4. This Learning Package (LP) is designed
to provide you a better understanding of
the concepts on Photosynthesis. Upon
finishing this you are expected to:
*describe photosynthesis operationally;
*determine the factors that is important
to the food making process;
*identify the structures of the leaf
involved in the food making
process;
*differentiate the light-dependent
reaction from light-independent
reaction of the food making
process; and
*appreciate the importance of plants in
sustaining life on earth.
Now that you know what you’ll be
learning, let’s refresh our minds about
those topics.
Hello there! I’m
Mrs. Sunny.
Here are the
things that you
need to know
from this SIM.

5. GUIDE CARD: “Light up my World”
Hi I’m Mr. Leafy! Life on earth is
what makes it distinct among all the planets
in the solar system In sustaining life, all
organisms require energy, however not all of
them can use light energy directly for life
activities. To provide the energy needed by
all organisms, plants, (like me) and other
chlorophyll-bearing organisms capture the
energy of sunlight and convert it into
chemical energy stored in the food.
This concept about photosynthesis
can help you understand more how life was
able to exist on earth. Thus, you are
encouraged to accomplish the entire task
included in this learning package. The
activities included are focused on the basic
information and skills about photosynthesis.
Every activity that you are going to do is
made interesting and you will have fun doing
it… Want to have an idea of what is in store
for you?
Here are some clues… 4
6. Activity 1: “ In and
Out of the Green”
The goal of this activity is for you to define the
process of food making. I am sure you’ll like this
activity.
Activity 2: “Green or

1. Carbon Dioxide enters through the stomata, an
opening leaf’s epidermis and cuticle.

sun, making plants look green.
3. Water is absorbed through the roots and carried
through the stem to the rest of the plants.
4. The factors that affect the rate of photosynthesis
are temperature, carbon dioxide, water, and light.

(1) In what layer we
can find most of the
stomata?
Answer:
________________
11. This is a layers of cells sandwiched by the lower and upper epidermis.
This is called mesophyll layer, which is composed of palisade cells (arranged like
columns) and spongy cells (loosely arranged cells). These cells have organelles that
contain green pigments. These organelles are called chloroplasts.

12. 13
(2) What is the only
epidermal cell that can
carry out
photosynthesis?
Answer: ____________
13. This is a stoma, a slit-like structure. Around the stoma is a pair of bean-shaped cells
called guard cells. The guard cell is an epidermal cell with chloroplast. It is the only epidermal
cell that can carry out photosynthesis. It regulates the opening and the closing of the stoma.

15. outer membrane
inner membrane
intermembrane space
This is a chloroplast, it is enclosed by a double membrane – an outer membrane and
an inner membrane. The outer membrane is smooth while the inner membrane is thrown into
tube like structures. Between these membranes is a space called intermembrane compartment.
Next to the inner membrane is a space called stroma. Stroma contains a complex mixture of
enzymes and water. Embedded in the stroma is a complex network of stacked sacs. Each stack
is called a granum (grana). A granum is made up of flattened sacs called thylakoid. The
photosynthetic pigments are found in thylakoids.

28. Through the process of photosynthesis,
plants and other chlorophyll-bearing organisms
produce food for themselves.
In photosynthesis, plants capture light energy
and convert it into chemical energy stored in
food.
The summary equation for photosynthesis is
as follows:
sunlight
Carbon dioxide + water glucose + oxygen
chlorophyll
Photosynthesis occurs in the chloroplast found
in the leaves of plants.
Essentially, the two major stages in
photosynthesis are:
o Light reaction phase
o Calvin Cycle 30
