Greece had lots of
mountains and it
sorely lacked
farming land, so it
decided to become a
naval power.

and lots of little islands. It was
composed of several city-states, the
main of which was Athens.
Because of its mountain ranges and
powerful fleet, Greece had little to
fear from its enemies.

Persian invaders in the city of Marathon.
A Greek soldier ran the 42,195 meters
between Marathon and Athens to report the
unexpected victory. Right after giving his
message, he died of exhaustion.
In his honor, many cities in the world
organize a race called Marathon, with the
same exact distance.

Zeus Poseidon Hades
These are the main Gods in the Greek pantheon. Zeus
controls lightning; Poseidon is master of the ocean;
Hades rules in Greek hell. They are brothers.

Hermes is the messenger of the gods;
Hephaestus is a master smith and he crafts
Zeus’ bolts; Athena is the goddess of
wisdom; Aphrodite is the goddess of love
and beauty.
