1. Task One Short Film Evaluation
During filming my role within the group was mainly directing with help from
Courtney in which shoot we would tackle first. Also I was the main camera
operator and worked on which angles and positions the camera would work best
in to capture the shot. By communicating well within the group we were able to
gather the correct footage that we needed to create the short film.
Using the cameras were very easy and by using a tripod to make sure that the
angles of the camera were straight when needed but also was easier to hold the
camera still when moving in shots. Using Final Cut Pro X editing software for the
first time was difficult to understand however when I was able to work it out and
with some help from Sally in editing cuts and adding sound.
When editing the film, we were given a list of shots that needed to appear in the
film final cut.
Continuity editing – this type of editing tool I used in the beginning of the film
when Chantelle was walking into college from the c ar park. This shot was created
which a number of different shots to follow her movement in the scene. This
scene could have gone better if I was able to plan out the movements in more
detail and worked on evening out so the camera was in the same position in each
shot.
Match on action – This edit is when the camera cuts between two shots to show a
strong continuity of action within the scene, for this I used Chantelle walking into
college by cutting between her opening the door and her entering the college.
This scene could have gone better if the speed of her walking into the building
was the same as her opening the door.
2. Shot Reverse Shot – This type of cut can be used to cut between two people
speaking dialog so the audience can see the emotion and reaction on the
characters face. This shot could have gone better if we had worked more closely
on the script so that the lines weren’t changed.
180-degree rule – This rule works with the camera not crossing a line when
filming (as above) and the camera never leaving that side of the line unless a
move is made. This rule was shown during the dialog part of the film, it might
have worked better if the camera was placed the same angle on each other
characters instead of being off slightly.
Thanks to this film I know that I still need to edit and work on improving my
camera skills in filming such as creating better angles and working how to work in
different editing skills into the final cut. Working both these fields will hopeful
help me to create a smoother film.
