Video Resume & Job Search Assignment
Have you ever thought about doing a video resume? It’s not as difficult as you may think, and
this is your opportunity to learn.
For your communication to be effective, it’s best to have a job and/or organization in mind to
highlight your most relevant skills and experience. Using course learnings so far:
1. Research your “dream job” (note: it must be realistic for your qualifications), the
organization, and who may be the best person to address your cover/video resume to
(“Job contact person”). Or, if you don’t find a “dream job” but have a “dream
organization” in mind, you can also pick them, and find the best contact person to pitch
your ideas to. Create your own opportunities.
2. Use this video from career expert Madeline Mann and free video editing software Invideo
to create a two-minute video resume (you’re welcome to use a different tool; e.g.
Canva if preferred)
3. Draft a mock-up LinkedIn post (no more than 50 words) that goes with your video
resume, and you may post close to your graduation to let your network know about the
fact you’re open to work, what experience/skills you have, and any areas you may be
interested in/can contribute to (TIP: Try to highlight your experience and make your post
less generic / not too promotional)
4. Review the video resume of a classmate (ideally, someone who doesn’t have any
comments yet) and leave a kind and constructive comment. Highlight what they did well,
and any areas of improvement (something other that “Great video resume”).
5. Write a cover letter (no more than one page). Assume you will send this cover letter
as an email attachment to the contact person.
6. Write a short business email to the job contact person referencing your cover letter
and video resume as attachments.

o Video Resume & LinkedIn post: Share as a new discussion to the forum
o Comment on a classmate’s discussion
• COVER LETTER & BUSINESS E-MAIL
o Include the job posting and/or organization, job contact person/their LinkedIn
profile, your cover letter AND business e-mail in a Word document which
includes your course/name (one page maximum; use headers please and no
titlepage)

TIPS/NOTES
Your writing must use business writing best practices discussed in class (correctly, concisely,
and clearly; consider style and format etc.) and be free of grammar / spelling mistakes. Think
about your audience/purpose and adjust your language / tone accordingly. It is recommended
that you edit your work with a fresh pair of eyes at least one day after you write it.
