The flags waved higher as the band began to play.
On May 25, Massapequans gathered for the annual
Memorial Day parade to honor those veterans who
died for their country.
“We come here every year,” said Bill Pesek, a Vietnam
veteran. “We have pride in our veterans and support in
the Town.”
The parade began on Front Street in Massapequa
Park and traveled south on Broadway to Klestinec
Park where a Memorial Service and Wreath Laying
Ceremony were held. The parade was filled with peo-
ple of different age groups.
“It was probably one of the biggest turnouts of
late,” said Massapequa Park Village Mayor Jeff Pra-
vato, who was joined by other Village, Town and
County officials at the parade.
There were also other veterans who expressed their
thoughts about the importance of knowing the his-
tory behind the meaning of Memorial Day.
“The parade makes you feel proud to be an Ameri-
can,” said Vincent Marino, a Korean War veteran.
“Our children and future generations need to learn
more about the history of Memorial Day and know
it’s not only a day to be off from school.”
The parade gave many people a sense of together-
ness and residents were happy with the turnout of the
parade, they said.
“It’s a nice feeling to have the community come

together to support service men and the veterans,” said Nick Lamitola, a Massapequa
resident since 1967. “It’s nice to see the children be there for us as we have been there for
them.”
Many residents also shared their thoughts on what Memorial Day meant for them.
“Memorial Day means honoring all those soldiers who have died to serve our country
and honoring those serving now,” said Maureen Manley, a Massapequa Park resident.
“This parade gives a good sense of community and it’s nice to see young families with
their children supporting this event.”
Elizabeth Abbinanti, a Massapequa Park resident of 42 years, said: “We never miss the
parade,” said Abbinanti. “We have been coming ever since my children were little and

now I get to share this with my grandson. Hopefully, we can
have this parade years from now to educate future genera-
tions.”
In addition, Vincent Marcantonio, a Nassau County aux-
iliary police officer, pointed to the importance of the pa-
rade. “My dad was a Korean War veteran,” said Marcanto-
nio. “Thank God for those men and women who fought for
the United States, if it weren’t for them we wouldn’t have
freedom. Every year we volunteer at this parade to support
them.”
“It was nice to see all the residents come out and show
their support of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for
our country,” said Pravato. “And to show support for all of
our veterans and military personnel.”
