include a 30 minute upper body massage, customized express facial, and a Shellac manicure for $70. This will be available until December 23rd and is available for gift certificate purchase. You don’t need an appointment (although suggested) so make sure you stop into New Leaf Day Spa and see what Amanda can do for YOU!

3. Happy Turkey Day!
Thanksgiving is on Thursday, November 27th this year. Most celebrate the holiday with
family and friends while watching the Macy’s Parade and preparing for major shopping
days: Black Friday and Cyber Monday. But we
shouldn’t forget that we are celebrating to
recognize the original 1621 pilgrim’s harvest
meal. Interestingly enough, the tradition didn’t
begin until 1863 when President Abraham
Lincoln proclaimed Thanksgiving to be a national
holiday. A unique fact about the Pilgrims’ menu
is that it included lobster, seal, swans, pumpkin (not pie), and shellfish. Now we enjoy
turkey, stuffing, corn, sweet potatoes/yams, cranberry sauce, and assorted pies. Most
say that they are forever thankful for the switch!

4. David McFadden Named 15th President of Manchester University
Big congratulations to David McFadden ‘82! His Presidential Inauguration ceremony will take place on Friday, November 7th, 2014. President Dave, as he likes to be addressed, will have a lovely ceremony in Cordier Auditorium at Manchester University. There will also be a reception after the ceremony at the Jo Young Switzer Center. David McFadden wrote an e-mail to the students indicating that “[he is] personally looking forward to the inauguration because, when it’s over, those banners with [his] picture on them will come down and [the students and Dave] can get back to the real world where [students] all are the focus of what we do. ” This is a statement of true dedication to anyone and everyone associated with Manchester.
