2. Definition
Alkanes are chemical
compounds containing only
single bonds
These single bonds move
freely.
Alkanes are saturated with
hydrogen.
The molecular shape of
alkanes are tetrahedral.
Bond angles are close to
109 degrees.
3. Alkanes Photos
Pentane
The black balls represent carbon and the white
represent hydrogen. Because there are four carbon
in the parent chain, it is called butane.
3-Ethel Pentane
In this strain, the parent chain has five
carbons, making it pentane. However, there
is a chain of two carbon going off of the third
carbon on the parent chain, making it 3-Ethel
Pentane.
4. Alkanes Photos
1-Methyl Butane
This is a parent chain of four carbon making it butane. There is a
chain of one carbon coming off of the first carbon, making it 1-Methyl
Butane.
5. Extra Fact
Natural gas contains lighter alkanes (mainly
methane, ethane, propane and butane) and
produces less pollutants compared to
petroleum derived fuels.
6. Conclusion
In conclusion, I have
learned that alkanes are
the most basic organic
compounds, containing
single bonds of carbon and
hydrogen. Understanding
alkanes are the first step
in learning more complex
multi-bonded compounds!
